Jammies Thanks, Sarah, and I hope it hasn't skunked!

Have I mentioned that my younger brother is a professional microbrewer? 'cos he is and I'm disgustingly proud of him.

I don't think you have! What's his brewery?

message 104: by Jammies (new)

Jammies He works at a brewpub chain in Texas called Humperdink's and he has won a gold, a silver and a bronze in different years at the Great American Beer Festival. He makes the standard Humperdink's beers, and he's allowed one beer of his own making every season.

Looks a little like Alecia. She lives around there, too.

A New Yorker article about Dogfish Brewery I read awhile back.

message 107: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Good article. Do you have anything to say about it, or is just a talk-amongst-yourselves link?

message 108: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments It is a good article, and it is quite interesting about all the different beers that he produces, some it seems for no other reason than he can.

message 109: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yeah, some of them obviously have no market, or he knows going in that they won't actually taste good. Then some you wouldn't expect to like are likeable.

I thought it was interesting how he produced a significant number that tasted pretty nasty. I don't have any special insights, though.

Sarah | 13814 comments My friend from Asheville couldn't get hold of the Solstice bottles, so she brought me a 12 pack of their local Highland beers instead. The Oatmeal Porter was excellent. I'm a little cross with my sister for taking BOTH of the mocha stouts with her without asking me, since that was the one my friend had said specifically was her favorite. When I went to look for it last night it wasn't in the fridge, and Zu said "Oh, I think your sister took that with her." Grr....

message 112: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I want to try these. Transport me to Asheville, please.

message 113: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Take me with you Larry.

message 114: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Here is the latest that I picked up. They are alright, but czech style didn't seem to make a big difference in the Pilsner.

message 115: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Now you know, but I guess you had to czech it out first.

message 116: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Good one Sarah.

It's a good beer, just nothing about it says I got to get this again.

message 117: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Sarah, sorry your sister took both mocha stouts. Even as adults, our siblings can still make us scream.

I saw Kelpie Seaweed Ale at the store today. Anyone ever tried it?

message 119: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Not I.

message 120: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Nor I.

However, I did have the Shiner Ruby Redbird, which I and my companions loved, but which is apparently very controversial. I thought it was a perfectly refreshing spring/summer beer.

My other new beer of the weekend was heavier: Oliver's Bishop's Breakfast.

My local liquor store has taken to selling single bottles of quite exotic beers. It was awhile since I'd been in there so I guess this is something of a new thing? Or not. I like the idea even though the per unit price is higher, since it's less of a commitment in case you end up hating something.

Why is Shiner Ruby Redbird controversial? Is it distilled from actual redbirds?

message 122: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Shiner traditionalists shun anything different, I bet. It's a Texas thing.

It is brewed with ruby red grapefruit. I guess it's a love it or hate it thing. I thought it was pretty delicious.
I love the single-bottle trend at some liquor stores. I like being able to try something new without the commitment of buying a six pack.

Interesting grapefruit.

message 132: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I thought so. It had the cleanest aftertaste of any beer I've ever had. Gone in an instant.

message 133: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Sarah Pi, have you ever used one of these?

Anyone else?

Bottoms Up

I saw a newspaper article that said one advantage is getting a beer without a head on it.  Isn't the head an integral part of having a beer?

message 134: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Can't watch the video right now - what is it? Some beer should have a head, some shouldn't.

message 135: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments It's a device that fills the glass of beer from the bottom. The cups have a hole in the bottom with a tin ring around it, capped by a magnet. When the cup is pushed onto the device, the magnet is raised and the beer is forced in.

The amount of beer dispensed is determined by a dial on the device; set it once and it will fill each cup to the desired level.

message 136: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Whoa. Weird. I have a few questions.

How fast is it?
Does it come with all the different specialty glasses that different beers taste best in, or just pint glasses?
When we get busy and I have people ordering different beers I can't imagine having time to set machines for different sizes.

message 137: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments How fast? They show a demo of one guy filling cups while two others move them out of the way after he removes them from the device.

He filled 62 in one minute.

I don't know the cost or size of the cups they currently have. I just saw an article in the newspaper & then found the video online.

message 138: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments That's faster than me, fo sho.

I'd still have my question about different types of glasses.

Ale:

Pilsner:

And then there are pints, imperial pints and demi-pints.
Etc.

I don't know if it's a necessary byproduct of the ingredients, or the manufacture, or the pouring, but it's certainly not necessary to the having. No one wants to drink airy foam. Just beer.

Angela~twistedmind~ (twistedmind) | 538 comments when i was tending bar people got fucking irrate if there was much more than a tiny head on their beer.
