message 2: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 209 comments I don't think you can even compare them, the only thing they have in common is that they are both YA.
I have to say, that I did love them both, but that Vampire Academy is my favorite!!! like Elena I raced out and bought them the day they came out and finished them the same day.
The characters, story and the writing style were just a winning combination!

Desperado (lethallovely) | 453 comments I agree with Deanne. To compare them is like comparing Blood and Chocolate with Shiver. The only thing they have in common is that they're YA novels involving vampires.

I am not a fan at all of Twilight-& was a huge fan of VA- but I think it's a little harsh to call it "a waste of time". Apparently it's not a waste of time if so many people love it.

All I am saying is that you can voice your love for one series without completely trashing another. Everyone has their own opinions & it does not make another person insane for liking a series/book that you don't. That's just my two cents.

ETA: And may I advise you to use correct grammar, Elena. I know this is the internet & punctuation is a thing of the past. But it really doesn't help your cause at all when you litter your post with uncapped letters, mispelled words & excessive exclamation points. It made me feel like I was reading a post by a overzealous 10-year-old, not an intelligent young woman who shares my love of VA.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) Well said LethalLovely.... You said everything I was thinking :-)

*Mrs. Brightside* Oh, wow...Well I loved VA too! Twilght was okay. I wouldn't re-read the series (except for Breakung Dawn) again. And not trying to change the subject or anything, but which one are you saying is better, LethalLovely: Blood and Chocolate or Shiver?

Thanks, LethalLovely. Elena, it's actually in the group rules that members should try as best they can to use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

message 9: by K (new)

K | 21 comments Hmmm...tough one. I have only found one other series that made me feel the way Twilight made me feel, and that was the Legend of Guardian King series by Karen Hancock, a Christian fantasy series that probably wouldn't interest many in this group. What I loved about Twilight was that it brought me back to first love when I was a teenager, that all consuming, die if it doesn't work out feeling. There is something special about it before you are all jaded. We get to watch (spoiler alert) Bella move through all the same emotions we felt when it failed and then triumph when she finally has her happy ending. It was more than just a typical romance novel, which is all about lust, it was what we imagined before we started dating.

I really liked Vampire Academy, but it just missed the mark on the way it made me feel. It was more action, Rose is more jaded to begin with. But I thought the story line of Vampire Academy just a little bit more interesting and exciting. Twilight was all dialogue, Vampire Academy is all action.

message 10: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 453 comments Thanks, Lisa & TDF Pamela. =)

Mrs. Brightside, I'd have to say that IMO, Blood & Chocolate is the better of the two. I enjoyed both books but B & C was one of my first paranormal YA novels. I think the writing is much better, not to mention that the storyline is somewhat original. You can't walk 2 feet in a bookstore without finding a YA novel about a werewolf boy falling for a human girl these days. But a werewolf girl falling for a human boy? I haven't come across many of those.

I know this is totally off topic but @LethalLovely:
I've never read Blood and Chocolate but I happened to watch the movie this weekend. I did not realize that it was a book! I'm sure the book is alot better than the movie. How many stars did you give it?

message 12: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 453 comments No worries, Jessica! =) I gave B & C 4 stars & I admit, it's partly for nostalgic reasons. I thought this book was amazing as a teen & while I don't think it's quite as epic now, it's still a really good book IMO.

I saw the movie, masochist that I am. I can't speak for everyone else who's read the book, but for me it was complete crap. There were so many inaccuracies, not to mention there were scenes from the book that were left completely left out of the movie. I'm sure I would've liked the movie more if I hadn't have read the book first. But because I did, I couldn't help but shriek in anger at how they turned an awesome book into a crap movie for the masses.

message 13: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (imahoodieninja) | 170 comments Four stars is a good rating to me! I must check it out!
And don't worry, masochism seems to be in me as well lol

message 14: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments yeah- no comparison. Vampire Academy is way better.
A better comparison would be Vampire Academy to House Of Night. Now that's a tough one.

I don't get why everything with teens and vampires have to be compared to Twilight. Different authors, and really, different genres. Twilight was, first and foremost, a love story. A love story that just happened to contain vampires. Vampire Academy was a story about vampires, that just happened to contain a great lovestory.

Exactly what i think about it. Let each be their own, and honestly if it wasn't for Twilight i doubt alot of people would be on a vampire/supernatural kick. i love Twilight in its own way.

message 18: by Angela (new)

Angela (angbens) | 343 comments Vampire Academy is better. I do like Twilight. The Characters are vastly different though, so it is hard to compare them.

*Mrs. Brightside* My bad-off topic again. But I saw the Blood and Chocolate movie, and I didn't like it that much. But you're right about the werewolf girl falling for the human, definitely different!
Irene wrote: "yeah- no comparison. Vampire Academy is way better.

That actually isn't a tough one still. Vampire Academy is better.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Definitely. House of Night was ok for the first couple of books, then went way downhill. VA is still tops!

*Mrs. Brightside* Lol, that was the opposite with me(: it was downhill from the start, and it started getting just a little better after the 3rd book. Now Im..starting to like it..at the 5th book! I was going to give up after the 3rd book(really, after the second) but people kept telling me to read it! So here I am..But VA, PSH! It was grrrrreat from the start!

Richelle Mead is on of my favorite authors, her writting style is addictive, I find her writing very witty.
I have loved everything she has written to date.
I would most recomend Vampire Academy. as Smut Bitch said VA is a story about vampires that contains a love story.....and what great love story it is.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments They're very different series, so not ones I would compare. I'm very much with K on this one in that I was one of those people that was really drawn in by Twilight and loved the way it reminded of me of an all consuming first love. I've reread them several times and still love them. This is a series that had me hooked from the beginning.

I think the VA books are brilliant and I love Rose and Dimitri. While I adore this series, I think it's one that's gotten stronger over time, with Vampire Academy not being as strong of a first book for me. But it's a series that I quickly came to love.

Oh and House of Night doesn't really rate for me as I have a strong loathing of the protagonist. I know plenty of others love it though.

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments Va is awesome! I loved Twilight too. And I agree with the statement above about the feelings it brings out in you. It is not only alove story, it is a story of unconditional love. When she is trying to figure out what he(Edward) is, she decides it doesn't matter because she loves him. VA is so well written. The action and chemistry is outstanding. House of Night lost me. The story became to drawn out for me. A litte too young if that makes sense and too many books. In VA I like that Rose seems so grown up already. She and Lissa were already on their own at the beginning of the first book. Richell Mead is a fantastic writer. I love the Succubus series too. VA has everything in it and I never get tired of it. I have re-read it many times. Some of my favorite scenes are when she fights w/Dimitri during practice guarding moroi, at the cabin when he takes forever to try to explain his feelings and she says she simply loves him, when he is strigoi and she got away from him towards the end and he looks at her and says, You. Are. Amazing. Oh, and when they are on the roof and D tells her he isn't going to be Tasha'a gaurdian. I love the twists, turns, the magic the power, the shadow kissed adn spirit stuff we are just learning about, the intense moments of feelings and the kickbutt action! I liked the Blood and Chocolate book better than the movie. They totally change the story in the movie and she ends up with the human instead of the hot older guy/werwolf.

Silver Thistle (silverthistle) Please don't hate on me, but....

I'm reading VA book 1 at the moment and so far it's a bit...meh. It's ok but I'm just not feeling it. Does it get better? I like the Rose/Dimitri thing that's just starting but Lissa actually bugs me a bit. If it was all Rose and no Lissa I'd like it more.....probably.

Twilight I devoured though. Four books over 4 days although the last one wasn't as good as the others, I thought.

message 26: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 01, 2010 01:06PM) (new)

Stick with it, Sonya. Lissa is in the books less (somewhat) as the story is really about Rose. VA is awesome!

im saying stick wit it b/c i think it is awesome...but try books 2-3. i think those r the best. mainly if u still dont like it by then, then maybe this series isnt for you.

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments Think of the VA books as one big long story. The 1st one is just setting things up. Lissa's character is a little annoying, but she does grow in the series. And I think she will grow a lot in the last book.

Silver Thistle (silverthistle) Thanks ladies :D

I know it's told from Rose's POV but somehow I thought Lissa was the main character....not sure why I would think that though *shrug*

....cheers me up to know that she's not. If it's more Rose and less needy Lissa then there's hope for the rest in the series :P

I'll keep at it and let you know how I get on.
Thanks.

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments I think I remember thinking it was going to all be about Lissa too. I know evryone has different tastes, but I think this is one of the best vampire series out there! I have read Twilight, Blue Bloods, Evernight, House of Night, and Vampire Diaries.
Twilght and VA are my top two favorites. Blue Bloods by Melissa De la Cruz is good too. I do plan on reading Vampire Kisses adn The Morganville Vampires so I don't kow how they compare.

Liss (LissFields) | 16 comments V.A. hands down! I have a special place in my heart for twilight (it did distract me during my 5 hr child labor) but i have always had a problem with Bella depending on men to rescue her. Rose on the other hand is kicking ass and taking names lol shes a strong female character and you cant help but love that.

You need to read the Jeaninie Frost Halfway to the Grave Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost series. CAT AND BONES rock the PNR series IMO. Nothing YA about them though!!!

The only issue I had with the VA series is when Rose decided to break out Lissa uncle and involved her friend in her illegal scheme. It doesn't fit with her character in my mind and after reading the books to that point I truly couldn't see her making that decision. It really bothered me. I also couldn't understand her denial that Dimitri wouldn't want to see her. HELLO... seems pretty clear he would be feeling remorse for his past.

I've just added this to the TBR. Thanks

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments Halfway to the Grave is on my reading list. But some of my favorite adult PNR or UF are Keri Arthur's Riley Jensen Guardian series and Richelle Meads The Georgina Kincaid Succubus series. Full Moon Rising (Riley Jenson Guardian, #1) by Keri Arthur http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
http://www.keriarthur.com/
We all know Richelle from VA, well her adult series are just as well written with great characters.
There are a few other great ones. I am obessed with The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning right now. the last book come out in Jan.

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments http://www.karenmoning.com/ Check out all of the groups on her dedicated to her books. They are very addicting.

Denise (akaurora) | 59 comments I have read both of those series -Arthur's Riley Jensen Guardian series and Richelle Meads The Georgina Kincaid Succubus - Really liked them. I know you will LOVE the Halfway to the Grave series. You should time your read to finish the series when last book comes out (This Side of the Grave 2/22/2010). I can't wait....
I can't wait for the next Fever book too. Lots of cliffhangers waiting to be answered!!!!

Heather Book Savvy Babe (booksavvybabe) | 26 comments sorry, gotta throw in my 2 cents…..I prefer VA. I love the Twilight series, don't get me wrong. But, I did have a few issues with book 4…I am putting VA on top because I love Rose, I love how she is strong, stubborn, but she has also grown a lot through the books. Neither Rose or Dimitri are whiny, and for that matter, neither is Adrian….plus, no one glitters…..

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments I like them both. They are very different from each other even though they both are about vampires. Twilight is like a traditional love story with monsters thrown in. VA is about a kickbutt/strong protagnist trying to find her way in the world who also happens to fall in love.

message 42: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments I wished Rose would have backed off Dimitri when he told her to and gave him some space. Instead, she kind of stalked him.

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments I agree it was a little too much for him, but at the same time I don't like how he handled things. I wish he would have just told her he needed some space. I think he would have come around. But I can see it from Rose's point of view too. She just spent two books trying to help him. First to kill him and then to find a way to change him back and then to change him back. I can see how she would be a little upset.

*Mrs. Brightside* Really? The fourth book in the twilight series was the best to me.

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments I liked thte fourth book, but I thought it had some cheesy parts. And the thing with Jacob and Renesme. I am okay with it, but it was a little weird and didn't quite go with the feel of the other books. i liked how Bella got special gifts! Her whole series felt like real life. Like it could have happened down the street. The last book pushed that a little bit.

*Mrs. Brightside* I didn't like the other books /: the fourth one made me happy with how everything ended.

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments I liked how it ended too.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) The Jacob and Renesmee thing didn't bother me (other than that stupid baby name).

The only thing that bugged me about BD was the fact that there was no real epic battle at the end. The Cullens gathered people from around the world, and the Volturi showed up and nothing happened. No real fights, no main characters died, nada.

At least one Cullen should have died to make that whole ending legit. Not Edward or Bella, but maybe they could have tossed Rosalie out to the elements.

True Love Forever (trueloveforever) | 102 comments HaHa, like it! Yeah, a battle would have been good.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh and VA is much better than both Twilight and HoN, but none of the three are really anything alike. VA is more urban fantasy, Twilight has more of a PNR feel even though it follows a UF formula by keeping the same characters, and HoN is a guilty pleasure that doesn't really fall into any category...the books are very immature, but I can't stop reading them.

After VA, I'd say my next favorite for vampires in YA (I have a completely different list for adult and try not to compare adult and YA in the same category) would be Morganville Vampires. Book 1 is a little weak in that series, but the story as well as the heroine really improves in book 2 and just keeps getting better and better.
