YA Paranormal and Fantasy Book lovers discussion
Book talk

What are you reading now?
Preach!Seriously, the book is very good. I know Carina would love it, and maybe even Britnee too. And I have it to share *dangles the carrot*.
I just got messaged so had to respond back, and that's why I haven't logged off yet. This always happens right as I'm trying to go. Without fail.
It's in my individual book folder. You should know where to find it.Where you been tonight hooker? I'm about to leave for real now. I miss your and Jess's ramblings...
@ Stacia:Oh I see. It's good to know. Because I definitely have been excited to read this series for a while now.
haha, I think I know which group your talking about. Actually because they love Hex Hall so much is that I decided to buy the first book. Oh and them avoiding PNR like the plague is so true, whats up with that? i thought I was the only who noticed, lol. Which is why I never understood why so many people over there loved these books and that barely anyone mentioned it here.
I think the reason why the main posters in the group don't read a lot of YA PNR is because they feel it to be far too angsty for their tastes. I understand to a point about some of the more popular reads (such as Twilight, Fallen, etc.), but am sort of sad that it's turned a portion of them off to PNR in general.Sometimes it almost does feel like if you're not reading the popular genres/flavors of the month, that you have no real place in the discussions. It's supposed to be a group for all YA, but they tend to favor realistic fiction for the most part. There's a little fantasy/dystopian, but not a lot.
That said...I'm sure people have felt that way about this group too. We have the same 10 or so regulars that post about the same series over and over, so I'm sure new people might feel out of the loop. I guess that's just what happens in most groups. Whichever people post the most do tend to direct the flow of what's going on. It's very hard though to try to keep up with what every casual poster is into, if they're only posting a comment here and there once or twice a week. The more a person posts, the more likely we are to start including their books into the discussion.
I don't post as much over in that group because I find myself less invested in what the core group over there is reading, but I have found a few friends in the group itself. Sometimes they'll talk about a book I do like (such as Hex Hall or Anna and the French Kiss, which I found out about in that group), or even get into adult PNR discussions (some of them will read adult PNR/UF, just not YA) and I'll join in. Otherwise I'll pop in, say hi and move on to the next group. Everyone has different tastes, and that group just doesn't completely match up with mine, which is fine. They're allowed to have their fun too.
I am reading Ancestors & Angels, but I am new to this, and cannot post the picture for some unknown reason !Ancestors and Angels
I see what your saying Stacia. It definitely makes a lot of sense. And yea its sad that many of them turn away from PNR thinking that all of its its too angsty or á la twilight. But it's like you said, it just depends on peoples taste, absolutely.I've always felt out the loop over there. Now I know why. I don't like realistic fiction that much. And yea even though they are a group for YA in general. There is no doubt that realistic fiction is their thing. I love my supernatural/paranormal/fantasy/pnr books, so I guess thats why I feel more comfy here. But since I love YA, i always check that group to see what books are trending and and no doubt my tbr list has grown from that, hehe.
Well as a semi newbie to this group. I don't know everyone yet. I don't know if you guys have become familiar with me yet, lol. But I have to say, in all honesty, I never felt too out of the loop here. Not even in the beginning of joining this group because you guys would warn us newbies to not be afraid to jump in your convos, haha. Which are always so hilarious btw and mostly about your book crushes (who doesn't love to talk about that?), lol.
I just finished
(OMG such a fun book, I was surprised with this one).On to finishing
&
because I am dying to start

Yes hes amazing! (:
Jen wrote: "Not even in the beginning of joining this group because you guys would warn us newbies to not be afraid to jump in your convos, haha..."Yeah, you have to jump in wherever there's an opening. Or even jump in when there's not an opening.
.....
Grats Britnee on your book. :) I'll be trying that one soon I think...maybe.
i want to wait till all the iron fey books are out and then i will read them one after another like i did with the Blue Bloods. Nothing better than having the full story and then just reading them all. :) Do any of you ever do that?
I've had a couple of series just happen to work out that way because they were already finished when I started them, but I won't let an unfinished series put me off from starting. It's actually a lot of fun to wait along with other friends for a book to come out because everyone gets excited to discuss it at the same time. Sometimes if you wait to read a series until after it's been out for a while, the buzz sort of dies down a bit and it's hard to find people to want to discuss it.
I would pay money to be able to go back in time and read The Luxe back when the series hadn't been finished. It would have been hysterical to see people freak out over how the series ended.
Mirna wrote: "I just finish

I even cry while standing in the shop reading the greeting cards. LOL!! So I'm probably going to be needing a box of tissues on the next book.
I've just started
Catching Fire was sooooo good!

I just bought HUNGERGAMES and have in hold CATCHINGFIRE, but still don't know when I'm gonna start reading them..
Everyone seems to congregate here so I hope you don't mind if I ask a writerly question/pick your brains etc. What is your opinion of the whole love triangle thing that seems to be synonomous with YA books?
I am reading The Iron Fey series right now and although I am enjoying the plot, the whole Puck v Ash thing is exactly the same as Edward v Jacob and Keenan v the other guy in Wicked Lovely and probably numerous others I haven't even got to. That whole gorgeous, dangerous, almost unattainable guy that the protag falls head over heels in love with versus the "friend" that doesn't have a chance of making it to 1st base let alone anything else.
Do you still really enjoy reading this? or do you ever get bored with it?
As an adult I find it a little cliched but I write for YA's so am I screwing up by purposely not putting a love triangle in my books?
I'm about ready to start on my next story and this is a big question I have lurking in the back of my mind.
You guys have been really honest with me in the past and I'd really appreciate your thoughts. Again, hope you don't mind me asking in this thread and tapping into your collective psyche.
Thanks :-)
@ Alison: That is a tricky question. Well as an adult myself (I'm 24 & I love YA). I personally don't mind reading about love triangles in YA I guess because most of the YA books that I've been reading lately, have them. Now does the formula for the love triangles in YA get annoying sometimes? yea it does. For once I would love the girl to go for the best friend and not the hot and mysterious guy. But I might be on my own here because I like the good guys. I do love bad boys but not for the reason most people do - I mostly think bad boys tend to have hilarious dialogue especially because a lot of them are very sarcastic. But yea, one of the last books I read I loved because for once the heroine didn't go for the mysterious hot guy and went for the guy she had known her whole life and it was really refreshing because not only did she eventually go for him, he was not annoying, which for some reason tends to happen in a lot of YA books with the best guy friend in the love triangle. This particular best friend had a personality and had his own 'je ne se quoi' without coming off as douchy.
Anywhoo, before I get off track here and bore you to death, lol. I don't feel like you will screw up your YA book if you don't put a love triangle in it. For example: The Harry Potter books are amazing and those books are not driven by love triangles. I mean you have some romances but they don't drive the plot. Ultimately what I feel is important is that you write what feels good to you and that you create fantastic and well fleshed out characters that readers con root for. What else is important? having a story that is original and different. If you were to write a love triangle in your book and you are really not feeling it, I think it would become evident because most likely that particular love triangle would come across as disingenuous and cliche to the reader. Why? because you don't want to write a love triangle in the first place. Those are my 2 cents (Sorry if this came out too long).
Thanks, Jen. That was a very thoughtful response, and much appreciated.Good point about Harry Potter too. That series is amazing and no love triangles there.
Sometimes it's tricky when you're an author and you really want to build a readership. Do you get on the bandwagon with what's tried and tested? Or do you write what you want to write and hope people like it?
You certainly gave me lots to think about :-)
I agree with Jen. I want someone to write something different(Or maybe I just haven't come across it yet), but why does the girl never end up with the friend guy?? Aaaand, love triangles DO get overwelming sometimes. You dont really need one to like the book (Hush Hush). But if you play it right, they can be very entertaining.Jen, would you tell me the name of the book you mentioned please?
@ Carina: oh for sure. The book I mentioned was
. Boy was I surprised because the last thing I expected from the title of this book was a well done romance that wasn't too over the top/dramatic.

Because lol. I'm Team Graves. Hes sexy.
Yessss it was so good I gave it a 4 though. I want the next one now D;
I need to make some time to continue this series, but I have to special order them cause they dont have them at the store =/
Carina wrote: "I agree with Jen. I want someone to write something different(Or maybe I just haven't come across it yet), but why does the girl never end up with the friend guy?? Aaaand, love triangles DO get ove..."Thanks, Carina. I'm glad it's not just me. I think I'll just stick with writing from my heart. It'll get me there one day :-). I have to say one thing I'm very conscious of when I write are the teenagers in my community. I'm a very strong member of my community and a lot of kids look up to me. Most of them read my book/s, so I try and make sure my writing is fun but doesn't step over that line (you know the one;-) especially in a very Christian town.) I think a passionate kiss will probably be as far as I ever go.
Anywho - as Jen would say :-)
I just finished
and I'm starting
. Mirna said this one made her cry, so being the emotional fish that I am, box of tissues at the ready :-)
@Alisson... the box of tissues is only need it at the very end, like the last 50 pages..... and ill say ASH all the way... lol
Mirna wrote: "@Alisson... the box of tissues is only need it at the very end, like the last 50 pages..... and ill say ASH all the way... lol"NO. He has nothing on Puck!
