Jax | 831 comments WARNING!!

I dunno if I'm the only one who searches/buys kids eBooks...FOR kids...
But just in case...

Last year I bought my daughters a Kobo.
And I just did a search on the Kobobooks website for:
"Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles", seeing as my daughters read and enjoyed "The Spiderwick Chronicles".
However, my search results were NOT as expected!
Instead of a list of kids books, I was offered...
"The Virgin Chronicles" and a whole BUNCH of other erotica!
I tried refining my search by book Title.
My book came up - along with a plethora of 18+ titles!
(And I've checked account settings...there is no option to turn off 18+ content)

Personally I don't think this is very good of Kobo at all!
Considering the number of younger reader materials they have on offer, their web designers really should have taken into account that younger readers may also be "perusing" what's on offer...

message 1203: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments does kindle or nook have an under 18 setting? I know a lot of people use kindle fire for their kids...

But that sucks Jax! can you at least turn off the store function so a parent can be the only one to buy the books?

message 1204: by Jax (new)

Jax | 831 comments I'm actually not sure about Kindle or Nook - however, I DO know that their search options function a WHOLE lot better!

On the Kobo - You can turn off the Wireless... but its not exactly hard for kids to figure out how to re-activate it...

Probably a good thing I refuse to leave my credit card info... one VERY good reason to use paypal!! :)
Granted... Kobo seem to be having issues with this payment option at the moment...

And Books on Board are also having some issues at the moment, so I'm SH*T outta luck on the digital book front... But that's okay - Book Depository is keeping me happy! :)

They are no longer selling books as they are trying to come up with a plan to compete with Sony, Apple, Amazon, and the like. BOB had some good deals but...

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments So GW (my university) celebrated Holi on the quad today. My roommate and I went, and it was insane! I cannot imagine a whole town participating in that unscathed.

My hair is full of red pigment. Not my best look =p

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments lol I hope you wore clothes you don't mind staining! That's the biggest mistake people make :)

We played with it the day before our wedding, and my husband's neck still had pink on it the day of the wedding. It was really funny.

message 1212: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Oh no, I figured the powder would stain and checked google just in case. Most of it washed off easily, except a bit on my forehead. i plan to scrub off more efficiently tonight

message 1219: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments you can hit the options thingy, and switch it to newest post first. the only problem is you have to do it every time. you just scroll to the recently read and read from there.

message 1220: by Llaph (last edited Apr 17, 2013 04:50PM) (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments The GR app for my phone is dumb ... it doesn't even let me see what I had previously rated a book at. It wont save my options for what to show in updates either. I think that that is mainly a voice over thing though. I have more control navigating using my phone's browser.

Fiesta is coming up ... I think the only thing I would be interested in is the music concert though. If I weren't such a slacker I could pay attention to the radio and win seats for their private area and avoid the crush that is bound to happen.
Listening to the commercial that usually goes on netted me a surprise. I listen to mainly a rock station so that is what is promoted ... new addition to the line up is Salt and Peppa ... really ... did I miss something? I had heard snoop dog was going regae ... but?

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments The GR app for the iPad is so bad I will not even use it. It is a laughable piece of garbage. I don't know how the Android version is, but it HAS to be better than the IOS version. If not, then something stinks in Denmark.

message 1223: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments I've heard the Mac version is better! You can't do the link picture of book cover thingy on the android GR app, and other things.

I just go to a web page. It's easier and just as fast. some things don't need apps. lol

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments Oh did I tell you guys my kindle broke? I got water on it, and it wasn't much, and it worked fine when I used it for a few days. but then it just stopped. i've done all the different resets and still no go :( booo i have to go back to reading on the phone or computer until I the next version of the paperwhite comes out. Or October if a new version doesn't come out. I hate LCD screens...

message 1225: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments My ex-husband dumped a glass of tea on his laptop and it worked fine for months after--till the fan konked out.

I don't know about android phones, but voice over (the screen reader for my iphone) is really easy to turn on. Listen to the books ... I can adjust the speed on voice over so it is not so bad. I don't know how the voice sounds on non iphone phones though.
Just something new to try out till you get what you are waiting for.

message 1226: by Arushi (new)

Arushi | 3652 comments Thank you for the advice and the support guys *hugs Anna*

I'll try the suggestion Zeenat made... even if I have to do it everytime it is better than scrolling down 1250 posts... that is never gonna happen.

message 1227: by D.C. (new)

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments @Zeenat - In the old days I felt I HAD to check GR, and you aren't always in front of a real browser. Now? Not so much, so the app can lay dormant. Good Riddance to that.

Too bad about your kindle. I dropped a cell phone in the toilet one time (No, it was full of duty, it was just water) but anyway, I took out batteries and left it open (Flip Phone, don't need a smart phone) for a couple of days and then it worked again.

The moral of this story is there's still hope for your Kindle.

message 1228: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Oh ... that reminds me of the time I washed my cell in a load of clothes. It still worked minus the screen. It was a long time ago and I did not need the screen at the time.

pffft @ scrolling. Try swiping through all of that without the option to nav by headings because GR is lax in adding them to their pages and you didn't figure out a different way till later.

message 1229: by Arushi (new)

Arushi | 3652 comments Bury the kindle in rice (uh uncooked dry rice, that is).... Rice absorbs water from stuff. Might help.

message 1230: by D.C. (new)

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments I've heard about the rice, too; supposed to work. There is also some type of bag you can buy cheap that has stuff in it to suck the moisture out of items.

Anna | 1680 comments We were told to use the rice option when I put my daughter's ipad in the washing machine.

Duane - I kind of know what u r talking abt.. those crystals that absorb water like anything. I think they can be found at walmart but no clue abt what they are called.

I don’t know about starting a new topic about this and I don’t want to interrupt the current one. I was looking to see if I could get some assistance with getting an av for my GR profile (hearing no photo 343423 is getting boring). I have possible parameters … I don’t want to clog up a thread though.

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments keyboard short cuts are awesome imo. With my phone if I type on it (like emails or whatnot), I have to double tap everything and split tapping and touch typing are not plausible for me.
I even made some for punctuation marks so I don't have to switch over ... like aa for ' or cc for comma.

message 1237: by Zeenat (new)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments rice would have worked if I put it in right away, but the damage was done and i think the circuits got fried :( boooo.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I'm sorry Zeenat, that's rough!

I recently switched from Android to iPhone when my android screen shattered and the iPhone was my next best option. The Goodreads app is equally atrocious on both.

Llaph, this is the random thread. It's meant for random stuff! Don't worry about cluttering it up. It looks like you haven't got an avatar yet, so tell us what you had in mind and I'll certainly have a look and see if I can find something for you. Don't be shy to ask for help! :)

On a completely unrelated note, after a bitch of a week, I treated myself to a new SSD hard drive for my computer. Man does it start up quickly now! I'm really impressed.

You are too nice sometimes. :P

I used to make my own avs and did a lot of comp art. (I wanted to be a graphics designer), since my ex decided to keep my comp I don't have any of it to show as an example. pffft
I like simple things, not busy with designs and a bunch of colors. I also have a thing for frogs and the color blue. I also really like golden poppies and tulips if that helps any.

message 1241: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments It's a tough old world sometimes and we've got to look out for each other. :)

I'll have a search and see if I can find anything nice. Leave it with me.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Can we take a second to discuss how overrated salted caramel is? I just got a salted caramel macaron and was extremely disappointed.

Also it makes me happy that roses are edible, because rose macarons are fab.

message 1243: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Claire, not sure I've ever tried salted caramel so can't comment.

Llaph, I put together some images and I've tried to describe them for you. I hope maybe one of these might do.

First, we have three frogs.

Frog Number One:

This frog is a clipart style graphic with a green frog with large white eyes set against a plain blue background. Although it's a cartoon image, the body shape is moderately representative of what a frog looks like, apart from the face.

Frog Number Two:

This frog is more cartoonish and less realistic. It's a blue colour in the middle and fades to a brighter cyan colour nearer the edges. The frog is facing directly toward you and has large green eyes and a big smile.

Frog Number Three:

This image is an actual photo of a blue frog. It's sitting on a large green leaf. The green of the leaf is quite washed out and faded, and the blue frog really stands out against it. The frog's body is quite glossy and has darker blue spots.

So that's the frogs. Next, some flowers. I tried to go for simpler images, because Goodreads makes avatars quite small and when I shrunk down images with fields of flowers, a lot of the detail was lost and they didn't look good.

Flower Number One:

This one shows a few golden poppies, though they actually look more orange than golden! The photo is shot as if the camera was close to ground level looking up towards the flowers. There is a bright blue sky in the background, with a lens flare effect for the sun.

Flower Number Two:

This pic shows a small bunch of yellow tulips with some of the green stems and foliage showing. They are leaning towards the right against a plain black background.

Flower Number Three:

This image shows a single yellow tulip with some red markings on the petals. It's set against a blurred dark green background. The flower mostly fills the pic with a small amount of the stem showing.

OK, so that's some choices to start with. Has anyone else got any pics they want to share that Llaph might like, or want to give your opinion on any of these pics?

I hope you get something you like, Llaph. Don't worry if any of these don't sound right for you. I can always look for more. :)

Anna | 1680 comments Frogs-lol nice idea Llaph. Nice pics Lannister
1. Frog 1 is cute and very clear
2. Frog 2 looks a bit manic -like it's on acid and is facing forward like its about to jump out at you. My favourite!
3. Frog 3 great if you like realism. Not sure if it would stand out once made into a small avatar.

Flower 1 the most interesting shot-low angle looking up- strong orangy reds and blues- focus a little blurred, the sun flare in the top right gives the impression of movement.
Flower 2 classic yellow tulip bunch- on a diagonal line so the shot looks a little dynamic, but might look fussy when reduced.
Flower 3- clearest image works on a vertical axis with a straight stem in the centre and bold yellow tulip (the orange stripes follow the line of the stem) set in the top two thirds of the picture. Most striking would work well when reduced. Very 'classic', but quite static.

Lannister how about this frog. See link
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=tre...
I'm on my ipad so I can't load the picture properly and I'm rubbish at image manipulation.
@llaph A photo of a Central American red eyed tree frog- red eyes, bright green body and orange feet facing forwards with only its head and eyes in focus. Sitting on a bright red leaf background which matches its eyes. The leaf is on a slight diagonal. Very bright colours.
Or some blue frogs...

semi realistic illustration on a pale purple background.
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=blu... or a kind of 3 d stretched model but it has a copyright watermark. White background.

Anna | 1680 comments @Claire: salted caramel is a US thing i've only recently seen it in UK; in Starbucks I think as a coffee flavour. Never tried it. I have however tried rose jam. In Poland you can get delicious donuts made with rose jam...ahh. My mum used to make them too. Nothing like US or UK donuts. You can buy jars of rose jam in Bulgaria. Not tried rosé macaroons though.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I love rose scented/flavored things. They're fabulous.

message 1248: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Anna, thanks for those descriptions for the pics. They're awesome and I hope they help Llaph.

The links you posted just go to the Google images search. I figured out the first two (I think!) but I'm not quite certain which image you're meaning for the third one.

However, I've made thumbnails of the first two, which I've put below.

Frog Number Four:

I added some extra background to this one to make it the same approximate proportions that Goodreads uses. This is a pic of a spotty blue frog against a pale pinkish/purple background.

Frog Number Five:

This is the green tree frog with the big red eyes sitting on a red leaf. I tried to sharpen it up a little but I think it might look ever so slightly blurred. It's a problem sometimes when you take a large image and shrink it down.

If anyone else has any suggestions, post away!

what kind of colors are there--I like the sound of that one too
frog 4 This is a pic of a spotty blue frog against a pale pinkish/purple background.

I guess it is between these three.
Frogs are awesome, I have collected some for years and still have most of them. I wear a frog necklace/charm 24/7 that I had gotten for a birthday present for my 21st from a friend. It is rather weird looking maybe ... it is a silver frog holding a ball of malachite between its feet. It is not really big and I tend to hold it and move the ball around in it when I am bored or thinking.

You guys are awesome for taking the time to look into this. :) much appreciated!

@ lannister:
golden is just the name, if you see one close up they are such a vibrant lovely color. I don't usually like orange, but I loved seeing those flowers when I walked everywhere back in middle/high school.

message 1250: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Llaph, frog number two has a pale greenish/blue background. It's like a very pale cyan colour. The frog itself has a black outline stroke. Its body is filled with a blue colour, but toward the edges it fades a little and allows some of the pale background colour to show through. It's quite a nice effect as it stops the frog being one solid, flat colour. It has two large green circles (with black outline) on the top of its head for eyes with black pupils inside.

On the flowers, I don't know that you could get golden poppies. I only knew the red ones. But some of the pics I googled showed fields of them and they were lovely.
