Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments On her blog she says, "Right now the tentative plan is for the first Vlad and Leila novel to release in 2012. 2011 will see the releases of the fifth Cat and Bones novel titled This Side of the Grave, Cat and Bones 6 (untitled as of now), and the holiday-themed anthology I’ll be in with Lynsay Sands that will also feature and Cat and Bones story (untitled as of now). My publisher and I are not sure if Vlad’s new stories will be called Night Huntress World, or something else since it’s the start of a new recurring-character series. More data on that once I have it."

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Wow! Honestly, I didn't remember it was that ... hefty. That should tell ya how fast it flows. Be patient with Faythe though, she can be annoying, but does mature throughout the series. :)

message 56: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Yes, be very patient with Faythe. I really like the books, but I just started the 4th one this morning and right off the bat I'm like "God Faythe...you're such a little selfish bitch..." Lol. She grows TOTALLY from the 1st book, but she's a 2 steps forward, 1 step back kinda girl. But I have faith in Faythe. :)

That said, I'm quite enjoying it. I forgot how much I liked this world (and I just love Jenks).

I have that problem too so, for Bingo, I'm trying to only read books on my TBR book shelf case.

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments I have a question. I was looking through the Free Space qualifications and I decided to look at option 3. I read a book on the 'read' shelf on 10-19/20 (last week).

Can I write a review of it and use it as my Free Space selection even if I didn't claim it first?

message 76: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Your free space read can come from any shelf on SOS' bookcase. It must have been started/read by you after the game officially started on 10/11. If so, you're good and can use that book. :)

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments Free Space selection; Option 3 (first-in-series shelf):

Grimspace
4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. Sirantha Jax was a flawed, believable character. It reminded me of Firefly, and the movie Serenity. The whole space outlaws thing. Ms. Jax is a jumper who has recently lost her pilot. Pilots and jumpers share a telepathic link. March is the leader of a renegade group that rescues her from imprisonment after a disastrous mission.

Anyway, once I got started, I couldn't put it down. I flew through this in two days. I love the world that this is set in and the characters felt like actual people, not words on a page. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I didn't really feel the 'connection' between Jax and March.

I liked it well enough that I checked the next two in the series out of the library when I returned this one.

message 78: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I love the Jax books, and for exactly the reason you did--her characters are so real and fleshed out.

And Jax & March will grow on ya--the angst is almost too much. Almost. :)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Me three. :)

I finished my Vampire-Werewolf book last night. It was crazy. My review sucks, because this book is pretty impossible to review well without giving away spoilers, but I'm not spoiling. :)

Changes (The Dresden Files, #12) by Jim Butcher finished 10.31.10 ★★★★★

The title of this books says it all--there are at least 5 major life changes for Harry in this book, and it is insane. Insanely crazy and insanely awesome. Toward the end, I just gave up wiping the tears off my face and let them drip down my neck, cuz I'd just be crying again on the next page. Sad tears, happy tears, bittersweet tears, the full spectrum. The boy wizard still bugs me at times with his romantic life, but FINALLY we saw a glimpse of maybe a chance for him to hook up with who I have wanted him to hook up with for about 6 books now.

Major cliffhanger at the end, but I knew about it in advance, so I was prepared. :)

message 87: by Laura Lulu (last edited Nov 02, 2010 07:02AM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments It's hard to describe. The 1st 2 books people say are a bit slower, most agree they start to get rolling on the 3rd. But I've liked them all. Also, I've listened to the audiobooks for all but 2 of them, and it's probably the only series I actually like more on audio. James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) reads them and he is AWESOME. I think I love Harry because of him--he just tips the scales from like to love.

One thing to note: there is no romance. It's a male character written by a male, so the few women Harry has been with or been interested in, I haven't been crazy about anyway. He is a stupid man when it comes to women. He thinks it's chivalry--I think it's a man being ruled by his nethers and making stupid decisions because he thinks women must be protected, but he just ends up making stupid decisions and being screwed over by those tendencies. But he's grown so much in that regard, and I think it stems from his friendship with Murphy, a kick ass chick cop in a tiny package. She has shown him that a woman can hold her own and doesn't need to be rescued just because she's a woman. And also that a woman can be real, and a friend, and not just someone who makes Harry lose all reason as he is ruled by his "chivalry" and hormones. Murph calls it his Neanderthal tendencies. :)

But I love so many of the characters, and even when you want to kick Harry in the teeth sometimes, you will still love him. :)

You can get away with starting on book 3 or 4 if you have a hard time getting through the first one like I did. I eventually read book 1 and 2, but not until after book 7 or 8. I think the first two are slower because of the world building and he is such a loner at the beginning and once he starts building friendships the books flow better.

message 90: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments I definitely didn't like the 1st one. Judithe, take Diane's advice and start at 3 or 4.

But Laura mentioned #3 also.

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments Judithe wrote: "Oh...so which is the better starter choice?"

I liked both one and two myself. However, I've heard that #3 is the way to go from others.

There was a short lived tv series called The Dresden Files, the plots for both Storm Front and Fool Moon were (somewhat)covered in the series, if you want to see if you like the world of Harry Dresden.

The funny thing is, the show started slow and got better about mid-way through the (only) season. In the show's case I think it was because they seemed to shy away from him using much magic in the first few episodes.

Which was just silly because he's a wizard.

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments Bookshelf: Vampires - Werewolves
The Good, the Bad, and the Undead finished 11/04/2010

★★★★

This is the second book in The Hollows series. Jenks is still my favorite character. Kisten... well, lets just say he's growing on me. I don't hate him anymore. I hate to say anything else about the characters for fear of spoiling someone.

It was a bit slow (but never boring) in the beginning but then really picked up towards the end to become a real page turner. The whole story line of this book reminds of a roller coaster, with the twists and people (I'm using that term loosely) not being exactly what they seemed. I'm definitely going to read the next one but I don't feel the need to read it RIGHT NOW.

message 99: by Laura Lulu (last edited Nov 04, 2010 01:02PM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Regarding the Harry Dresden books--I think it just depends on what kind of books you like. If you read mostly romance, you're not going to love these. But if you like mystery/suspense books and don't need the romance to make a story feel complete, you'll like these. Some people compare the earlier books to a noir private dick kinda series. But, like Diane said, from book 3 on, Harry starts to make friends & allies, and the supporting cast deepens the books.

I guess it just depends on whether or not you're the kind of reader who is fine skipping books. I liked the first 2, and I'm also the type who could never skip, I don't even skim, so I'm glad I read those also, I would always feel like I missed something important. :)

message 100: by Laura Lulu (last edited Nov 04, 2010 01:26PM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I finally sat down to see what I was going to read for the FREE SPACE, and Rachel Vincent's Prey was on there. Since I just finished it last week, I'm using it. :)

Prey (Shifters, #4) by Rachel Vincent finished 10.28.10 ★★★

I didn't like this one as much as I liked the first 3 books in this series. They were all 4★ for me. In this one, a love triangle developed. There was a hint of it in the 1st book, but it was quickly squelched and I thought everything was fine & dandy. I think I'm just not a fan of love triangles. I prefer books where there's the long drawn out sexual tension with one character instead. Or if there has to be a triangle, let it be with an unattached woman who is choosing between 2 men. Not a woman who is in a relationship with one man, and then decides she has a "connection" with another guy, too. It just made me uncomfortable. In my book, that's called a cheating whore. Just sayin'. ;)

I think I just hate love triangles so much because one of the guys will end up being badly hurt. And also because I can never fully get a book crush on a dude because I don't want to pick the loser and be disappointed. :)

Four books in, and I am STILL having a hard time fully liking Faythe. I like her most of the time, and I often see growth in her personality, but then she will do or say something that has me calling her a selfish beotch all over again. I probably shout at her in my car (I listen to these on audio) at least 3 times per book.

But don't get me wrong, I'll read the next ones. I like 'em, selfish Faythe or not. :)
