I hate it when people don't take good care of their books

Yep, I agree... Even with text book, sometimes I feel guilty if I have to highlight them. But I definitely don't write notes on them.

I absolutely hate it when some friends borrow my book then they fold the corner of the pages as bookmark... I HATE IT when they do that!!!

Liek if you go to a garage sell and you see the book lying there mageled. I want to walk up to that person and slap them.

Or when you lend a book to someone and it comes back like totally trashed. I lent a book to a friend once and the cover came back destroyed. I was so pissed off. I yelled at her in front of the whole class.

Let me try to explain my point without having somebody jumping at my throat… look, a book is a book is meant to be read… sometimes you come in contact with some of them that you want to cherish… and those deserve special attention, I actually have those in my closet lock down and with a warning note explaining that if something happens to them there will be blood! Now, those I read on the streets… dude I ain't gonna go crazy over it…. I just read them. if is raining the book is going to get wet… if a car decides to splash me (that actually happened once) oh well the book is going to get more wet… if I get push and I tear the cover what am I going to do? Kill the guy???? Is just a book they print thousands of them… my copy of Infinite Jest is all black on the outside and it has duck tape holding the covers together… it hurts me of course… but is no reason to go bananas… a book that gets hurt is like a soldier in a war… at least is went down doing what is supposed to… you know what I hate?? A book that’s in perfect conditions and is never been read… that’s just stupid if you ask me… so hooray for the fuck up books that died or got wounded in the line of duty….

I don’t want nobody thinking that I’m pro book bum fires… just that I’m ok with the fact that some people like to talk back to their books (I.E. people writing on the sides of their books), highlight their favorite parts, and that sometimes accidents shit happens.

I'm with Ali and Alfonso. I'm so glad they posted before me! I have been known to crack the spine so the books lies flat - I like that so much better than having to read into the curve. I also don't use bookmarks since I lose them, so I lay the book down. Sometimes I'll fold corners too! I need to replace the bookmark I lost somewhere - it was a clip and worked great.

This is somewhat like my life - I tend to be a slob because I like to be comfortable and go by feelings. I don't feel like folding the shorts I wore today if I'm gonna wear them again tomorrow! They stay on the floor in the corner. I may be a slob, but I'm clean and so are my books. The books described above are disgusting!

i too am a closet book mauler... i fold the corners down as bookmarks, sometimes i even fold the bottom corner up if there's a funny or insightful quote i want to come back to later. i break the spines (there's nothing i love more than a well loved paperback i can fold back on itself and read one handed while laying in bed or around my gigantic lap cat). sometimes i spill coffee or chocolate on them, or get cherry/pomagranate juice fingerprints on them (because that stuff does not come off your fingers with just a napkin). but this is why i prefer to buy my books and keep them around, like conquests or notches in my metaphorical bed post.

the only books i treat with any real respect are hardcover books (which i generally either inherit from friends and parents, or borrow, so i have to keep them nice), and comics (since the presentation is 80% of the point of a comic. plus, as an artist myself, it makes my skin crawl to think about messing up someone else's hard work, even if it has millions of copies).

all that being said though, if you're like me and love to break your books in like a good pair of shoes, then you should probably not try to sell them.

Cracking spines, bending back the pages, writing of any kind in books that are read for pleasure is a no-no. (text books are different. they are meant to be highlighted, written in, and folded over)

When I went to the library sale the begining of the summer, I felt so horrible for some of those poor books. Pages were falling out, covers were torn off or hanging on for dear life, one was even used as a coaster for some sticky drink :(
Spines cracked so badly you cant even read the title on them. Granted, none of them had dead things or shit on them, but still... it was tragic.

As for loaning out, I cant. I just cant. I couldnt bear to part with it, and then have it not come back to me in the same condition it left in. That would be worse than not getting it back at all... tsk tsk.

Huaaaa!!!!! Speaking of lending books... I just remembered I lent a book to this girl at work but my company fired her not long after she borrowed my book! It's not my favorite book or anything, but still it's MY book!

I don't usually lend my book to just anyone, I have no idea what I was thinking that day that I said yes when she said she wanted to borrow it.

Ugh, I have to get that girl's number to get my book back.

And I use odd objects as bookmarks too. For some reason store bought bookmarks always fail to work for me. Old receipts, old movie ticket stubs or post it notes will do me just fine as bookmarks.

If the book is good I like to keep it in good condition. If it is a waste of paper then I don’t even want to recycle it. What if it were to contaminate the rest of the recycled paper, with its crappy-ness. Nope, if it sucks I go Nazi on it and have a BBQ.
