Next Chunky read
Meg I had set the close day to go through the weekend but I can certainly close it earlier for you.
Laura, my nom didn't even get my vote - I changed it so that perhaps I'd get to read something of interest to me. In fact, almost anything but Gone with the Wind would have been of interest. I just finished Moonstone, so could have discussed that.

Aww, thanks Marialyce, that's sweet! I actually have a buddy on another group & we've been wanting to read it for some time, we're thinking this fall some time. Do you wanna join us?

My vote was with Moonstone too! But, yes, Laura, I would love to join in on your buddy read if it is ok with your other buddy.

Which group? I might be interested.
Yay, I'll check with her! I've never read anything Russian, but she read Crime & Punishment and loved it so I wanted to try The Brothers K with her because she hasn't read that one yet.

It's actually a private group, so I was thinking maybe we could discuss it on CoL somewhere? Does CoL have a spot for buddy reads?

That would be great! Thanks, Tera!
Well I hope everyone who voted for Gone With The Wind is going to read it, it wasn't my vote either.I think we will read the top 4 voted books. And then see if people want to read any of the others.
Very diplomatic solution, Meg. The only reason I'm not wild about Fall of Giants is because it isn't out yet. I assume that then it will be available only in hardback. These chunky reads don't fit well with library books because our reading time is usually longer than the library loan time, so I prefer to purchase them. I'd much prefer purchasing a paperback. If we wait for it to be available in paperback, I'll be first in line for it!
I'm not going to be the only one reading Gone With The Wind am I?! (I mean, it's winning the poll so far!) And am I leading this read & discussion? When does it start? How do the chunky reads work? (Guess I should have asked that first, lol!!!)
I will be reading along with you, Jo. I usually read 3 or 4 books at a time so I can keep up with lots of group reads. It is ever so nice to be retired!! :)

I didnt think of that Elizabeth but you're right about chunky books in hardback. Hmmm can I wait that long though? ;)

I'll reread it. I haven't read it for years but I used to read it every summer.

Fabulous! I can't wait to get started!
Tera, I've never read it before and you used to read it every summer?! (And I've never seen the movie either, go ahead, throw cyber rocks at me, LOL!)
Gosh, I guess I'm glad The Forsyte Saga didn't win if I was going to have to lead the discussion. I thought Meg led all the discussions on chunky reads.
Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Gosh, I guess I'm glad The Forsyte Saga didn't win if I was going to have to lead the discussion. Since Meg didn't vote for GWTW and I'm assuming doesn't want to read it, I don't mind leading the read & discussion on it if she doesn't want to. If she does, that's great with me too!
I was planning on reading Gone with the Wind this summer so I can hold off a bit and read it with you guys.
Isn't it funny how we all assume Meg will lead the chunky reads lol? Well, she always has, so...And Meg you do such a great job!
(((((((((((Meg))))))))))))
I think GWTW was a great choice, Jo, I know you'll love it.
That's good to know Laura! (About GWTW). I've no idea how the chunky reads work, lol! I didn't realize Meg has been leading them all! That's quite an accomplishment Meg! Both reading & leading discussions wise! Bravo! I'm open to what ever you decide on GWTW my friend!
Yeah, I've missed a few chunky reads but I think Meg has always led them. She's awesome at it though, I can't imagine reading a chunky without her.
I am listening to The Woman in White on audio. I am on disc 6 of 20. Someone in my historical fiction group is reading Gone With the Wind.
Ok thank you my wonderful chickies, I usually lead the discussion but if someone else wants to lead it I am more than willing. Jo do you want to lead it? I don't mind if you do!I will be rereading GWTW with y'all (like my drawl, I am getting ready) The book discussion will begin the first or second week in October. We usually give everyone a breather before starting the next chunky.
As for Fall of Giants. It is scheduled to come out on 9/28. If you preorder the book Amazon has it on sale for ~$19. Audio.com has it, if you are a member, for 1 credit(I think(. It hasn't been made into a kindle book yet. I am just too excited to wait too long. Watching Pillars right now has me pining for another Follet book.
I love getting suggestions from all of you.
And a big thank you to the other person who voted for M-D! I will have to reread it on my own unless someone wants to buddy with me.
Emily do not despair. I will put Moby Dick back on our list. I have always wanted to read that book. We can do it as a chunky. I am pretty open to a TBR list!
Emily, I would have voted for Moby Dick, had I not read it on my own last year. Same goes got GWTW. I read that on my own a year or so ago also.
I would also like to someday read The Brothers Karamazov, and would someday like to read Ulysses (which I nominated) too. In fact all the chunky read nominations were excellent choices!

It's just so amazing...I feel like I have to share it! It was the only "assigned reading" that I didn't actually read all the way through in High School, and I was always afraid of it. Then I had to read it for my class on epic (which reminds me...we should be adding the Iliad and the Odyssey and the Aeneid and the Divine Comedy to this chunky TBR list!) and I loved it. It's amazing. I need to write a paper on it and therefore, need to read it again.
Just remember, when we do a poll we can only vote on one book, that doesn't mean other books on the list were not books you wanted to read. The only restriction I am going to add for the next time is that the book needs to be at least 700-750 pages. I am a little concerned that one is only in the 500s, that is a short book for me!
Emily, I would love to read The Divine Comedy someday, as well as the others you mentioned. There are so many chunky classics out there. :o)
Emily, I'd like to read MD too! Meg, I don't mind leading GWTW, especially to give you a break and because I think that will help me stick with it & finish it! A 1st or 2nd week of Oct start is good for me too w/all I have going right now & gives me times to prepare & look over past chunky read threads.
I'm glad you & Emily will be reading GWTW too!
There might be others who would want to read Moby Dick. Tera has started a Buddy Reads folder - check it out!
I heard Moby Dick was an insomnia cure, so I've stayed away from it. Wait. I think I was supposed to read that one in English class too. I read lots of Cliff's notes in high school! Is that the "Call me Ishmael" book?Maybe I should re-think this?
OK We are definitely doing Moby Dick here. You are not allowed to read it without me. I made an executive decision!!!!!!
