Caitlin (cait1204) | 54 comments I've read nothing but good things about The Kate Daniels series, however Magic Bites is just...slow. I know people are saying the first book is a little hard to get through, but I feel deterred. Does the first book pick up at all?

Don't give up. It took me 4 trys to get into that book. It does pick up and I ended up loving this one. After Magic Bites they are just amazing. Just keep reading, just keep reading. I love this series and now it has been confirmed that there will be 7 books to complete the series. Hope you prevail.

It does start slow Cait--but it will (eventually) get better. You just have to keep on a sloggin' away. I think its between half way and 3/4 of the way that it gets better. But its worth it cause the REST of the books are GREAT. I always figure that first books in a series are always slow, especially one that's set in 1) the future 2) an alternate reality or 3) a our world with creatures that are hidden (think Harry Dresden for this last one) So I cut them a lot of slack, especially if I find the ideas behind the series fascinating.

Don't feel bad, I had to force myself to get through Magic Bites and felt like something was wrong with me. Because so many people say that it's just the first book that bogs you down (my guess is too much world building too fast) and that the series does get much better, I made a vow to press on.

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 9 comments This is amusing - in less than 24 hours I've bumped into two other "Daniels" writers on forums.

I'm going to have to take a look at Kate's work as well now.

message 6: by Melinda (new)

Melinda (craftymommy) | 97 comments I had to put the first book down a few times too. I think at one point I didn't pick it back up for a couple of months.

Go ahead and put it down, but definitely come back to it. It's totally worth it once you've made it through. The Kate Daniels series is one of the best UF series I've read.

message 7: by Neko :3 (new)

Neko :3 | 3 comments Haha, I'm glad I found this :P I've just given up reading 'Magic Bites' because I just couldn't get through the first half of the book and I couldn't understand why so many people were recommending it. Might give it another shot :)

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments I too gave up the first time, but am so glad I gave it another go. This is, hands down, my favorite UF series. Mercy comes in at a close second, but Kate and Curran are fantastic once you get into it. (And on consecutive reads, I've really enjoyed Magic Bites - so it was just initially getting acquainted with the world that troubled me).

message 9: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (mashbay) This is one of my favorite series. I read #2 first by mistake and since then have devoured all the books many times.

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 157 comments oh, god. u r not alone. magic bites was a pain to get through, but at least it was only 200 something pages. it took me like a little bit more than a 100 pages to get through it to keep me reading. but it was so worth it.magic burns is better and magic strikes is the best book in the series so far, i havent read book 4 yet but hopefully soon. i couldnt put magic strikes down, if i hadnt had work, i wouldve read that book in a day.

but guys, as soon as you getto book you will not be able to stop. book 2 was still good and way better than book 1 b/c you understand the world a little bit better so dont give up.

Jackie M | 18 comments Keep reading! I love this series.

message 12: by Keri (new)

Keri | 50 comments I love, love, love this series and this author!

I think the reason that it feels like it starts off slow is because of the world building. It's a very different world than you'll find in most books and this series doesn't just lay it all out in chapter 1 - you kind of just jump into the story and have to piece the world together as you gain information. The fact that you don't get all the information at once if part of what makes the writing so good but you have to stay focused and really pay attention in the beginning when you are sorting out what is going on.

Once you get a feel for the world and the characters everything moves along much more smoothly - which is why everyone keeps saying to hang in there.

message 13: by Kylie (new)

Kylie | 62 comments So I persevered through Magic Bites, and at the end I thought it was okay. Everyone said they picked up so I started trudging through the second, but in my opinion it was no better or more engaging than the first. I finally gave up about 100 pages into the second. Sorry but I'm not convinced of this series supposed greatness. Much too slow and dull.

message 14: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments I liked the second one better than the first one. I thought it was a little slow until about a hundred pages in and then I started to like it. I LOVED the way it ended. I just started the third one and I like it. This is not my number one all time favorite series. But I think it's a good solid urban fantasy.

message 15: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 157 comments well it was actualy book 3 that did it for me but sometimes a book is not just for everyone especially wit the world building part, sorry u couldnt get through it.

Kylie | 62 comments Mariya wrote: "well it was actualy book 3 that did it for me but sometimes a book is not just for everyone especially wit the world building part, sorry u couldnt get through it."

Does that mean at book 3 you got into the series, or at book three you gave up?

message 17: by Mariya (last edited Sep 22, 2010 12:51PM) (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 157 comments at book 3 i really got into the series. book 3-4 are rumored to be the best in the series. i didnt care for the first 2, i mean i liked some parts in them but there were only 3 stars for me, but a lot happened in book 3 and it was better than the others for sure, i read it in 2 days. i would try book 3 and if you dont like it give up. for everyone its books 3-4 that blows them away. i knoe in a lot of series that book 1 is usually the weakest book in most series, and if i tolerated and could stand the first book thinking it was interested and see wht happened next ill try a few more books to see if its worth my time.

book 3 was just definitely more entertaining. but wht part in book 2 did u stop at wht was happening?

message 18: by Kylie (new)

Kylie | 62 comments Let's see the last part I read Kate was leaving Julie with Andrea, and she and Derek and Glastek where about to go off and do something. I've decided to give it another chance, you've convinced me. lol.

message 19: by Mariya (last edited Sep 22, 2010 01:17PM) (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 157 comments well, do let me knoe how you like book 2 when u finish...it wasnt my favorite, but still was good in my opnion, let me knoe wht u think of book 3 also, book 3 is great, more is going on and it was a more entertaining read than book 1-2. she inproved a great deal on book 3. you get to learn more about kate.

message 20: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (mashbay) Except for Monings' Fever series, this is my favorite series, but I can see how it's hard for others to get into. It's kind of gritty if you know what I mean.

message 21: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 157 comments i knoe. this is in my top 5 UF series and i knoe that the first book is hard to get through, but it is so worth it. i just wanted to abandon the book b/c it was just so hard to get into at first but i was determined to finish it and since i liked the second half of the book and since starting book 2 and 3 i have loved this series i still need to read book 4 though.

message 22: by Leslie Bhargava (new)

Leslie Bhargava | 12 comments I'm currently about 1/3 of the way through the first book and I'm finding it quite engaging. Kate is a very likable character and the writing is very good. I would agree that it's kind of gritty.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Oh I remember my struggle with Magic Bites as well. I kept putting it down and picking it up. It was very hard for me to get through! I did eventually grow to love it and this series especially magie Bleeds, the best book in this series yet!

message 24: by Kylie (new)

Kylie | 62 comments Okay, update.
I picked back up the series, forced myself to keep reading and ended up finishin the first 4 books.

I really liked 3 and 4, 1 and 2 were okay. I know have book 5 marked as to-read! I'm not going to say this series is one of my favorites, but it was entertaining, you really fall in love with the characters and Kate is one of the greatest herione's. She's snarky, resourceful, and kick-ass. I now recommend these along with everyone else.

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments I'm a little over halfway through Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, #3) by Ilona Andrews
Finally! some sex! You don't get much in urban fantasy, you have to go to paranormal romance if you want some real headboard banging- but I think I appreciate it more when it finally happens FOUR books into the series.

message 28: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (cait1204) | 54 comments Okay, let me start off by saying thank you to all of you that encouraged me to read the rest of the Kate Daniels series. The first book was painfully slow, but I devoured the other three. I absolutely loved Magic Bleeds, and I'm happy to have found a new favorite author. Now, the question is, is her other series just as great?

message 29: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 157 comments havent started her other series but i heard other people liking it but they like the kate daniels series better. but do let me knoe if u try it, i also wanna knoe other's thoughts on the edge series.

message 32: by Brianna (new)

Brianna | 76 comments I've finally read the first three books this week, and am just starting Magic Bleeds.
I've really liked the books, and it's been hard to put them down. Lol. I just love the world, and the characters.

I have read On The Edge. It was a good book, and I'm hoping to read Bayou Moon soon. However, I believe that Kate Daniels is better. Maybe it's just because the Edge books are focused on one specific couple, and that it's not an ongoing story, but....I reallyy like the Kate Daniels series a lot better.
I think it's going to be one of my top favorite urban fantasy series.

message 33: by Gaynell (new)

Gaynell (gaynellk) | 20 comments I, too, had a bit of a hard time reading Magic Bites the first time because I had some trouble understanding the alternate world. I read it once, then reread it before I read the second in the series. The second time I read it, I enjoyed it much more. If I had known, I could have gone to Ilona Andrews website first. It has a lot on the world building there. If you haven't already read the first book, it will help you to go to her website first and read about the alternate world. Then, you can probably get everything on the first read. I REALLY love this series! I think it is my second favorite after the Fever series. But, I do love the Mercy Thompson series, too.

message 34: by Ann (new)

Ann Noell (fantasyannie) Well I'm glad I'm not the only one that had trouble getting through Magic Bites lol.... but I did! The second book was so much better and I can't wait to read the next one, and the next one lol.....

I haven't read the twitter yet, but I did read the smack talk for the imaginary Bones vs. Kate Daniels match in the Alpha Showdown.

Check this out if you haven't seen it. Ms. Frost and Ms. Andrews should both be charged with attempted murder because I nearly DIED laughing!!!

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) Curran (Curran POV, #1) by Gordon Andrews I'm so excited! lol

message 38: by Jan (new)

Jan (janoda) I loved the twitter thing, especially in combination with the sample of Magic Slays. Can't wait until my copy arrives!!

message 39: by Seline (new)

Seline Blade | 4 comments I've finished with Magic Slays and I'm honest, I was a little bit disappointed. There are not so many interaction and funny discussions between Curran and Kate as in the other books before :-(
