Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Of those, I think Perfect Chemistry is the best, then Demonglass (WHY aren't more people reading this series?) but I love the Mortal Instruments series and you have to start with CoB (which is good but not the best in the series) to get to books 2 and 3 which are great. Linger is decent, but I like the other three books much better. Chosen...eh. It's alright/mediocre, but I'd put that at the bottom.

So yeah...Perfect Chemistry, Demonglass, CoB first! The others when you have time.

Isa, we read way too much when someone can put up a list of 5 and we can pick all 5 books apart.

Amanda I have City of Bones, I'm reading No Time to Die & The Deep End of Fear (Dark Secrets, #2) by Elizabeth Chandler , and then im going 2 read Oh. My. Gods. by Tera Lynn Childs , then City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1) by Cassandra Clare

@Stacia, lol! That's why I was having hard time answering the question...

@Amanda, I'd say it depends on what your in the mOod for:
*funny/snarky: Demon Glass.
*romantic/heavy/sad-ish: Linger
*good contemp YA/chick lit-y: Perfect Chem.
*but.. but for all around good reading: CoB!
I'd skip Chosen though and save it for when you want light mindless vamp fun :)

I've had both books in the Hex Hall series forever. It gets to me that I still haven't read them but I'm trying to finish the Mortal Instruments series first. So behind in my reading thanks to my book buying addiction. I need book rehab. But it's weird because the books get a lot of love but like you said, don't see more people reading them either.

message 7855: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 11, 2011 02:47PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I see a lot more people reading the Hex Hall books in 2 of my other groups, and neither one of those groups is a pnr group which is funny.

This is the pnr group and no one here seems to have read it except for a few of us. Crazy. I don't think they're 5 star reads like a lot of people seem to, but they are definitely solid 4's and a lot of fun.

message 7856: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 11, 2011 02:47PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh and same with White Cat/Red Glove (curseworkers). Love those books but more people have read them in my sci-fi groups than here (both my ya and adult sci-fi groups have picked White Cat as a monthly read). They're urban fantasy and fit more in a pnr group than sci-fi!

message 7857: by Jen (last edited Aug 11, 2011 04:33PM) (new)

Jen (jennifer_ashmy) | 245 comments Those are Holly Black books, right? I also find it weird to not see them more in PNR considering so many people consider Holly Black to be one of the most prominent authors in the paranormal genre - in some ways. I myself have not read them yet(but plan to).

Yea I've seen that too w/ Hex Hall. There is so much love for it in this one group where they all tend to love contemporary/realistic YA but not much love in the PNR groups.

I've read bits and pieces of Hex Hall and right off the bat, everything I have read is funny which is why I just went and bought them right away.

Yeah. I liked this series way better than I liked Tithe by her, which was just okay. Guys in gloves are sexy! Which is also why I love The Hourglass Door because I love the hot time-traveling Italian guy who wears gloves. Yum.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Chain Reaction trailer...kind of cheesy but I can't wait for the book. Alex has some hair on him haha and he pulls a gun at the end.

Book Sushi (BookSushi) | 97 comments i read the Hexhall series which is quite nice and light. it makes you laugh aswell.

The Mortal Instruments were good (the first 3), now I honestly think that the author is ruining the series (i know im going to get alot of flak from the TMI fans) but i really struggled with the last book. The plot seems to be dragging out soooo much Im actually in two minds whether i will actually continue with the next one.

message 7861: by Mel (new)

Mel The only thing I liked about CoFA was more Simon and the introduction of Jordan and how he fits in with the story other than that it was just okay for me.

Blood Red Road (Dustlands, #1) by Moira Young

hot time-traveling Italian guy who wears gloves? Okay, I'm sold already, haha. Also adding that one to my "to read" list.

Carina Queen of Song and Souls Queen of Song and Souls (Tairen Soul, #4) by C.L. Wilson
*grins* I'm 20 pages in and already hooked, God I love this series.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Yep yep. Wish more people would read it. One of the best stories and couples in epic fantasy I think. Can't go wrong with a really good love story and a really good fantasy book combined. Usually it's one or the other, not both.

I'm not counting YA epic fantasy right now because even a lot of the good ones don't really read like EF the way adult books do with all of the racial wars and magic systems.

OH YES! I want to talk to some people about the Hourglass Door series in this group! I have friends who have read and loved it in one of my other YA groups, but not this one.

Dante is so...indescribable. He is a true gentleman and yeah...the glove thing. He really heats up in one scene in the second book.

I hated Zo in the first book, but he is so damn rebellious and sexy in the second.

My only complaint is I'm not really liking the girl. She's too much like Luce/Nora, etc. I don't care though. Dante makes up for it and the story is different, more like a sci-fi and pnr combined.

message 7873: by Mel (new)

Mel Done with Royally Crushed (Royally Jacked; Spin Control; Do-Over) by Niki Burnham and won't be reading something new until Sweetly (Sisters Red, #2) by Jackson Pearce Bloodlines (Bloodlines, #1) by Richelle Mead arrive via kindle pre order on the 23rd:( so that leaves me to reread Nevermore (Nevermore, #1) by Kelly Creagh for the third time:)

You know, now that you mention it, I saw it at Walmart once and wanted to buy it but since I hadn't heard of it before and didn't know anybody who had read it yet - I postponed it until I got some more info on it.

I'll be looking out for it now. I like the sci-fi & pnr combo idea.

message 7876: by Courtney (new)

Courtney K (cklueh) I just finished two books I didn't care for: Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shultz and Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning . I was very surprised I didn't like Darkfever b/c everyone I know who has read LOVED it. I'm listening to Youth in Revolt by C.D. Payne , which is hilarious. I haven't seen the movie based on it, yet. I think the narrator is younger than in the movie. In the book, he is just turning 14. I'm waiting on Supernaturally to come in at the library as I'm on the list to get it first. Wouldn't it happen that way? The books always come in on time when I'm #25 on the list.

message 7877: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 13, 2011 06:00PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) No, that's not true. Hardly anyone loved Darkfever. It was just okay I think. It barely got 3 stars from me.

You have to read the series to understand how good it is. Book 2 starts getting better, book 3 is really good, book 4 is extremely incredible and brilliant, and book 5 is one of my favorite books of all time.

message 7878: by Amanda (new)

Well, now I don't know what to think. I really don't like when the main plot is left unfinished at the end. I prefer for the plot to be tied up, then the last chapter adds a new cliffhanger for the next book. I don't like to be blackmailed into reading more books in a series. That's just cheating!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) It's hard to find a series nowadays without cliffhangers. There are some here and there, but it's become rarer and rarer.

At least all of the books are published though. A lot of us had to wait a long time for book 5 and it was a rough wait because this series has a lot of mysteries that need to be solved. Although, that was half the fun because we got to engage in some crazy theory discussions about how it was going to end.

I think the author needed the first book to set up the complex world, not unlike how Richelle Mead has done with every single one of her series. Once you're fully immersed in it, the flow comes easier and you start engaging more with the characters.

There are some who loved the first book as much as the rest, but I see more that didn't. It's a very common thread in discussions for people to say that they didn't like the first book very much. Mac was shallow and hadn't grown up yet, the world wasn't making sense yet, etc. Each chain of events pushes her to become a stronger person and leave her old life behind.

I have the feeling that if I ever go back and read the series again, I'll love the first book the second time around because it will make more sense.

Anyway, if you don't want to read on you don't have to. I do know that just about everyone who has pushed on has ended up growing to love the series, even if they were unsure about it at first.

message 7881: by Carina (new)

Carina I completly agree with Stacia, Courtney.
Book 1 was just ok, but from there on...one of the best series I've ever read. I hope you do give it a try cause it really is amazing. I remember feeling like you when I read Darkfever, but I'm sooooo glad I pushed through it.

I haven't read her Shifters series, I just started The Reaper series, but didn't have enough room to put the rest of Rachel Vincent's from the series. Bummer. So I have to wait to see what happens..... Reaper (Soul Screamers, #3.5) by Rachel Vincent

So I worked on catching up with Linda Joy Singleton's The Seer Series. I was hooked by book 1 Don't Dry Dragonfly. Yesterday I just finished The Last Dance and it was AWESOME with such a cliff hanger of an ending. But alas, I have to clean up my Kindle with all it's notes so I can finsh both series. If haven't read a Linda Joy Singleton book you need to try it out.

Carina and Brit, you guys really need to read Vixen (Flappers, #1) by Jillian Larkin . Especially you Brit. It has a lot of the scandal like The Luxe had, but this book is a bit less sad so far...a little more fun...although there are old time gangsters and illegal underground clubs which is kind of different. The taboo interracial relationship is my favorite storyline so far.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Sigh. I still need to read past book 1 of that series. I say it every time that I know I'll like the books once I get to book 3 like everyone says, but I really didn't like the first one at all. It's been hard to motivate myself to move on.

You know, I just realized that One Grave at a Time (Night Huntress, #6) by Jeaniene Frost comes out at the end of the month and I'm not really caring one way or the other. This is the first book in the series I'm not excited to get to after the last one was decent but not as good as the others.

I'm way more excited for Succubus Revealed (Georgina Kincaid, #6) by Richelle Mead - like serious fangirl squealing excited. I haven't been this excited for a book since Shadowfever.

Isa, you gonna read this one when it comes out?

I really like that series

and the Heir series The Warrior Heir (The Heir Chronicles, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima The Wizard Heir (The Heir Chronicles, #2) by Cinda Williams Chima and The Dragon Heir (The Heir Chronicles, #3) by Cinda Williams Chima

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'm only a few chapters in, but I'm liking it so far. Which of her two series is better, or are they comparable?

message 7900: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked the Demon King series more, but its still to early to tell because there are only 2 books out so far. This one had a little bit more depth to the story line.
