Dustin Hi, Susanna!
There ARE a lot of DT connections, aren't there? I love it.

message 802: by Susanna (last edited Feb 26, 2011 02:08AM) (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Hey, Dustin! Yeah, I probably miss most of them for not having read the series but in Insomnia there are a lot of obvious ones. I also immediately wanted to know how Patrick is linked to DT.

Absolutely! I finished the book today and its actually my 1st Stephen King book. It will be my favorite too.

Dustin Oh, Divya, that is AWESOME! Welcome to the Stephen King Universe! You're one of us now.

Susanna- I hope you plan on reading DT soon!

Happy reading!

message 805: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Dustin, can you mark that as a spoiler please? Some people like to find out things like that when they get there. Thanks!

message 806: by Dustin (last edited Feb 26, 2011 11:43AM) (new)

Dustin Oh...I'm sorry about that, Becky...

BTW, how would I mark something as a spoiler?

message 807: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You can either do < spoiler > text < /spoiler > without the spaces which will give you this: (view spoiler) or just *********Spoiler******** it. ;)

message 808: by Dustin (last edited Feb 26, 2011 12:17PM) (new)

Dustin Thank you, Becky!

With that name, she certainly should.

message 810: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Oh, definitely! I didn't even think of that!

message 811: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Quite close, isn't it? I do plan on reading the series soon. I have all seven just waiting on my shelf to be picked up and read. Hard covers just waiting to be cracked for the first time. <3

message 812: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Oh, that is SWEET, Susanna! I wish I owned all of them on hardcover!

message 813: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments I finished Owen's book, my review's up here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... I liked it, it was good, I'd recommend to any of y'all who are curious. :)
I'll be reading Mystic River by Dennis Lehane next, mostly because I happened to see the movie last night, and now I need to read the book. Have to do it, need to know more...

message 814: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Hi, Kit!

Mystic River's a great film, wouldn't you say? I plan on reading the book, as well.

message 815: by Scott (new)

Scott | 401 comments I am currently reading Carved in Bone.

Yes it is, I'm going to watch it again when I finish the book, maybe see it in a new light :)

message 817: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Cool!

message 818: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments I understand that movies can be more accessible to a person than books, but I cannot tell you how much better a book "Mystic River" is than it is a movie - and it's a tremendous movie -- but the medium of film cannot and never will be able to fit in all the little shadowings and workings that an author agonizes over.

message 819: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I actually didn't care for Mystic River (the book) as much as I had hoped to. I listened to the audio, and the audio reader didn't do anything for me. He actually took away from my enjoyment of the book. =\

Stick to the actual book - the story is good if you can identify with the characters. :)

message 820: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments The thing is, I'd been a huge fan of Lehane's long before "Mystic River" was even written, so I was definitely predisposed to like the book itself.

message 821: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) That would certainly help, Bondama. I've never seen any of the movies based on Lehane's books, so I can't compare them. I've only ever read Shutter Island and Mystic River, and of the two, I most definitely preferred Shutter Island. I was looking forward to Mystic River, but that damn reader just kept me at arm's length... It's a shame, because the story really IS good, I just didn't enjoy it like I wanted to.

message 822: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 219 comments What about Gone Baby Gone?

message 823: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) What about it? Are you asking if I've seen it, Kevin? If so, the answer is no. I haven't seen any movies based on Lehane's books.

message 824: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments I own both Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River, still need to read both. Loved the book Shutter Island, movie not so much.

message 825: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Gone Baby Gone is the 4th book in the Kenzie and Gennaro series. I would have to read the others first, even if they are independent stories that just have the same main characters linking each book. I can't read series books out of order... it makes me crazy! :P

message 826: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 219 comments Becky wrote: "What about it? Are you asking if I've seen it, Kevin? If so, the answer is no. I haven't seen any movies based on Lehane's books."

No, I have not seen or read any of his work, even though I own Mystic River in paperback.

message 827: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 561 comments I have read Gone Baby Gone, Prayers For Rain and Moonlight Mile in the Kenzie/Gennaro series and Mystic River and Shutter island as stand-alones. With the exception of Mile, all were great books. Mile was just ok.

message 828: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (barbarajov) | 8 comments Finally finished Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King early this am. Still processing how I liked it. Will do a review later. Starting We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson today.

message 829: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Hi, Barbara!
I recently finished Full Dark, No Stars, too!!

message 830: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments Dustin, what did you think??

message 831: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (barbarajov) | 8 comments Hi Dustin! Full Dark was good to me...not great...but as a fan, there were definitely points that were beautifully crafted to me. How about for you?

Here’s my review.

message 832: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Becky, I am exactly the same way about books in a series - I think I mentioned to you at one time that it got so bad at one time, I wouldn't even START the first one until I had all of the books in my possession!

message 833: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I used to be like that, Bondama... I'm not so much like that anymore. I used to have to read them all back to back as well, but now I can read other books in between. :)

message 834: by Scott (new)

Hello again, Barbara!

* * * POSSIBLE SPOILER * * *
I really enjoyed your review of FDNS, especially (in A Good Marriage) where you mentioned your lingerinq questions about Darcy's decision. I hadn't really viewed the novella from that precise angle before.

In 1922, the noted supernatural element is probably my favorite overall scene..

message 836: by Huma (new)

Huma (jadedgoth) | 1 comments I'm reading multiple books, actually:
Stephen King's Black House (The Talisman's my favorite book ever so I just HAD to read the sequel)
Edgar Allan Poe's Unabridged Collection
Stephanie Meyer's Twilight (I've been on Book 1 for the past 16 months)
Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire
Kaen Moning's Highlander
I agree that they're all disconnected, comparatively-irrelevant, and completely different books - but it's fun that way!

message 837: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 219 comments Reading Dragons of Eden right now, but can't wait to dive into the Collected Stories of Drizzt on Thursday, a big fan always wanting to read the black stories/short stories, going to be a treat for me.

message 838: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (barbarajov) | 8 comments Dustin wrote: "In 1922, the noted supernatural element is probably my favorite overall scene..."

Thanks Dustin. Maybe I will go back and reread 1922 again because I did love it up until that twist point. The dread and creep were there for sure.

message 839: by Dustin (new)

Dustin You're welcome, Barbara!

* * * SPOILER * * *
I just think it's an interesting way of knowing the whereabouts/situation involving Hank and Shannon. Seeing through Arlette's eyes is fascinating. And plus, I love supernatural stories!

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Scott wrote: "I just started Ender's Game on the way home."

Awesome, awesome book!! One of my all time faves, I wanted to use Ender for my kid's middle name, but we ended up using Jake instead. Tough choice there, both are my fave kid characters ever.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Bondama wrote: "I understand that movies can be more accessible to a person than books, but I cannot tell you how much better a book "Mystic River" is than it is a movie - and it's a tremendous movie -- but the me..."

I completely agree, the books are always better than the movies, even when the movies are done extremely well. I also have The Given Day to read by Lehane, I really liked reading Shutter Island, and I'd love to find more of his work one of these days.

message 842: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Kit, he has a series (mentioned above) about two detectives, Patrick & Gina, written before "Mystic River" - The first couple are a bit weak, but they get very much better as they go along, although they never reach the heights of "Mystic River" or "Any Given Day" - which is my big-time, all time favorite of his.

message 843: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Cool, so it looks like I picked the good ones to start with :D I really like his writing, I just get right into it as soon as I open the page and start.

message 844: by Scott (new)

Scott | 401 comments I'm going to start Coraline. My son is reading it so I figured that I might as well read it also.

message 845: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments You'll love it, Scott - Gaiman is so beautifully twisted!

message 846: by David (new)

David jones | 166 comments I am reading On writing right now. After I finish i will read carrie

message 847: by Billy (new)

Billy (lordbdub) | 15 comments Kit, Lehane is the MAN when it comes to modern crime/dram genre. His Kenzie/Genarro series is VERY good. I have to completely disagree Bondama. A Drink Before the War is an AMAZING first novel for any writer of any genre ( it won the Shamus Award), Darkness Take My Hand (the second novel) is just as good as the first. While I do agree that Mystic River is a GREAT book, I would say that Gone Baby Gone is just as good, in my opinion. Moonlight Mile, the sequel to Gone Baby Gone, is a very good book as well. I would say out of the entire series there is really only one weak book and that is Sacred, and even that is a good read.

message 848: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments In one respect you are quite, correct Billy -- It wasn't really accurate to "dismiss" Lehane's Kenzie/Gennaro novels as I did --- I was actually thinking of "Sacred" to be honest.. It's just that "Mystic River" and "Any Given Day" rise so far above the level of his earlier work, it blew me away.

Did you ever get a chance to see any of the episodes of "The Wire" that he or Pellecanos wrote?

message 849: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Yesterday I read the introduction to Just After Sunset . I'll probably divide my reading between Uncle Stephen and Under Fire: A Century Of War Movies .

message 850: by Scott (new)

Scott | 401 comments I'm going to start The Running Man on the way home.
