AMC Upcoming Original Series: The Walking Dead
AMC has greenlit The Walking Dead as a six-episode series based on the comic book written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. The Walking Dead tells the story of life following a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, traveling in search of a safe and secure home. Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually, Teachers, Strike Back) will portray the lead role of Rick Grimes while actor Jon Bernthal (The Pacific, The Ghost Writer) will portray the character Shane, who worked with Rick in the police department before the zombie disaster. Other cast includes Laurie Holden (The Shield), who plays Andrea, one of two sisters who join the survivors of the zombie plague, Steven Yeun as Glenn, an expert scavenger and Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break), who plays Rick's wife Lori.

The Walking Dead begins production in June in Atlanta with six, one-hour episodes for season one. The series is set to premiere in October 2010 during AMC Fearfest, the network's annual blockbuster marathon of thriller and horror films. AMC announced development of The Walking Dead in August 2009 and announced the pilot in January of this year.

Should be either wicked or awful. I hope to be able to check it out and see.

Jennifer | 4 comments You can watch a "pirated" trailer on youtube from this year's Comic Con. It looks pretty sweet, and I can't wait to see it when it premiers in October.

message 3: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments Yeah, I saw some "behind the scenes" kinda trailers, but nothing that clipped the show. Should be interesting. I hope it's good. :)

message 4: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments I spotted another trailer and I'm so excited about this show! Looks like it'll be a mix between "28 days later" and "Dawn of the Dead". Can't wait!! :)

message 5: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments LOL! I am cool until they start running, that's what freaks me out. The whole slow drag is ok.

message 6: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments The first episode was very good. Really reminds me of "28 Days Later" ...waking up in the hospital and everyone is dead or missing and "Dawn of the Dead" ...zombies, baby!

Anyone else watching it? I'm looking forward to Ep2.

message 7: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments LOL! I'm looking forward to Ep2. Sounds like it'll be another good one, yay!

message 8: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I watched the first ep as I ate lunch today and totally forgot that the zombies would be enjoying their meal at the same time...munch, munch, slurp...Luckily I have a strong stomach and kept on eating. ;)

I enjoyed it but those zombies are slow, Frater's zombies are better, they can run and at superhuman speeds, that's totally scarier. Andrew Lincoln was hilarious in Teachers and Jon Bernthal in The Class and Eastwick. They were good in this. I can't wait for them to meet up and they start feeling guilty about you know what.

I'm definitely watching the second episode tonight. I think I'm only 5 days behind you guys this time, yay!

message 9: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments YAY! I am really lovin' this show. It's done very well and even though the zombies are slower, they are freaky as all get out. That lady draggin' herself at the end.... ewww! LOL! I'm anxious for the whole reunion too. Should be interesting.

Don't you find it strange though that she took off without even a note, could'a just said, "Had to run, hope you're alive" or somethin'! LOL!

message 10: by Rachel-RN (new)

Rachel-RN (rachelgoodbyeborders) | 1368 comments Love this show!! Can't wait for the DVDs to come out. It's that good, I want to be able to own it.

message 11: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments I agree, Rachel! :)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Steph wrote: "Don't you find it strange though that she took off without even a note, could'a just said, "Had to run, hope you're alive" or somethin'! LOL!"

LOL! That would've been the polite thing to do!

Looks like the reunion will be in ep 3. Can't wait! Anyone wondering whether you-know-what was going on before the zombie holocaust? I hope not. I also hope that condoms are readily available and are being used -that's all I'm saying. *zips mouth shut before spoilers spill out*

message 13: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Nov 14, 2010 02:28PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments LMAO! Yeh, let's hope it was just a post-zombie 'comfort thing' and not earlier. Dunno though.

I know a note would've thrown off the whole 'gotta find my family' thing. But come on! LOL!

Looking forward to episode 3.

message 14: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments The gangbangers totally surprised me, that bit with the grandma was hilarious! That was an excellent episode. The hand, ewww! Made a nice scare tactic though.

message 15: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments LOL!! Yeah, they pissed me off though. They kept saying, "Your people attacked my people..." when actually they jumped that dude outta nowhere, yah? WTH!? But, the gma was a hoot. I'm sure that's where they'll all be heading now, ya think?

Also ... good to know that curly haired dude lied about hubby and she really didn't know. Was so glad they addressed that, but my hubby is still peeved that no one in the camp is saying anything about the two of them to her husband. I told him (my hubby) that I'm sure they have bigger things to deal with that getting involved in their romance dramas. LOL!

message 16: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Was just watching the repeat and the bolt in the ass was funny too. *sniggers*

I don't think the peeps in the camp knew about them being together because they snuck off to do the deed. Otherwise wouldn't the son know? Or one of the other campers would've mentioned it to the wife, maybe?

"I'm sure that's where they'll all be heading now, ya think?"

Do you mean the country folk moving to the city folks' digs? I'm not sure. Even though the city is easier to defend, it'll be harder to survive there what with all the dead and the dwindling food resources. The electricity and running water aren't gonna last forever either.

message 17: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments LOL! That was funny.

Yeah, you're probably right. That'd be my guess too.

So, the latest episode proved that guess (of mine) wrong. Makes sense though, like you said, nothing to hollar about there besides add'l people. And that would just mean less food to go around, etc.

When the sister "woke up" ... creepy.

REALLY lovin' this show!

message 18: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments In the latest one, I really thought the group was done for. I was even tempted to see how many episodes were left and whether it was the last one! I didn't though, I held on.

I'm so glad the grieving woman changed her mind as I didn't want the old man to die, I kinda like him.

But dude, the cop, he tried to rape the other cop's wife, WTH?! I know he was drunk but...and I liked him too :(

message 19: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments Yeah, that was a close call. But, did you notice how they not only made it out in time, but also managed to grab their weapon stash too?? LOL!

Me too! I kinda felt like she wouldn't let him die with her. Glad she didn't. Also glad he stayed and didn't let her die b/c of her depression over the loss of her sister. Thought it was good the CDC dude had someone to hold his hand in the end. Think he could'a warned them a bit sooner though? They could'a packed up supplies, food, etc and gotten the heck outta there b4 all the drama. Guess that wouldn't have been as suspenseful though, yah? :)

Right?! What an ass! He better get a grip and PDQ. The hubby is gonna eventually either find out or figure it out. Wonder how he'll handle it.

message 20: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I didn't notice that! That's cheating! Yeah, he (CDC guy) could've warned them but he told the truth: "once that door closes...". He was just very literal and er, a little crazy! No human contact in over a month, yeah I wouldn't be too sane in that situation either. The extra supplies woulda been nice.

Hubby now seems to be alpha (alpha? Too many shifter books!) as the other guy is losing it big time.

message 21: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments Well, I don't remember their weapon stash being in that main control room, but they (while running for their lives) somehow had them with them at the trailer. :)

Alpha - LOL! Yeah, he is and yes, seriously losing it!

message 22: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments What do you think Jenner (the CDC guy) whispered to Rick at the last moment? He mentioned something about false hope, or no hope or no chance ... can't really remember exactly what ... and then pulled Rick in real close and whispered something to him. Speculations are running wild in my brain. LOL.

1. One of the group is sick? Don't really think this is a possibility.

2. The zombie bug is going to go airborne? Don't really think this is it either, because Jenner admitted they still don't know what causes the zombies.

3. Maybe he told Rick about another possible survival outpost?

Guess we'll find out when the new season starts, when is that exactly? Anyone know.

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments October 16th, baby! Can't wait! :D
I'm not sure what he would've whispered - good guesses though.

Here's a link to the WD Comic Con preview for S02. Only viewable in the US though, I think. Buggers. But, I'm sure it's out there on YouTube or such.

And I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually growing to respect Darryl. He came through more than a few times during the course of the episode.

message 25: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments I did. I did. I did! :D LOVED it! I agree, Darryl is growing on me too. Damn it! LOL! J/K! Nah, he did come through (view spoiler)

message 30: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I just started this series, I watch it while I run on the treadmill. Only 2 episodes in, but it is so good!

message 31: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments That it is! Are you just starting with S01, Regina? It's only 6 eps long. S02 is good, but I want MORE. The last two episodes haven't been bad, but they ended too quickly.

message 32: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Steph I am on season 1. I am up to episode 4 but I don't know if I can find episode 1 of season 2 anymore. I see I can still see episode 2 on the AMC website though. Darn! I agree it seems short. But I love the characters.

message 33: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments Ah, that sucks. The first season was way too short, but I'm pretty sure this season will have more episodes. I was spoiled by the extra 30 min in the premiere ep for S02. The characters are great. Enjoy!

message 34: by Daffodil (last edited Nov 01, 2011 05:43AM) (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Haven't watched the most recent episode yet, it's still on my DVR, but I must say: Darryl really came through again in the previos episode. His "of course the only choice is to keep searching" (paraphrasing here) was outstanding!
There's been a lot of talk about his potential in the series, since he is a brand new character and never existed in the print version.

Steph, do you get the "Talking Dead" follow-up show, too. It's a half hour show of interviews, polls and viewer questions. Just wondered.

message 35: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments Darryl has definitely surprised me and continues to with each episode. I actually like the guy this season.

Nope I don't get that. But, super happy we get the show. What's the TD about? Is it live? Any good tidbits to share with the class? :)

message 36: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments The first time it airs, it's live. Interesting tidbits here and there. During the first episode, the poll question was: How long would you search for someone elses lost child, knowing you were in a zombie migration path? (or something like that) At the end of the show, the results were 99.9% "Not at all." LOL. The second episode of the talk show started with an apology about the broken poll and news that the tabulator had been fixed.

Some of the things they discuss are interesting, I don't feel like I'm wasting the half hour anyway.

message 37: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments Ah, man. That sounds fun. 1/2 hr isn't bad at all. Although, I wish they'd use that 1/2 hr towards the show instead. :D

Would you search? I think I probably would, at least for a while. My guilty conscience would kick me if I left w/out at least trying to find her/him.

message 38: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Darryl is my favorite character. I think he was tainted by Merryl, but on his own he has grown. I would continue to look for her especially since there are signs of living.

So my husband and I are loving it, but some things are really bothering us as far as believability:

1. That nobody is building walls (see As the World Dies trilogy by Rhiannon Frater). How can they camp out and not think about barricades and walls?

2. The giving up of guns and then forcing everyone to sleep outside – silly.

3. Why stay at that farm (for the temporary duration or even want to for longer)? There are abandoned farms just adjacent to that farm. Darryl found one – go there, build a barricade and be safe.

4. The small trips to pharmacies and stores to pick up one item here and there, rather than stockpiling. (again see As the World Dies trilogy by Rhiannon Frater)

5. Lori not admitting to Rick that her and Shane were together and Shane not admitting it. Really, they thought he was dead. I would think at the end of the world Rick would be able to move passed any jealousy and anger and just be thankful that Shane kept them alive and well – and has stepped aside. my husband claims he would be able to put this aside. :)

6. Shane shooting Otis in the leg and not in the head. Really? I don’t think Shane would do this (create a more painful and messy death than necessary), but yeah it added more gore to the scene.

7. Oh and everyone sleeping outside of the huge farmhouse – what kind of person is Hershel that he doesn’t invite people to sleep inside or tell them about nearby abandoned farmhouses?

Sorry I just had to get that off my chest!

message 39: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments So you're all caught up then, Regina? I've wondered why they haven't even considered settling in one place, at least for a while. I guess moving around and keeping secrets creates more drama, keeping it interesting but I'm getting bored by this now. I'm not enjoying season 2.

message 40: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments Regina, I have had some of the exact same questions. As Ames pointed out, I'm sure it's all being done that way to create more suspense. Unfortunately, it is proving to be more unbelievable.

I absolutely agree re: the stockpiling and finding your own place. There are a thousand houses they could've camped out in for the time being. NO idea why they wouldn't. Esp, if they are liking the seclusion of the farmhouse, when there are others in the general vicinity. That's just stupid - tents vs. a secured house? Why?

My guess as to why they haven't created a walled in area, like Rhiannon's ATWD, they seem to want to travel in search of something. Or maybe someone. I don't know.

The back and forth for supplies is dumb too. Like you said, why risk multiple trips when you could take everything you needed or thought you might in one trip? Except if they are traveling on horseback, large supply runs would be harder, I guess.

Shane shooting Otis in the leg was definitely more for visual effect on the audience than anything else. Shooting him in the head would've allowed for the diversion without his suffering. But, where's the fun in that? LOL! I'm sure that will eventually come out.

I'm kinda bummed about the quality of the episodes this season. By that I mean the stuff that's happening. Each episode in S01 was an on-the-edge-of-your-seat kinda experience, whereas this season there is only one or two small things that really interest me. The rest of the show seems to be filler. I was thrilled they were making the season longer, but it seems they've done that by watering them down in a sense. Does that make sense?

I'm sure one of the people in the group will break Hershel's rules causing them to get the boot and force them to move on.

Do you think the pillow setup in the closet at the place Darrel searched was from the little girl? I wish they'd find her already - either alive or dead. How long are they gonna drag that out?

message 41: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments But would the zombies have gone for Otis if Shane had shot him in the head. He would have been dead flesh as opposed to live flesh at that point. On the other hand he would have been fresh flesh, LOL.

The zombies don't automatically go for the kill bite (more for dramatic impact, I'm sure), so we've never really seen what happens when the person they're attacking dies. Or at least, I've never noticed what happens.

As for me, when the zombie apocalypse, or any other apocalypse, happens, you can look me up at the nearest bookstore or library, whichever has less windows and a sturdier foundation. ;D

message 42: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am glad I am not alone, I was wondering if my husband and I were being super critical. I think watching them build and establish something would be interesting, that is one thing that is so cool to *watch* in this genre, or at least it is from my perspective.

The pillow set up does look perfect for a small person or a young child, but I have no idea. My husband thought it would be physically impossible for a small child to get that far out of sight from adults, especially those men in good condition and used to being in the woods. If the writers have thought about this - then maybe she is with another adult? Has anyone on this thread read the comic book series it is based on? I checked out wiki and it seemed kinda different in terms of characters. And Steph, I think you are right about the gun and Hershel.

Daffodil, I think a human shot in the head seconds ago would still be considered delectable by a zombie. ;) I will be heading to my parents, their basement is stocked with so much darned food and they have their own private well. :)

message 43: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments LOL Daffodil! Nice choice, if they also had a good food/drink stash. Or were close to a store.

Nope, not alone, Regina. Yeah, I'm surprised we haven't seen the little girl yet. I would'a thought Darrel would've found her last episode.

Do the episodes feel a bit more watered down than season 1? It's almost like they are spacing out the good stuff since they extended the # of eps this season.

message 44: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Steph I think it is definitely more watered down than last season -- I watched a 10 in the space of 4-5 days, so I have a great point of comparison. LOL.

message 45: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments That's right, I remember your marathon viewing. I'm glad you can confirm that because it's been bugging me since this season's 2nd - current episodes. Still love the show, just don't love every minute of every episode like with S01.

message 46: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Me too. Exactly.

message 47: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments :( Maybe enough fans will get the writers to understand that and either the rest of this season or next one will be better. :) At least, one can hope.

message 48: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I haven't read the material the TV show is based on, but I know some things that happened originally. Even though the writer's aren't following events exactly, I always try to be careful about what I say.

With Glenn's discovery at the end of the most recent episode and Maggie's previous reaction to the well-walker's death, I think it's safe to say we know why Herschel has forbidden guns on his property. I agree the action has been a little mild so far, but the farm surprise is sure to change things drastically.

Also, it hasn't been all bad. The continual action of the first season made Rick and family the main drive and focus. The slower pacing this year has allowed for more character highlights. A more even balance of those two points would be nice, but the chance to get to know Daryl Dixon better and have moments like the Cherokee Rose dialogue almost makes up for that failing. ;D

message 49: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32734 comments You're right, Daffodil. (view spoiler)

message 50: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I really like Darryl. :) He is my favorite. I also enjoy Shane's character, even though I do think he is a little crazy.

I was screaming at the tv at the end of that last episode! OMG what a finale!!

When does the next season air?
