I buy the SMH on Saturdays just to read about books in Spectrum and to get the Samurai Sudoku in the weekly magazine. The rest of the paper goes straight into the recycle bin.

It's raining, here in Sydney.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments Constant rain here in the Upper Hunter today. Not torrential, but enough to get the creek just below us flowing. Looks nasty in some places though. The north coast flooding looks awful.

It's been horrible..still raining, and they just said on the local news it will go all night, but an estimated temp of 30 tomorrow (higher for you Leonie!) so the humidity will be horrendous!!! I just went out in a lull to pick strawberries and tomatoes, but it started again, so I'll have to try again later!

message 7911: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments Yes, I was just watching the weather forecast - 31-32 degrees tomorrow. NOT looking forward to the humidity! Better enjoy the cool while we can.

I'd love to Michael...I'm so over it!! My daughter just rang me, and there's a drain beside her side fence which runs under the road..she said the water was 2cm from the top. They had just had a torrential downpour and it was rushing really fast! She checked again 15 minutes later and it had dropped to about an eighth of what it was...that's certainly moving fast.

Adhityani (dhitri) Bit off topic. Maybe some of you recall I picked up a new hobby last year: running. I am training for my first full marathon and the next weeks will be my high mileage training weeks. Tomorrow I will have my first 30k run -- my furthest distance so far. Am very anxious about this run... Have to decide whether to run in the early morning (5.30 start) so I can finish time for our Sunday commitments or if I should run when my little one has her nap (when my legs aren't very fresh). Hope weather is on my side tomorrow.

Good luck, Dhitri! I used to run before my back delivered a firm protest. But my max was just 10k. Couldn't see myself doing a marathon!

Good on you, Dhitri. I have huge admiration for anyone who can run and wow to attempt a full marathon is amazing!!! I can't even manage a 5 minute shuffle, although I do love walking. Good luck with it all.

Does anyone own an ark? I am going to need one soon. My dog thinks the rain is my fault. Every time I go to let him outdoors he looks at me accusingly.

He's a German Shepherd/Kelpie cross. He looks very much like a dingo, same colour but bigger and stockier.

And extremely devoted to you and your family, I bet:)

message 7926: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments Got to love German Shepherds - ours is loving, cuddly and a big sooky marshmallow. And we have a kelpie/staffy - basically imagine a black, staffy coated kelpie body with a staffy head and kelpie ears. Then add all the kelpie energy to that, and you have a dog who likes to run, chase and play. When the shepherd's tired and lies down for a rest, he gets dragged across the grass by the collar.... Just as well he's a tolerant dog.

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Good luck with the marathon Dhitri :)

I was tempted to build an ark during our recent flooding Phrynne but the rain stopped before I could get motivated - now we're having intermittent showers, high temps and unbelievable humidity - put plainly, it sucks.

I couldn't help but laugh at the idea of doggie gum boots. I'm actually anxiously awaiting the birth of my new puppy friend. I'm on the list for a female German Spitz and the mum is currently 5 weeks along. So hoping it all comes together. I had a pair of Tibetan Spaniels but both died within weeks of each other from genetic problems - my very hard lesson learned not to buy from unregistered breeders. I've currently got two gorgeous Manx kittens, a boy named Dax and a girl named Gypsy and although they're brother and sister you'd never know it to look at them. Dax is a gorgeous grey and white with strips on his back and a tail [unusual for a Manx] while Gypsy is a golden brown with very dark tipped ears and feet. Both have beautiful loving personalities and I adore them but I do miss having a dog around as well. My husband says I should live in a zoo as I'm always wanting animals :)

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments My darling German Shepherd would welcome some rain right now. We have had none down on the South Coast of Victoria. It is so dry and hot, my poor dog is just over it. He is getting older and not coping at all. i knew I liked you all for a reason, but owning a German Sheperd will make me a fan of any of you. I have had 5 german shepherds, my current one is nearly 10 (Rex). My others have all died of old age, the one I had before Rex was Sasha she was saved and had been mistreated and passed away when she was 16.They are beutiful, although Rex thinks he is a lap dog I am sure.

I adore German Speherds and would love to have another one but my current place is far too small. My Mum and Dad were actually registered Shepherd breeders for many years when I was a kid and I've never forgotten my beloved Rajah - he was the runt of one of their litters but the best friend I had as a kid. I still have pics somewhere of the two of us - we were always together :)

I can relate Tracey. When I was 16 I had a gorgeous long haired German Shepherd....Rocky. Had to give him up when my folks split up. Needless to say I was devastated but he too was my best friend.

message 7933: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments There have been nine dogs in my life, but no German Shepherds. We had a lovely Border Collie cross Kelpie cross Blue Cattle: a very strong and beautiful creature: and she lived to be sixteen.
Large dogs are wonderful, but they need to be well trained or they can be overpowering to take for a walk on leash.

Agreed! I work from home with no air conditioning, and the heat itself isn't so bad ... when it's below 35 or so. It's the 400% (feels like it, anyway) humidity all the time that makes me want to take my skin off to cool down.
