it was about this girl whose grandmother i think? made sweaters for other little girls with their names on them. For some reason I don't remember, they had to keep the sweaters and the girl had to wear them to school. She told everyone she had a lot of middle names that her grandma put on sweaters. I think it was by Margaret Peterson Haddix, but I might be mistaken.

I agree with Abigail - this *must* be right. I've read the book and the OP's description is spot-on. I'm shelving it and marking it solved, rather than waiting for confirmation as it's so old.
