Next Chunky read
When will the book discussion start? I want to nominate a book but my TBR stack (all with library due dates) is fairly large.
I really want to read North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. I loved the miniseries and recently found a nice paperback copy of the book... its pretty chunky. ;)
Sonja, was the North and South book you posted made into a miniseries too?
I remember a miniseries called North and South, about the Civil War south, which stared Patrick Swayze, and it was based on this book
North and South by John Jakes. There were also two other books in the series, Love and War and Heaven and Hell.
Just wanted to make sure the book you listed was the one you were thinking of. :o)

How funny that two books with the exact same title were both made into miniseries with the exact same title, one on BBC in the UK, and one on TV here in the USA. :o)

I'm anxious for this release

had no idea that there was a second chunky North and South in existence, nor that Follett was putting out another epic. this thread has ended up being very educational!

I've read all three and thought that the first one was still the best :p
I have a suggestion - I don't know if this has come up before, but I think it would be nice if we had a folder for Chunky Reads. That way our discussions re: the books and noms for next chunky could all be in one folder. What do you all think?
Did you read The Pillars of the Earth as a group read yet? If not I recommend it. If so, forget I mentioned it!
All the chunky reads are in the same folder as the monthly group reads. If you guys really want I can create their own folder but it seemed odd for one book every month or two. You can find all the archived discussions though by going through the "Group Reads" folder.
I LOVE that the chunky book reads have taken off and have become such a fixture of the group. Thanks Meg!
I decided to go through all the old chunky reads and add them to our group bookshelf and created a shelf called "Chunky Reads".
From now on the current Chunky Read will be displayed on our home page with the start and stop dates of discussion along with the other current read of the month.
Meg let me know if I missed any and if there is anything else I can do to make it flow better.
Thanks,
T~

Thanks Laura! Can I nominate one? (If so, I nominate Gone With The Wind (sorry, can't link from my cell) though I'm not sure if that's chunky enough, lol!)
Sure, you're in the nom thread lol! I was thinking about that one the other day. I read it a few times but I was under 18. It was my moms favorite book. I wonder how I'd see it as a reread. I bet I'd like it better. Jo's nom: Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
There's a problem with the poll though. The Brothers Karamazov and Moonstone are both on the same poll choice.
Don't know when the poll closes, but it looks like Gone With the Wind will be the next chunky book read. I read this maybe 30 years ago and enjoyed it.
Yes this is the last day for the poll and Gone With the Wind will be next. Hope you will be joining us, we miss you.
I'm thinking not either....I enjoyed it, but it's so long for a re-read! I hope you all enjoy it tho.
