I assumed so since Liam works in a library and is often involved with children. I work with younger children and have to keep up to date in this too.

I don't really know about library staff either. I just assumed they must be included in the new moves to make everyone working with children in any way more responsible. Maybe Liam will tell us:)

My hubby had a severe allergic reaction last night - it began with itching and progressed to big welts on his neck and chest, then rapidly advancing all over him. After antihistamines and cream for the itching, he is fine this morning! It was extremely fast acting... we have worked out the pesticides on the grapes he ate are the cause.

My reason for mentioning it is - beware of supermarket grapes (and other fruit) as the pesticide levels are getting worse. He has eaten fruit all his life - grapes are not new to him.. But the reaction was pretty much instant!

That looks and sounds awful, Brenda. Sounds like good reason to wash any fruit and veg thoroughly and hope it gets rid of it all.

Wow. Glad to hear he is now fine... Must have been a bit alarming for you both! And yes - good reason to be vigilant with washing fruit and veg (an area where I am at times slack...!).

Us too Kathryn! And our daughter has continued to nag about washing fruit! I guess the experience is one way of learning...

I hope you did too Tui...apparently grapes are exceptionally bad; I googled it last night and it pretty much says you shouldn't eat them at all unless you a) peel them or b) eat organic!

No Vicki, this was a first! And yes, we were watching for that...I would have called an ambulance if he'd started to have breathing problems:) It was certainly pretty scary...

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Lucky you acted quick Brenda! It happened to my DH last year after he came back from the shops with one of those own brand rainbow iced bar cakes, the girl at the checkout was pushing them and talked him into it. The colours were enough to put me off! He had one very small piece with a cuppa and within 30 mins he was itching and scratching all over, he turned bright red and started to blow up like a balloon so quickly. Then he started to slur his words bacause his tongue started to swell up.
I put him straight in the car and got him to the hospital..not far. Long story short they had to keep him o/night because he had another reaction to the medication they gave him!
I am almost OC about washing fruit and veg, and hands.

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Our local (big) supermarket has emptied boxes and boxes of fresh dates into a large pallet sized box on a table for people to serve themselves. I watched as people disregarded the tongs and stood around it picking through and feeling them, rejecting some, eating some. They put these things into their mouths and lick their fingers then go back for more?! Same with the grapes!
Wash everything.

Carolyn | 9868 comments Really enjoyed the Q&A special last night on changing attitudes to sex and gender. It followed on from a doco on the making of Priscilla. Tom Gleeson was a surprisingly good Chair and Julie McCrossin did a great job as a Christian counterpoint to Fred Niles, who really looked like a bit of a dinosaur. Paul Capsis was also terrific as was Julia Doulman who has had gender reassignment and Katherine Hudson who started the Wear Purple movement to support young gay & transgender people was very impressive. I thought it was a well balanced program and showed what a long way we've come as a society since Priscilla, but still have a long way to go in acceptance and gender equality.

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments On the other hand, I like to buy things with minimal packaging, for environmental reasons, but the comments above have put me off!
I'll just have to stick to my "eat homegrown fruit" rule. Our trees provide us fruit most of the year but last year my persimmon blew down in a gale and I love persimmons, so have been reduced to buying them this year. It hurts! But I still wash even my homegrown organic fruit in case of bird droppings which can carry giardia.(nasty digestive bug)
It's almost citrus season here now. Once they start rolling in, I can more easily forget my persimmon grief. Our lime tree is groaning with fruit, but it's the grapefruit that I get most addicted to. I'm not joking - I go through withdrawals at the end of the grapefruit season. I read somewhere that they actually do have addictive properties.
Sigh! I'm a grapefruit junkie.

That's the only time they ever drag out that old dinosaur Fred Niles, Carolyn, they know he can always be relied upon to hold forth with his non negotiable negative viewpoints. ;)

message 20876: by Jülie ☼♄  (new)

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments @Tui, a Kiwi friend of mine once convinced me to try an unripe grapefruit from a tree we had growing. It was still only about the size of an orange but quite dark green in colour. I thought he was joking, as he was one for pulling our legs a bit, but it really was very sweet and juicy, nice!! It still tasted like a grapefruit only sweeter. I didn't make it a habit though because I wasn't sure of any adverse reactions to eating unripened grapefruit? :)

Grapefruit do have some unusual qualities. They affect how quite a few medications work.

My mum used to love grapefruit when she was alive...ate it every day without fail, until the dentist informed her it was wearing the enamel off her teeth and if she wanted to continue eating it, she would have to rinse her mouth out with water after she ate it! And yes Phrynne, she was also informed about the affect on some of the medications she took!

My husband had a colleague who thought she was being really healthy eating at least 4 oranges per day until the dentist told her she was wearing her tooth enamel away. I think grapefruit is the only one to avoid with medication but I guess too much of any citrus is probably a bad idea.

The times we think we are being healthy and we're not! The old "hunter/gatherer" days were the best! No preservatives, no added extra rubbish!!! And we wouldn't have needed to eat so much vitamin c back then as there was a lot of variety!

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments Now I'm putting two things together I never would have thought of otherwise.

Firstly - I eat huge amounts of citrus and all other fruits. We grow our own so its free and I love it so I go for it.

BUT! I recently tried to whiten my teeth and it was impossible to continue the treatment because of my extreme sensitivity of the teeth. The pain was ghastly. Vanity went out the window.

Perhaps I should have linked these two matters before?
