message 51: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) Read 2 books that have opposite words in their titles (ie: hot/cold, in/out, up/down, etc.)

message 52: by Luckngrace (new)

Luckngrace | 292 comments Read a book that reminds you of a childhood memory and tell us about it.

message 53: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) Read a book with a compass direction in the title (ie: north, south, southeast, etc.)

message 54: by southpaw285 (new)

southpaw285 Someone may have already suggested this, and really I'm cheating by copying off the "Last Letter" game, but maybe:

read two HF books, connecting last letter in title of first book, beginning letter in title of second book

still a great idea, and really, it's not copying, it's paying homage!

message 56: by southpaw285 (new)

southpaw285 Thank you, Jen. Now I don't feel so bad about being a copycat.

message 57: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) Read a book with a flower in the title?

message 58: by Luckngrace (new)

Luckngrace | 292 comments Gayle wrote: "Read a book with a flower in the title?"

Ooooh! That's an interesting idea.

message 59: by Rachel (new)

Rachel G (anplica) | 280 comments I've been saving up! Here are a few of my most recent ideas!

Read the HF that's been on your to-read list the longest.

Read a HF that has a month in the title.

Read a HF that has a number in the title.

Read a fable/parable book. (not sure how many of these that are out there...)

message 60: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) I came up with another one while making supper.....

Read 2 books with the same title but by different authors.

message 61: by Luckngrace (new)

Luckngrace | 292 comments I like them all. Aesop's fables is a good one and is so old it may be free on ebook. I'll have to check.

You came up with some good ones!

message 62: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 55 comments Not sure if it's been done before or has already been mentioned but... book with a food on the cover? or food in the title?

message 63: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 77 comments How about a HF book that takes place in the state or county where you lived during your childhood?

message 64: by Luckngrace (new)

Luckngrace | 292 comments Read 4 books with titles containing: king, queen, princess, prince, czar, emporer, empress, etc. They must all have different authors and may be from any genre. I think this one should get 100 points.

message 65: by Rachel (new)

Rachel G (anplica) | 280 comments Luckngrace wrote: "Read 4 books with titles containing: king, queen, princess, prince, czar, emporer, empress, etc. They must all have different authors and may be from any genre. I think this one should get 100 points."

I had a similar idea last night! :) Read a HF with a card suit or card "name" in it (King, Queen, Jack, Ace, etc)

message 66: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) Rachel, you're such a card!

message 67: by Rachel (new)

Rachel G (anplica) | 280 comments Gayle wrote: "Rachel, you're such a card!"

Some might call me a joker. ;)

message 68: by Luckngrace (new)

Luckngrace | 292 comments Go to the HF Group polls thread and read 2 books from any month or different months. This is a good way to read some of the books that didn't win.

message 69: by Luckngrace (new)

Luckngrace | 292 comments Thanks Heather. Just thought of another one:

Read a book with Islam, Muslim, etc. in the title or subject matter.

message 70: by Luckngrace (new)

I just thought of a problem with requiring a certain book from the tbr list. A lot of my tbr books were added when I entered First Reads contests and may not be available. So maybe if this task is picked, we could have a bit of latitude in the selection.

message 71: by Luckngrace (new)

Luckngrace | 292 comments Read an HF about Australia.

Read a book featuring mother/daughter or father/son.

message 72: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) Don't know if this one has been done yet, but:

Read a book set in Russia/Soviet Union.

message 73: by Holly P (new)

Holly P (hlp0221) | 137 comments Read a book about a historical figure who met an untimely end

Read a childhood favorite

Read a book set in the country you would most like to visit

Read a book from a historical fiction subgenre you don't normally read (historical fantasy, historical romance, historical mystery...)

Find your chinese astrological sign and read a book published in one of the years under your sign
http://www.c-c-c.org/chineseculture/z...

message 74: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) Read an HF book with an animal in the title (or the author, like Joan Wolf).

message 75: by Rachel (new)

Rachel G (anplica) | 280 comments Holly wrote: Find your chinese astrological sign and read a book published in one of the years under your sign

Or a good twist to this would be to have the zodiac symbol animal in the title or the book features it. For example, if your the year of the monkey, you read the book The Monkey's Raincoat.

I suggested this a ways back, but was shot down!!

I never meant to shoot it down, I was just pointing out that Libra doesn't have an animal. Sorry if it came across as being against the idea in general.

What do you mean you were shot down? In this thread? ALL suggestions are going into the pot and I'll be choosing the tasks that I think will make for a good challenge. :)

It was just pointed out that it would be difficult for certain star signs to find a book. I think the example given was that a person that was a taurus couldn't find anything to do with a bull. I still think it's a good idea, and Djrmel - I didn't even think of Libra. Is there some sort of icon for that sign? Googled it - looks like it is scales, as in used for weighing things. Hmmm....

And I think Holly's suggestion was for Chinese astrological signs, which may be different and possibly a little easier to find something.

Yeah - I would think the Chinese zodiac would be easier since they are all animals.
Rat
Ox
Tiger
Hare
Dragon
Snake
Horse
Sheep
Monkey
Rooster
Dog
Boar

Lisa | 32 comments Luckngrace wrote: "Read a book that reminds you of a childhood memory and tell us about it."

Love this idea!

message 82: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 32 comments Might be interesting to read a Non-fiction and a fiction about the same historical figure. (kind of playing on the challenge this time to read about your favorite historical figure)

I had an idea that would require its own board but would be fun. A moderator start the board with a specific HF book suggestion (Like read Memoirs of a Geisha). If you want to read that book, you reply, and also suggest the next book. If you don't want to, then wait until someone suggests one you want. This way, we will all be taking and giving a book suggestion for someone else! What do you think?

We could have an outside the box category where you have to read 2 or 3 books that are NOT HF. (Or one :p-)

also, my 2cp is that the astrological sign is a great idea... it just needs to be broader than the animal. Like Libra could be having something to do with air (even in the title) or Venus. Or since it has to do with scales, it could be about a judge, or justice. As long as you can explain the connection (even character born under that sign), I think it could work!

message 83: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Lisa, I love your idea about taking a book recommendation and passing one along!

message 84: by M.G. (last edited Dec 03, 2010 10:00AM) (new)

M.G. Scarsbrook (mgscarsbrook) | 10 comments Read a book by an author born the same year as yourself...

message 85: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 55 comments When will the new criteria for the next challenge be posted. I joined this one about three fourths through so am hoping to do better next time around!!

message 86: by Maude (new)

Maude | 732 comments Re a Taurus who couldn't find anything to do with a bull:
Bull Run
The Bull and the Spear (1st in Prince: The Silver Hand Trilogy
Raging Bull
Sitting Bull
Papal Bull

message 87: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) I do not know if this has been suggested yet, but how about reading a book off of the Banned Book List. Each year the ALA has a list of banned or challenged books.

message 88: by JC (new)

JC (jmnc) | 499 comments Thanks for getting this started again jennbunny! We totally need some great ideas, this is a short challenge!

I had an idea while driving today (does anyone else do that?) and was thinking of something to do with chess: names of chess pieces in titles (rook, knight, king) or chess related words, chess pieces on the cover, etc.

message 89: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) Good idea JenC.

Like this one too!

message 93: by Gayle (new)

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) Don't know if this one has been done or not.........

Read a book with one of the ancient 4 elements (earth, air, fire, water) in the title

message 94: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) There are so many books that are challenged or banned each year and it is just pathetic!

message 95: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) Would love to do the banned books too! My library has an event every year where they focus on banned books.

Some other suggestions:

Read HF/Fantasy about a mythical or semi-mythical person (Fairy tale heroes, Greek/Roman mythological figures, Mabinogion heroes, King Arthur, Robin Hood, etc.)

Read a book (mostly) set on a ship

Read HF translated from another language (bonus points if you read it in the other language?)

Read a book set in the area you grew up in

message 96: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) I like your suggestions Marleen!
The ship one is nice and original. Also the extra points for the languae part. Maybe it could be also an idea on that one to do something around the language so you are more limited in your choice of which original language.

But now that I write ...maybe being limited isn't that great! :-)

message 97: by Holly (new)

Holly Weiss (hollyweiss) | 278 comments Some ideas for the challenges -
Book including the story of a Supreme Court Case

Book with "House" in the title.

Classic set in historical times, aka Dickens

message 98: by Emily (new)

Emily Read a post apocalyptic/natural disaster HF book (like one about Pompeii, fall of a civilization, etc).

message 99: by Maude (new)

Maude | 732 comments Nice ideads Holly and Emily. I would love to read about a book re a Supreme Court Case.

message 100: by Rachel (new)

Rachel G (anplica) | 280 comments Read a HF that alludes to music or musical instruments in the title.
