Carolyn E | 239 comments I am currently reading "Plain Fear: Foraken," by Leanna Ellis. I am about 2/3 of the way through and hope to finish it today. Believe it or not, it is a wonderful Amish/vampire story, and I highly recommend it!! I hate to put it down. Hopefully, there will be more similar stories from this author.

message 305: by Tia (new)

Tia I just finished Like Dandelion Dust. I am almost finished with Heaven Is For Real; I am starting today reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Had to put down The Knight by Steven James for a while it was getting really intense. So my reading is all over the pages right now.

message 306: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I'm reading a fascinating non-fiction book about the Mitford sisters, The Sisters: The Saga of the Mitford Family by Mary S. Lovell. The eldest sister, Nancy, was an author and I'm going to be studying her this semester. I mentioned this to Simon's step-mum and she lent me this book as she loved it. It's so hard to put down! I'm not usually like this with biographies.

I am just about finished with The Wonder of Your Love by Beth Wiseman. I loved the Plain Perfectseries and could not wait to read the Land of Cannan series. This is the second book and so far I've loved it too. I took about a 2 month leave from reading and I'm far behind my goal for the year but that's okay for me.

message 308: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Strack (netsiren) | 75 comments I'm about half way through "The Waiting" by Suzanne Woods Fisher. I've got so many other books to read it's not even funny. Then I went and bought 2 more today at the bookstore.

I haven't read Like Dandelion Dust but the movie was on TV the other day. It was very good. Heaven is For Real is a great book!

Finished The Survivor. Loved that series. Will start The Mercy today.

I enjoyed this one -- I hope you do too. I just finished Kelly's Chance by Wanda E. Brunstetter. I'm getting ready to head out on a week's vacation with the ladies that got me started reading. Can't figure what to start next but will take my kindle along so I have plenty of choices!

message 316: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I've just finished a Kindle freebie, No Place for a Lady (Heart of the West, #1) by Maggie Brendan which was a fairly enjoyable historical romance, if lacking in a few areas. I'm now reading one of our group reads, Buried Sins by Marta Perry.

message 317: by Joy (new)

Joy | 5 comments I just started reading The Redemption of Sarah Cain by Beverly Lewis. So far it good, just like all her other books. :)

I just finished What the Heart Sees: A Collection of Amish Romances by Kathleen Fuller. Now on to our other September read!

message 320: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I am reading The Thorn by Beverly Lewis. I was just approved by Bethany House to review The Mercy so I am reading the first two books of this series so I am ready. I have not read a book from Beverly Lewis since The Heritage of Lancaster series, The Shunning, The Confession and The Reckoning. It will be a nice change!

I'm enjoying Buried Sins by Marta Perry -- what's everyone thinking?

Seems Caroline's late husband was really something else.

message 327: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments I just started Edge of Grace by Christa Allan today. So far I am liking it, but I was quite unsure about reading this book because it has to do with a character's struggle about her gay brother and it is Christian fiction, and my personal opinions differ from those generally held by most Christians concerning gay rights. Still not sure how things will resolve, but pleasantly surprised so far.

message 328: by Carolyn E (new)

Carolyn E | 239 comments I am currently reading Plain Jayne by Hillary Manton Lodge. It is a delightful, light-hearted romp through a fictional Amish community in Oregon!! I love it.

message 329: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (finulhour) | 5 comments Kristy and Barbara Ann, I cried when I read Ocean's Apart, too! I believe that was the first book I ever read by Karen Kingsbury. I really like her books.

message 330: by Kav (new)

Kav | 28 comments I think Plain Jayne is up for an award right now, isn't it? Glad to hear that you like it, Carolyn. I dithered over buying it a couple of weeks ago. I'll have to go back and pick it up.

I just stopped off at the Christian bookstore on my way in to work today and picked up four books. Just started in on A Heart Revealed by Julie Lessman and then I'm going to read The Survivor by Shelley Shepard Gray.

message 331: by Carolyn E (new)

Carolyn E | 239 comments To Kav: Plain Jayne has the usual ups and downs of most Amish stories, but it also has a delightful humor that sets it apart from other Amish stories and makes it a truly enjoyable read. I am hoping to read the second book in this series, Simply Sara, as soon as I can get a copy of it. I hope we will hear more from this author.

I've been meaning to read Plain Jayne for some time, it sounds a bit different from the usual Amish novels!

Right now I'm reading Love Finds You in Lancaster, Pennsylvania by Annalisa Daughety which is an enjoyable story, but so far it hasn't grabbed me yet. Still got 60% to go though!

message 333: by Carolyn E (last edited Oct 02, 2011 03:14PM) (new)

Carolyn E | 239 comments I, too, am presently reading Love Finds You in Lancaster, Pennsylvania by Annalisa Daughety. I am on Chapter 24, and my reaction is the same as Rachel's. So far, it is an enjoyable story, but not spectacular. I would probably give it 4 stars out of 5.

I reading Operation Bonnet: A Novel by Kimberly Stuart. The back cover states "Not your grandmother's Amish fiction" and I'm agreeing with it. I'm enjoying it -- haven't had a lot of time to read this past week -- but did look forward to getting the book back in my hands today.

In the end I gave it 7/10, so 3.5 out of 5. I really liked Caroline and Michael but Lydia Ann and Simon sadly just weren't as interesting to read about. Plus, the conflicts between the couples at the end were just a bit too similar. Still, a sweet story.

Right now I'm reading The Heat of the Day by Elizabeth Bowen for university and listening to Plain Paradise by Beth Wiseman as I do the housework!

I just finished The Judgment by Beverly Lewis and plan to start The Mercy tomorrow. I think it'll be my last sick day since I started antibiotics, so I'll have to do all the reading I can before Wednesday!

message 337: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I'm still trying to read The Heat of the Day by Elizabeth Bowen, it's taking forever to trudge through! But everyone from my English class seems to be feeling the same, thankfully. Nearly finished listening to Plain Paradise by Beth Wiseman, only got a couple more hours to go - it's a bit sad really, I'm loving this book so much! I've also read N or M? by Agatha Christie for my English class and I've got Falling to Pieces: A Quilt Shop Murder by Vannetta Chapman on the go on my Kindle right now. I seem to constantly have one real book, one audiobook and one Kindle book going right now! Surprised I'm not getting confused yet!

message 338: by Carolyn E (new)

Carolyn E | 239 comments I don't have a Kindle, but I, too, always have one real book and one audiobook going at the same time, although I decided I don't like listening to Amish fiction on CD; I would rather read it myself. Also, it takes too long to "read" an audiobook. But if the reader is good, an audiobook really makes the story come alive.

message 339: by Tina (new)

Tina Watson | 222 comments I'm reading Along Wooded Paths: A NovelTricia Goyer.

Not too far into the book but it is really good.
Got to love Mem Sommers and her surprise.

message 340: by Christy (new)

Christy (blissbooksandjewels) | 17 comments I hope to start on both of Tricia's Amish books here in the next few weeks. The second one just came in yesterday's mail.

Right now, I'm reading False Pretenses: A Novel. Took about 15 chapters for the story to really get going, but I'm hooked now. Once I finish it, I plan to start on Measure of Katie Calloway, The: A Novel and Desired: A Novel of Samson and Delilah. Gonna be a busy week!

message 341: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments I am reading Something Old by Dianne Christner, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and am about to start October's group reads!

Carolyn E | 239 comments I have noticed several favorable references to Jennifer Chiaverini's Elm Creek Quilts novels, but have never read any of them. So now I have just finished reading The Quilter's Apprentice; what a wonderful story!! I understand there are 18 books in this series. Don't know if I will be able to read all of them, but I do intend to read more of this series. I loved this first book.

Carolyn -- The characters came to be my friends after I got into more of the books. I have read them all... some are historical others follow the timeline. I just received [book:The Wedding Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel
from NetGalley and can't wait to start it.

message 344: by Carolyn E (new)

Couldn't sleep and since I finished The Mercy by Beverly Lewis, I picked up my kindle and started The Wedding Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel.

I just finished chapter 1 and love how the author has re0introduced the characters and given some of the history. It's almost like it hasn't been months since I read about these folks. Can;t believe how late it is -- I better get to bed!

message 347: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Ooh, I've added the quilting series to my wishlist, looks interesting.

I'm still reading Falling to Pieces: A Quilt Shop Murder by Vannetta Chapman on my Kindle, but I've taken a short break to read a book that arrived through my letterbox the other day from one of my favourite children's authors, Ten Rules for Living with My Sister by Ann M. Martin :)

Rachel -- let me know about Ann Martin's book. I may have to get it for my daughters who are sharing an apartment and are sometimes challenged with it!

Lisa -- The Shakers did have their quirks and they had firm rules, but that's what made them who they were.

Lisa, the group read this book back in April. You can read the discussion here:

I personally thought they were very odd especially how they separated families. It seemed more like a cult than a way of life to me!
