15.4 - Fall Equinox
Skinned AND Crashed
Both have 7 letters in the title.

20.4 - The Plot Line Thickens
I chose crime with a satisfying ending as my favourite plot, so I read Tell No One.

30.1 - It's in the Cards
First card: Two of Hearts (published in an even year, published after Jan 1 2000) - I read Fool Moon which was published on Dec 31st 2000.

Second card: Jack of Hearts: (male author, published after Jan 1 2000) - I read Brother Grimm by Craig Russell which was published in 2006.

30.7 - Good Spirits
A. I read A Murder Is Announced which was published in 1950, before I was born
AND
B. I read Secret Scribbled Notebooks by Joanne Horniman which has a girl smiling on the cover.

30.7 - Donna Jo's task as suggested by Meghan: GOOD SPIRITS
In my state, Colorado, we make a lot of beer and have many Breweries. Just look and see:
Colorado Breweries. In the Fall there are also a lot a beer Festivals across the state and all over the world. For instance, All Colorado Beer Festival, Great American Beer Festival, and, of course, Oktoberfest. These are just a few of many that happen throughout the Fall months. This doesn't even include the many others around the world. Now raise our glasses/bottles/cans to the give cheers to the joyous event of reading.
A. Since beer is the oldest alcoholic beverage, read a book that is older than you. In other words, read a book that was first published before you were born. Requirement: Include publication date in your post.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by RL Stevenson
AND
B. Since beer brings about the "good spirits" in people and relaxes those after a long day, read a book with a person smiling on the cover. The smile could be a laughing smile, a smirk, a picture-perfect fake smile, or just a simple grin. Requirement: Post a link to the cover of book for part B or describe the cover.

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments 5.3 THANKSGIVING
Freeze Frame by Heidi Ayarbe

This book is AMAZING. Seriously. Highly recommend it.

5.4 I'm Glad My Mother Didn't Name Me...
Blindsided by Priscilla Cummings

..."Priscilla"! Because the natural nickname for it is "Prissy" or something like that, which is almost worse than the actual name. It makes my teeth hurt.

5.9 Comfort Read
How They Met, and Other Stories

David Levithan is one of my favorite authors, and while some stories in this collection were better than others, I'd still consider this a comfort read.

10.1 Shorter Days
Zombies vs. Unicorns

Epic win, though I think the best part were the dialogues between the editors prior to each story. Most of the stories were good, but my favorites were Maureen Johnson's (I was glad I didn't have a class when I was reading it because I kept cracking up), Meg Cabot's, and Cassandra Clare's. I think it's interesting that I didn't particularly like Scott Westerfeld or Libba Bray's stories, though they are two of my all-time favorite authors.

10.4 Leaving Civilization Behind
Girl at Sea

This book was torture to get through. So whiny. And obvious where it was headed. It took place mostly on the ocean, where the protagonist spent the summer hunting for treasure with her psychotic father and his band of random, stereotypical co-hunters.

Dark Road to Darjeeling (Lady Julia, #4) by Deanna Raybourn
by Deanna Raybourn

The picture of someone holding a camellia blossom is just beautiful. (Tea plants are from the genus Camellia and related to the flowering plants I grew up with here in the southern US for those that didn't know.) I love tea, and adore seeing my tea brew in a glass pot. There is a quote in the book that talks about how when the hot water hits the leaves they release. So for me the cover was not just beautiful, but also conjured the idea of the lovely smells from really fantastic tea.

(On a side note, I think this is the most points I've ever gotten during a challenge. Not sure what's different.)

30.8 - BETH NC's task: FALL BACK INTO READING

I used the month of October.
For 2009, I read Razor Sharp by Fern Michaels, 249 pages. I didn’t think it was as good as her other Sisterhood novels - but a light read for the plane nevertheless.

For 2000, I selected On Writing by Stephen King, 297 pages. This was an unexpected find – I really enjoyed seeing how King’s mind ticks (and it’s not nearly as depraved and horrific as I thought it would be!).

Petra I completed Task 15.1 (New Horizons) by reading The Magician's Nephew from the Christianity shelves.
Over the years, I've heard lots about how good the Narnia series is but have never read a single one. I wish I had read them earlier. This one is such a cute and refreshing story. I would have loved it when I was younger. The World that is portrayed is fun, adventurous, mysterious and the parallels to the Bible are there but not "in your face". I really liked this story.
I would read more from this shelf but with some reservations. I'm going to continue with the Narnia story and see where it goes.

20.4 THE PLOT LINE THICKENS - The Lost Symbol (4*). I like movies like National Treasure and The Da Vinci Code where there are clues that lead to more clues until the mystery is solved. I thought this was a little wordy at the end but a good read overall.

30.7 - BEER FESTIVAL - For the book older than me I chose A Study in Scarlet (4*). And my smile book was Shanghai Girls (4*).

Read a book written by an author OR one with a main character that has a name you're sooooo glad is not yours. (NOTE: The author or main character must share your gender. In other words, no A Boy Named Sue situations). (EXAMPLE: Fannie Flagg -- Love her books, but sooooo glad my name's not Fannie).

I read Laced with Magic by Barbara Bretton Laced with Magic (Sugar Maple, #2) by Barbara Bretton

The main baddie is named Isadora -- I am glad my mother did NOT name me that!

20.1 Bookmarks Magazine

Still Midnight by Denise Mina

From the July/August 2010 issue

Another strong book from Mina. She excels at characterization. Dark, gritty, but filled with humor

20.7 The Melting Pot

How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez

The reverse storyline was intriguing. In the Time of the Butterflies detailing the political situation the family flees is a great complement to this book

25.4 Stay Tuned

I rolled a 4- 2010 Vampire Diaries w/paranormal

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

I rolled a 6- 1960 Bugs Bunny w/animal title

The Invisible Gorilla: And Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us by Christopher Chabris

30.2 Ins & Outs

A. Exterior: Staircase of a Thousand Steps by Masha Hamilton

Strong book with excellent sensory imaging- it made me want to shake the Middle Eastern sand out of my shoes, but one of the plot devices was heavy-handed. Still, very enjoyable

B: Interior room: The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

Very impressive book- great characters, very engaging and suspenseful. I was really impressed by her use of multiple narrators and the way the voices changed and matured as the book progressed. I wish the author had not included the 1810 prologue- knowing what I was reading towards took away from the experience

30.5 Life Lessons

I rolled a 2: Learn from your mistakes- "beautiful"

A Beautiful Place to Die by Malla Nunn

An exciting debut novel- vivid characters set in 1952 South Africa.

I rolled a 3: Mind your p's and q's

Smoked by Patrick Quinlan

Maybe the worst book I finished this year- I should not have wasted my time: gratuitous sexual violence, implausible plot, and an interesting lead character was completely under utilized. A negative star
