Over the past month I’ve been in a Marvel binge. Mainly, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s super popular right now, and part of me feels like all these movies that are being made just for me are being sullied by all these other millions of people watching and enjoying them.
I mean, they’re mine. I get to enjoy them, not other people.

So what about this book in particular? Well, here’s the thing, I think this one is really about setting up the long game of the series. I note that the first book covered the first few levels of the dungeon, but here we slowed things down a bit and focused on level 3.

Which is fine, the lore of the larger universe is expanded upon, and characters are introduced which may come back later, or whatever. Again, I don’t remember so I’m sort of BS’ing my way through this, much like I did through most reports I had to write in school. Why am I doing that, since this is entirely for my benefit and no one else’s? Great question. I wish I knew you when I was younger. I could have avoided a lot of grief in my life listening to that kind of wisdom.

The truth is that I’ve had a very busy year. Not so busy that I couldn’t take the time to write down thoughts when they are fresh (funny, I’m eight books into a another series at the moment, and I AM writing notes about how I feel as I read them. So I’m learning. Although, it must be pointed out that it’s weird that the whole point of writing reviews at all is so I can get enough of a trigger to recall the details of a book long after I’ve finished reading it. So I’m now making notes to later upload as ‘reviews’ just so I remember stuff. Damn, I have a complicated mind. Not a smart one, just complicated), but still busy.

I don’t really do New Year’s resolutions, but if I do have one, it’s to be way more current on these. I really want to have actual thoughts to look back on. Although I do enjoy sometimes going back and reading about a book and finding out that around that time something interesting happened in my personal life that I wrote down instead of reviewing. So there’s that.

Sigh. What is happening? Is this a review or what? I don’t know. I used an AI to write a song about this though.

This is my first experience reading a sub-genre called “LitRPG” and I honestly feel like it triggered something in me that I”m not so sure I like. I mentioned something last year about enjoying a story where characters ‘level up’ as they progress throughout their adventures. This is like the ‘roided up version of that.

It is right there in name of the sub-genre. In this case, our hero is a big’ ol dummy with a heart of gold and a no-good cheating girlfriend. While taking care of her cat while she’s off with a ‘friend’ in the Bahamas* earth is attacked by aliens.

I don’t think it’s much a of spoiler to let you in on the fact that earth’s resistance lasts for about a femtosecond. And within a few pages (or more accurately, a few minutes of listening) most of earth’s population and infrastructure are destroyed. The remnants of which are forced to participate in a real-life D&D campaign under the watchful eye of some nasty intergalactic baddies.

And to be perfectly honest, I have no idea if the physical book version of this is even readable, because this is the greatest audiobook performance I’ve even heard and overshadows any storytelling expertise by the author. The narrator is a genius(named Jeff Hays) who went all-in on making this story what it is. I legit thought this was a full-cast audio drama for a while and had to check multiple times to see for sure. The voices were amazing, the scenes were genuinely performed (and not read, if that makes sense) and it was incredible to listen to.

Seriously, infinity stars.

*Maybe it was the Cayman Islands, or Costa Rica. Could have been the Virgin Islands. Point isn’t in the details there. I haven’t actually read this since late last summer. So the fact I remember the premise at all is a small miracle, and probably a testament of how much I enjoyed this. ...more "
