Hi Daniel, welcome to the S&L group.

message 3052: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) Hullo. I'm Geektastic, also known as Amber. I've been a longtime listener to Frogpants network podcasts and have known about the S&L podcast, and by extension this group, for ages but waited until now to do anything about it. I'm not the most active of GR posters, having just had a baby 2 months ago, but I love reading and especially love reading SF and fantasy. I started out on a steady diet of Tanith Lee, Ursula K. LeGuin and Diana Wynne Jones and have had a soft spot for genre ever since but have let it fall by the wayside a bit in the last few years. I'm hoping to reaffirm my love of SF and fantasy, and meet new people in the process.

Crissy Moss (crissymoss) Geektastick, did you take that picture at Pax? That dalek looks familiar ;)

message 3054: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) Actually it was at Baltimore Comic Con last year. I would love to make it to PAX someday, though.

message 3055: by Lowkey (new)

Lowkey | 1 comments It has been a long, dusty road, my companions on the journey have included Heinlein, Pohl, Burrows, Tolkien, Howard, Leiber, Delaney, Silverberg, Niven, Wolfe, Peake, Moorcock, Brin, Robinson, Herbert, Williams and many, many others.
Most recently Grossman, Reynolds, Meaney, Bakker, Brett, Weeks, Lawrence, Hamilton and Rothfuss have kept me entertained by the camp fire.
A special mention must be made for fallen comrades, Ian M Banks, you will be missed, taken too soon, remembered forever.

I like my swords heroic and my lasers operatic.
Looking forward to the conversation.

Recently been catching up on RA Savlatore, since the Sundering is sounding interesting. Looking forward to chatting with everyone!

Orencio (aladon) | 2 comments Greetings All. I'm Orencio
I'm a technologist and long time gamer and fantasy reader. Started with Feist, Jordan and Rosenberg and recently started on sci-fi: Jack Campbell, David Weber and Peter Hamilton. There so much out there to pick from S&L helps me choose.

message 3064: by Igor (new)

Igor Hello everyone!

I'm Igor, I'm from Croatia and am currently enjoying the second episode of S&L on Youtube, being sad that there's only 45 videos, downloading the latest two S&L audio podcasts (interview with Jim Butcher, weeee!) aaand...

Yeah, I've been a fan for only like 45 minutes or less but y'know, really glad I clicked play on the YT video and looking forward to participating on the forum :)

Hi Igor, welcome to the S&L group.

Oliver (thedexter102) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Oliver and I'm from England. I really love the podcast so thought I'd join in the discussion. :) I'm currently reading Terry Pratchett's "Lords and Ladies," I love Terry Pratchett. I'm also a big fan of Wheel of Time and classic SF. I also adore YA author John Green and many other YA authors, along with Shakespeare.

Stacy Phay | 2 comments Hello. Just thought I would introduce myself since I contributed to one of the discussion threads for the first time. Found Sword & Laser when they were on Geek & Sundry's Youtube Channel. Love reading books of varying kinds. My opinions are strong so I try not to type out loud often.

Hi Stacy, welcome to the S&L group.

message 3070: by Gryffin (new)

Gryffin (adom) Hello I'm Adom, I've been apart of the group for quite awhile but I just haven't posted anything as of yet; as of lately though I've been wanting to talk quite a bit about books and my friends don't read much so I believe I should engage more in the S&L group.

I listen to the podcast all the time, though I have not seen the show pod cast.

I love reading , and carry at least two books with me at all times. Some of my favorite authors are John Green, Suzanne Collins, Cornelia Funke, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, Michael Scott, J.R.R. Tolkien,Darren Shan, and J.K. Rowling.

I love talking with people and most of all about books so I hope to be having some good dissensions and making new friends soon.

message 3071: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Adom, welcome to the S&L group.

message 3072: by Kris (new)

Kris | 3 comments Hi all,
My name Is Kris. I'm 33yrs old and living in Columbus, Ohio. I've been an avid SciFi/Fantasy fan ever since my older sis got me Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings for Christmas when I was 11. Since then I'm always looking for the next new story to dive into. Pleas feel free to recommend something. Currently I'm looking for something along the lines of Glen Cook or Steven Erikson. Darker gritty fantasy.

Hi Kris, welcome to the S&L group.

message 3074: by Cihutch (new)

Cihutch | 1 comments Hi, I'm Lyn.
I've been listening to S & L for a few years and figured it was high time I signed up to follow the various discussions. Though sci-fi is my favorite, I read just about anything whether dead tree, electronic or audio. Guess that makes me an equal opportunity reader.

message 3075: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Lyn,welcome to the S&L group.

message 3076: by Bee (new)

Bee Turner (ineffectualdemon) Hello! I'm Beth!

I've been reading Fantasy and Sci Fi since I was a about 9. I started with David Eddings David Eddings and then went on to Anne McCafferyAnne McCaffery

I remember reading the Pern books when I about 10 and either not understanding the sexy bits or skipping them because they were boring.

My favourite authors now are Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett and Tolkien.

My reason for joining this group is because I thought it would be a good way to get exposed to new authors and have fun. Especially new Sci Fi as I haven't read nearly as much of that as I have the others.

message 3077: by Stopher (new)

Stopher C. Thomas | 7 comments Hey, I'm Stopher. I'm addicted to SF/F. It's been 4 hours since I last read either, and I have no plans to stop.
I do prefer fantasy but there is some good sci-fi out there. I have recently been introduced to some really good books/authors from watching/listening to Sword and Laser. Thanks guys.

message 3078: by Cosme (new)

Cosme (thecoz) | 3 comments Hi, I am Coz.

message 3082: by [deleted user] (new)

Greetings and salutations!

I have been on a Fantasy - Sci-Fi terror for the last few years and decided that I needed to get a broader perspective. So here I am.

message 3083: by Matt (new)

Matt Weber | 9 comments Matt here. I like Gene Wolfe, China Mieville, Harlan Ellison, Ursula Le Guin, Octavia Butler, Samuel Delany, Steven Brust, Carla Speed McNeil, and you've already stopped reading so I won't mention more (there are plenty). I'm trying to read more books by women; I'm currently at 20/44 for 2013, but I think I can hit parity by year's end. I've recently read Daughter of Smoke & Bone and How To Market A Book, and I'm currently reading Bluebeard's Egg, The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and Dust of Dreams, with Brave Story or Alif the Unseen likely up next.

message 3091: by Rusty (new)

Rusty | 1 comments Hey everyone. I'm Rusty. Fell in love with the youtube show when it was part of Geek and Sundry and have recently taken up the podcast and joined the group here on goodreads... so, there's that.

Also, spent most of my life reading science fiction, but in the past few years have branched out into Fantasy, still huge gaps in my personal genre education, but I plow through as much as I can.

I do have soft spot for hard(ish) science fiction though, not sure that will ever change.

message 3092: by [deleted user] (new)

Martin, Patrick Rothfuss, Orson Scott Card, Philip K. Dick, Daniel Abraham. Some of my favorite books( I judge these by the impact they had on me at the time that I read them) are Enders Game, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, A Song of Ice and Fire, Brave New World, 1984, Shadow of The Torturer, and Hyperion to name a few.

message 3095: by Peter (new)

Peter Gee | 5 comments Hello, I'm Peter. I've listened to the podcast for a couple of years and want to start understanding the discussion parts by joining the group!

I read more fantasy than science fiction, and my favourite series are His Dark Materials, A Song of Ice and Fire and The Lord of the Rings. I'm now making my way through The Dark Tower and Wheel of Time and enjoying them both immensely. I need to get stuck into more laser!

message 3098: by CarlosF (last edited Sep 21, 2013 01:28PM) (new)

CarlosF (calofel) | 2 comments Hi everyone,

I've read mainly fantasy and scifi since very little. Movie-related books (E.T., Firefox) then happily finding the Tolkien world and some of Asimov thanks to a childhood friend and his Dad, both avid readers since then.

I like several authors, Robert Jordan, Dan Simmons, Tad Williams, Ursula K. Le Guin, Dave Duncan, Terry Pratchett, and newest authors that got me back into the book reading habit, like Pat Rothfuss and Brandon Sanderson. Thanks also to Kindle to make things much easier to find! I still like real books though.

'Coerced' back into video gaming to get a feel of the music they have (for a music production/composition gig). Not playing obsessively as compared to my Arcade years, I prefer RPG, puzzle and adventure games.

I found Sword & Laser while 'youtubing' for writer's interviews, it was a great find :D

I'm right now backtracking to start with the first podcasts. There are tons of them by now (translate that to hours of goodies waiting to be heard) and started watching the first couple of episodes at Geek & Sundry.

I look forward to the group's postings!

Cheers

Carlos F.
