Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments wow...soo many volunteers!! if i need ppl i'll do them in a first volunteered order...but will PM you and post if you are selected (and i'll post the re-pairs in the original pairing thread as well)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Deebotte - thanks for the recs...I think i'm going to try What Looks Like Crazy because it sounds cute and then hopefully the Nora Roberts and maybe Amanda Quick books off the TBR! (and the Crazy one fits in with a challenge for another group, so that is awesome - book with a pink cover)

Ari (moochew12) | 159 comments Welcome Is Mee...Kissa! I hope you find one of my picks good, if not I'd be happy to accommodate to other needs.

To Read:
Mockingjay- I found this very lacking, but it’s still ok.

Linger- I’ve heard good things about this series

Waking the Witch-I believe this one just came out. Should be good.

Life As We Knew It- I tried to get into this, but a bit eh for me. One night when they are supposed to be able to see the moon, it becomes closer to them than imagined and it basically changes their lives.

New Reads:

Chosen by Jeanne C. Stein
- This girl has issues controlling her powers, and something is trying to be in the way of that.

The Returners- Not really sure what's this about. But something people buy when they get hunger games.

Night World No. 1: Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder- She writes a bit differently than most vampire-y books, but it’s pretty good.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- I was not into thriller mystery myself, but this was good. So something out of the box you may want like or not...don't be deceived if at first it's boring.

I hope you enjoy it Dee. I like the character (even if she is a bit clueless about her own life) and am reading the 3rd book this month for a month to month challenge where I need a character who is a psychiatrist (I figure psychologist is close enough).

message 306: by Kami (new)

Kami (katmiv) Hi Lindsey, I hope I'm picking for the right person...I think there are a couple of us Rachel's...

Anyhow, here are my recommendations for you. :)

From your TBR:

Gena Showalter's The Darkest Passion
I can't help but love each and every Lord of the Underworld.

Karen Marie Moning's Darkfever
All my fellow pnr reading friends have highly recommended this one. It's next on my queue to read as well.

Larissa Ione's Pleasure Unbound
A great start to a fun series.

Sherrilyn Kenyon's Fantasy Lover
Fun fun series!! It's a little daunting starting out because of the amount of books already out, but it sucks you in and the good news is you don't have to wait a year for the next book to be released. :)

New-to-you (I hope) suggestions:

Since you seem to also love vampires:
The Awakening and The Struggle by L.J. Smith
Evernight By Claudia Grey
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead.

Erotica:
Broken by Megan Hart

Mystery:
The Woods by Harlan Coben

Historical Romance:
Again The Magic by Lisa Kleypas

There you go. I'm sorry I took so long to post your recs. Happy reading. :)

SheSwitches, thanks for the recommendations! I'm really interested in Sunshine, but it looks like that one's gonna be hard to find. If so, then I'm thinking Soulless. All great sounding recs though. Thanks again. :)

heya Ari..
thanks for picking so many good books for me but really i wanted to go to a new series so it was a toss up between The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Returners.

I would have gone with The Returners... i saw that you added it to your to-read list as well :)... but it wasn't in my local library so I went for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
It seems just a bit too complicated... but hopefully i'll be able to keep up... hehe... thanks again!!

Hey Lucia,

Sorry, I didn't get updates from this thread and I didn't think to check cause I have a similar challenge going on in another group. Next time, you can PM me.

Anyway, I'll get the categories together and get back to you within a couple of hours!

Sorry Mel..oversight on my part-I'll change that next. I didn't forget about pairings I promise. I had a birthday on Tuesday and it's the first week back at school so it's a little hectic. You'll have it by late afternoon or early evening (Eastern standard time) I promise because I have to go to school for a meeting tonight.

message 315: by Mel (last edited Sep 02, 2010 05:27AM) (new)

Mel (mel_b) Hi Lucia,

First of all: sorry for the delay.

Second of all: it was hard to stick to the challenge rules. I know we’re supposed to recommend 4 books from a TBR shelf and 4 new books. But the case is: we don’t have that many books in common. There are only three books in your TBR that I actually read and I don’t like recommending books I haven’t read yet.

That’s why I’m going to bend the rules a bit (*batting her lashes at Rossy*) and I’m going for the following:

TBR shelf:

The Hobbit by J.R. Tolkien: Because it’s a classic that I think everybody needs to read. The Hobbit is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, my favorite series of all time. If you have seen the movies and liked them: the books are still 100 times better!

Dark Lover by J.R. Ward: This is the first book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, referred to many as ‘literary crack’. And it’s exactly that: once you’re hooked, there’s no going back. The series, characters, plots are larger than life, sometimes cliché, sometimes wanting you make you roll your eyes, but it just sucks you in, and before you know it you’ll be loving it and reading all the books back to back! Just warning you…

Brand new:

You have quite some YA novels and quite some (regular) romance novels on your shelves. You also had a m/m romance. So I’m working from there and adding a little paranormal influences to the twist and work right up to urban fantasy.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins: I see you’ve read and liked the Hunger Games. I’m going to read it for another challenge this month! This will be a good way to catch up with the series (I heard the third one was really good too, it just came out).

Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas: Since you seem to like romance novels, I thought you might like this one. It’s the first in The Wallflowers series and it’s quite good. Kleypas added just enough humor and there’s quite some angst going on.

A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole: This PNR book is the second in the Immortals After Dark series (the first book is a short and many people skip it, though I have a link for you, it’s free on the net). The IAD series is very good: snarky heroines and brooding heroes, lots of action, lots of sizzle and most of all: lots of humor.

Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs: This series is the first in a PNR series by Patricia Briggs. It’s a sweet little story about a female werewolf, who’s saved by the son of the leader of the werewolf community. The saving has happened in the prequel to the story (a short called Alpha & Omega in the anthology On the Prowl). Now the hero and heroine must learn to live together and trust each other. It’s very cute and the sequel is even better.

Among the Living by Jordan Castillo Price: This book is the first in the PsyCop series. I saw you had read a little m/m (by Tere Michaels) and I thought you might enjoy this one (although there’s more sex in this book, be warned).
The series is basically an UF series (the main hero is a medium who’s able to communicate with the dead) with a m/m romance. The world building is fantastic, everything feels so realistic and vivid. The plots are always good, there’s quite some humor, but the strongest points of the series are the characters. The main character will captivate you. You’ll want to hug him and throttle him and everything in between. The secondaries are also great.
Rossy can testify to how great this series is, she gave me the final push to read it and I’m ever thankful!

Touch the Dark by Karen Chance: You don’t have many UF books on your list but I had to recommend you this one. This book is the first in the Cassie Palmer series and it’s my favorite UF series (together with the Dorina Basarab series by Karen Chance). The books are action packed, high paced and funny. There’s lots of sizzling moments and romantic tension. And the heroes are phenomenal (Mircea, Pritkin and Louis-Cesare, yummm…)

So there you go. Hopefully I chose something to your liking :)

TBR: The Hobbit Or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward NEW: Catching Fire (Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflowers, #1) by Lisa Kleypas Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega, #1) by Patricia Briggs A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole Among the Living (PsyCop, #1) by Jordan Castillo Price Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer, #1) by Karen Chance

message 316: by Lucia (last edited Sep 02, 2010 06:15AM) (new)

Lucia (lucia_rafael) Hey Mel thanks for the recs and I don't mind more new books :)

I think I'm gonna go with Cry Wolf, Secrets of a Summer Night and Touch the Dark.

All sound really interesting and the best is I already found them so I can start reading them anytime.

Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega, #1) by Patricia Briggs Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflowers, #1) by Lisa Kleypas Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer, #1) by Karen Chance

message 317: by Mel (new)

Mel (mel_b) I'm glad :)

I'm sure you'll love all the books. Touch the Dark suffers from a little info dump at times (first book syndrom) so be warned, but it's still very entertaining nonetheless and the rest of the series is grrrreat. And I'm wondering how/if you'll like Pritkin.

I hope you can find the prequel to Cry Wolf. It's not necessary (you can find a little summary in my review of Cry Wolf) but it does add to the story (and the romance).

After looking at the recommendations you gave me, I know that I will definetly read them all at some point, but for the sake of the challenge I am going to read Darkfever and Evernight for sure, However I would also like to read the rest of them so if I come across the others in my looking I might just read them too! So really this is all kind of tenative... Thanks so much for the Awesome Recs!

message 328: by Pam (new)

Pam | 1048 comments Mel-
I immediately took the four Sherrilyn Kenyon books I recommended off the list...kidding. I've never read one so you're safe this month.

From your TBR list (which is fabulously extensive)
The Book Thief I listened to this as an audiobook and enjoyed the narration. It's disturbing but well-written.

Coraline This is a very quick read aimed at a younger audience than The Book Thief. Also disturbing but I loved this book. The movie does not do it justice.

Naked in Death The first in the JD Robb/Nora Roberts. Again these are a series I have tended to listen to rather than read but I like the character and the future setting. This may not be my favorite but it is the first. Again a quick read.

Finally something lighter Mine Till Midnight I really like this Kleypas series and I don't like all her stuff. You don't necessarily have to read them in order but I like the nonconventional family and nonconventional love interests.

New recommendations
Dangerous Games You seem to like edgy--this was edgy for me but may not be for you.

Show No Mercy Macho bodyguard--first in series

Running Hot Paranormal quick read. I love Krentz in all her forms.

Kill Me Twice Another bodyguard type first in series. If you like Brockmann, you'll like these.

Black Ice Bonus for making you wait...I really like this series too.

I feel like somewhere in my brain is a great recommendation but after spending the day reading education plans for 40 students, it has definitely hidden itself. Happy reading. Sorry for making you wait.

Fran | 12278 comments Hi Courtney!

So happy to give you some recs. I went through your tbr list and there isn't one on there that I have read! But a few I have heard good things about so here goes-

TBR-

1.Darkfever- also on my tbr
2.The Help- heard great things
3.Just Let Me Lie Down: Necessary Terms for the Half-Insane Working Mom- this looks like it could be very funny and useful!
4.Moon Called- another I want to read
5.My Love Lies Bleeding- this sounds really good, when I looked it up I was surprised that it had humor-sounds serious but it's not

New To You-

I saw that you like vampires, dead things, some YA- I tried to give you a little of each- let me know if you want something different, would be happy to pick again for you

1.Dark Lover by JR Ward- I have read the entire series and love it- Ward's men are vampires to die for
2.Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson- I have recently started this series and really like it. Chick-lit vampires- Betsy is the queen of the vamps and has a shoe fetish- very cute
3.Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins- YA paranormal. Teen witch girl gets sent to boarding school for other-worldly beings. Mystery, teen angst - very good. First book, next one out next March.
4.The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter- first book in the Lords of the Underworld series. Demons posssessing Greek Gods bodies- sexy mythological hunks!
5.Skin Game by Ava Gray. I recently read this and really liked it. Different- hero and heroine are shady characters, very shady. The story is gripping and fast-paced. Classified as PNR because heroine has a gift but she is the only one and it is an integral part of the story, but the rest of the world is very normal. Seedy and corrupt, but normal.

Hope you find something you like!

~~*Julie Kawalec-pearson (jewel77) | 85 comments Hello Luna-

glad to see you here! i think you picked a great challege to start this site off for you. I have foung that i really have expanded my reading taste. There are some books that i never would have picked up without some of the rec's i have gotten in this challenge. I hope i can find something you would like.
I picked out your TBR rec's right away.

TBR-
Catching Fire and MockingjayI love this Series and you have already started Hunger games! You started the first book- need I say more.

ShiverI literally just finished it and LOVED it. I can't wait to read the next one. It was a very intriguing love story. A girl gets bitten by wolves when she was a little kid and ends up becoming obsessed with wolves- one in partiular.

Vampire AcademyLove this series- i am on book three. The author creates a very vivid new world for a new kind of vampire. I really like the heroine in this book- she is not a pushover kind of girl. i love that she can take care of her own.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattooi haven't read it yet- but its onmy TBR list too!

NEW REC's
i think we may have some differing taste so bear with me and maybe you will find something you like.
Since you haven't listed them as read yet, maybe something about hte books puts you off but I have to recommend
City of Bones i really love this series. it is about a teenage girl who learns some very strange things about her life and the world she is living in. Things are not always as they seem. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's StoneI love this whole series. They are one of the few books(or anything) that i waited in line for at midnight to get. I am sad the books are done. The books are so much better than the movies so I hope thats not holding you back!

My Best Friend's GirlI read this book several years ago and really enjoyed it- i am a sucker for a cute cover1 It is not about someone stealing someone else's girl. It is about a women who takes care of her friends daughter by her ex fiance! What a mess but a very good read.

one more its kind of crazy: Real Murders
I love charlaine Harris- although i haven't yet read her most popular series. This is the first one i ever read from here. It is about a lonely librarian who loves true crime. and strange things start to happen around her. it is a very well put together mystery. it got my hooked on all her other books!

One more since you seem to like romance novels. You already had a nora robert on your tbr list. I rember really loving Blue Dahlia and the other two books in this series. You may want to check them out.

i hope you will find something that you enjoy. It was hard to tell exactly what you may be into since you just joined buti bet next challenge you will have 100s of books in your tbr and read pile! Let me know what you think. if it was a bust and nothing sounds good- let me know and i will try again!

message 334: by Leah (new)

Leah (leahkarge) Mojca, here are my selections for you. I hope you can find something you like and want to read. If not, just shoot me a message and let me know, I can pick something else out for you :)

TBR
1. All I Ever Wanted - I haven't read this one myself, but I've heard good things about it and it's sitting on my TBR shelf, too. I've read one of Kristin Higgins' other books, too, and I loved that.
2. Lover Mine - I absolutely loved this book. If you've read the others, I think you'll appreciate this one, too.
3. An Unforgettable Lady - This was the first Jessica Bird book I've ever read and I really liked it. It's not like Ward's Brotherhood books, but it still has certain elements to it that lets you know it's by the same author. Anyway, it was really good.
4. To Catch A Thief - This was my first Christina Skye novel and I really liked it. It was a very good story.

All I Ever Wanted by Kristan Higgins Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #8) by J.R. Ward An Unforgettable Lady by Jessica Bird To Catch A Thief (SEAL and Code Name, 10) (Draycott Abbey #10) by Christina Skye

NEW
1. Mine Till Midnight - I noticed that you have some Lisa Klepyas already on your shelves. This is a great historical romance and I highly recommend it.
2. The Darkest Night - I saw that you've read one Gena Showalter book and didn't really like it. While this is also a paranormal by her, this is some of her later work so I think it's more developed. I hope you'll give it a try and see what you think :)
3. Under Her Skin - This is the first in Susan Mallery's Lone Star Sister series. I noticed you like a lot of contemporary romances and this is one of my favorite contemporary romance series.
4. Perfect Chemistry - This is a Young Adult Romance but I thought I'd change it up and bit and give you something new. I really loved this book. I thought the second one was the best so far but this is one of my favorite YA series.

Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, #1) by Lisa Kleypas The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter Under Her Skin (Lone Star Sisters, #1) by Susan Mallery Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry, #1) by Simone Elkeles

Like I said before, I hope you can find something from these you want to read. If not, let me know and I'll try to find something else :D

message 335: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments Oh Miss, I am so sorry you didn't get any recommendations before, but I am so glad to have the chance to fix that for you. I had such a great time looking through your bookshelf, I went a little overboard with the recs so I have been working on cutting them down for you. I hope you find something that interests you this month.....

From your TBR:
1. Covet - I see you have read and enjoyed the BDB, while this is set in the same place and has a few of the same characters, it is not BDB, but very interesting for a new series.
2. The Darkest Night - This has become one of my favorite paranormal romance series, not the normal vampires, these are demon possessed warriors.
3. A Gentle Rain - talk about an emotionally charged romance that takes you by surprise. I adored this book, and seeing it on your tbr almost makes me want to read it again myself.
4. Royal's Bride - for a historical romance, this is a good series and I thought Royal was the best.
5. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella - you seemed to enjoy the Twilight saga, and this is a neat look at that battle from Eclipse, from a different point of view, even knowing how it ends, it is still fun getting there.
Covet (The Fallen Angels, #1) by J.R. Ward The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter A Gentle Rain by Deborah Smith Royal's Bride by Kat Martin The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner An Eclipse Novella by Stephenie Meyer

New to You:
1. Maybe This Time - I just finished this one and have to say it has quickly been added to my fav list, it is a contemporary romance with a supernatural twist (ghosts).
2. Morrigan's Cross - this is a vampire series by Nora Roberts, the first book is a little slow because of set up, but once I got started, I was hooked.
3. Mine Till Midnight - If you are going for a historical romance, Lisa Kleypas is one of the best - especially this particular series about the Hathaway family. I am currently reading the 5th book myself.
4. The Host - more of a Sci-fi than the paranormal that the Twilight Saga was, but for me this one was more emotional and character driven (they were more developed in some ways).
5. The Girl Who Chased the Moon - Sarah Addison Allen has an incredible way of intermixing supernatural with a contemporary romance, believing in the possibilities and the what ifs. Really anything Sarah Addison Allen is a good recommendation.
Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie Morrigan's Cross (Circle Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, #1) by Lisa Kleypas The Host by Stephenie Meyer The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen

Well, again I hope you find something that interests you this month, if not let me know. Happy Reading :)

Gigi | 1149 comments Hi Diane (Deebotte)

Love the books on your shelves. I haven't read much on your TBR so, I've picked books for you that I've heard good things about. I tried to pick a little of everything.

TBR
Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare (HR)
Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh (PNR)
The Unsung Hero by Suzanne Brockmann (Suspense)
Lover Eternal by JR Ward (I noticed you read Dark Lover. The series gets even better after DL- in fact, books 2 - 4 especially, were much better than Dark Lover.) (PNR- vamp)

In case youre in the mood for a contemporary:
Truly Madly Yours by Rachel Gibson

NEW
Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning. (Heard great things about this time travel romance)
Cry No More by Linda Howard (This book is a must-read at some point. Warning- its a tear-jerker, but worth reading. This was a pick it for me challenge rec (forgot which month) and it was the best book I read that month.)
A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux (Another time-travel romance. Another pick it for me challenge book that was the best book that month.)
The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley (The hero in this book was amazing! The author was sooo creative when she wrote this hero. You'll walk away from this book completely in love with the hero. The love story was so touching. If you don't choose it this month, pick it up at some point. Its not like a typical HR. For starters, older heroine and a very unique hero.)

I hope you find something you like. If not, let me know I will be more than happy to dig again.

Happy reading!

I can already tell you it's a tie between All I Ever Wanted (because I just love Kristan Higgins) and An Unforgettable Lady (John Smith caught my eye immediately as he appeared in Heart of Gold)...I just might end up reading both.

thanks Debbie :)

Wow your recommendations are wonderful I may read them all in the end, and I love that you've introduced a new author to me, Sarah Addison Allen.
So, I will start with The Darkest Night because this is the second month in a row this book has been recommended to me, it must be something special :).
Also interested in Morrigan's Cross, I didn't know Nora Roberts wrote vampire books.

Thank you again!

I see you pick for Ashley FL, and she gave her recommendations to LL. So i have to assume she saw your recommendations but didn't pick yet which one to read.....You could send her the post with the recommendations that you made through PM, just in case she missed them?

Thanks Pam,

I think I'll go for the following books [book:Naked in Death|268602] and Coraline. Maybe also Dangerous Games although I'm not sure about the third yet.
It'll be a while before I can start cause I need to order the books first and wait for sending.

Thanks!

Elke (ejurca) | 1810 comments Hi Melissa! It's great to be able to reccomend some books to you! I tried my best to pick these out. If you would like anything different please let me know and I will choose again!

TBR
The Pirate Lord
The Beach House
Dark Lover
Soulless...I might try this one!

New to you
Mine Till Midnight(HR):this is the first of the Hathaway series..Loved them all!
Dancing with the Devil(HR/PNR): this one was pretty good, its got Historical Romance with some Paranormal!
Agnes and the Hitman(CR/Chick-Lit): this one is one of my faves from Jennifer Crusie.
The Kite Runner: this one I chose because it is something completely different. It was a very good book!

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments I finished my first of several that I am reading from Melanie - (great recs, thanks). Read Love in the Afternoon really enjoyed it, I am sad to see the end of the Hathaway family, but now I guess I can start on her bow street runner series. Love Lisa Kleypas and couldn't wait any longer to read it (especially after Melanie's gentle nudging).

- I am so glad you like the recs. After looking through your bookshelf, I think you will really like Darkest Night and Sarah Addison Allen, you have quite an eclectic taste (so do I) so it was fun to flip through it. I think it is the only vampire book Nora Roberts wrote, she wrote a ghost trilogy (In the Garden) and another supernatural type trilogy (Sign of Seven) that you might like also (if you are in the mood for another series).
- lol, ok, I will stop now - you have enough to choose from. haha
