Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments She laughed. "Calm down. And don't use the slang so freely like that. It annoys me. Anyway, we'll start with breakfast."

message 102: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Got it." Bridget said being uncharacteristically silent.

message 103: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Paizlie smiled to herself and lead the two over to the Honestead, where she slid a plate of eggs and bacon in front of each of them.

message 104: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bridget ate as quickly as possible, so she could learn what was going on here.

message 105: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments "Listen up. We're starting with the rules." Paizlie sat on a table directly opposite from them and brought her knee up. "Are you listening?"

message 106: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Ya I'm listening." Bridget said having just wolfed down the last of her food.

"Uh hu." Bryant said shaking his head.

message 107: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments "Rule number one. You don't step foot in the maze. Ever. Unless you're a Runner. Rule number two. If you don't follow rule number one, you will be executed. We can't have bloody shanks running around being idiots. Got it?"

message 108: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Got it. Anything else?" Bridget asked.

message 109: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments "Yes. But we'll save those for later. You two are going to start with some jobs around here. Any preferences?"

message 110: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Well I'd rather not do something life threatening." Bridget said sarcastically.

"Whatever." Bryant said not really caring.

message 111: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments "Good. Congratulations, I hope you like slaughtering. You're going to try being a slicer."
She grinned, somewhat cruelly and handed them some blood stained aprons.

message 112: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Umm... Can I change my preference? I choose something other than the slaughter house!" Bridget said.

message 113: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments "Sorry, kids. All greenies start with that job. Don't worry, we're just testing out some things. After being a slicer, you'll try out be a bagger, then a Track-hoe. Then builders, med-jacks, and Map-makers. It's all fun stuff. And if you are unsuccessful at all of those jobs. You'll be a slopper. That was my friend Frank's job." Paizlie replied.

message 114: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Okay.. I don't know what half of those things are." Bridget said. She could figure out builder and map maker, but the others she had no clue.

Bryant just stood still.

message 115: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments "Eh. It's all confusing. Now get going to The Slaughter House." Paizlie stood, pointing them in the right direction.

((Gahh....I love Newt's character so much.))

message 116: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments (( LOLZ ))

Bridget walked over to the slaughter house. Before she was even with in ten feet of it she could smell it. It smelled horrible, disgusting, and she did not want to go in there.

Bryant was shocked by the smell but quickly ignored it and kept walking.

message 117: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Paizlie was quietly laughing when Emmett came up behind her, tazering her in her stomach sides. She jumped and turned to scold the person who did it, but ended up smiling at Emmett. "You klunkhead." She said, laughing.
"I know. But I'm better."
"I can tell." She said, grinning.
Emmett nodded toward the greenbeans. "Two of them?"
"Yeah. It was the oddest thing. But I can't tell them that they're special or anything."
Emmett frowned. "Right."

message 118: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bridget found her self cutting off multiple animals heads over the next couple hours and puking up all of her breakfast. This was obviously no the job for her.

Bryant felt bad for Bridget. This was her fourth time running outside to puke. He wasn't liking this job mush either but at least he was managing to keep his breakfast down.

message 119: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Emmett was sitting next to Paizlie, staring at the Bridget running outside again. "Yeah, she not going to be a slicer."
Paizlie grimaced. "I can tell. Should I go get them?"
"Nah, I will. You eat breakfast." Emmett replied, hopping off the bench.
She smiled. "Thanks. I'll see you later then."

message 120: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments (( I gtg I'll be back in about an hour ))

message 121: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments ((Okay.))

message 122: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments (( Sorry that was two hours. I'm back! ))

Bridget saw one of the boys that had been in the room when Paizlie had chased them out coming toward her. She had just puked for the fourth time today and was starving.

message 123: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bridget walked around the back of the building where no one could see her. She pulled a locket out from under her shirt. Inside was a picture of two little kids. One a boy and one a girl. They both had red hair and green eyes. She could tell the boy was Bryant and guessed that the girl was her. How did we know each other? Why can't I remember him? These questions kept running through her mind as she put the locket back under her shirt.

message 124: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bryant noticed that Bridget had been gone a while and told the keeper he was going to find her. He ran outside and shouted her name.

"I'm back here." Bridget shouted when she heard Bryant's voice.

Bryant walked behind the building and found Bridget slumped against the wall and shaking. "What's wrong?" He asked kneeling beside her.

Bridget knew she would start crying if she talked again so instead she pulled the locket out of her shirt and showed it to him.

Bryant looked at the picture in the locket. He recognized Bridget immediately it's hard to miss her even if the picture was taken years ago. It took him a minute however to realize the boy was him. "Is that us?" He asked his voice sort of wobbly.

Bridget just nodded.

message 125: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Emmett frowned and turned back to Paizlie with a 'I'm-not-sure' look.
Paizlie nodded and turned to a nearby slopper. "The new greenbeans need some food. Go bug Frypan."
The kid nodded and went off to the kitchen.

message 126: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bryant was the first to snap out of it "Well we should probably go back to slicing."

Bridget had stood up and started walking around the building still not trusting herself to use words.

message 127: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Frank stopped them on their way back. "Hey. You guys are off the job for the blood house today. I nabbed some 'andwiches for you two in the kitchen. An early lunch."

message 128: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Thanks!" Bridget said taking a sandwich. She was relieved to not have to go back there, and to have food in her stomach.

Bryant took a sandwich and bit in. It was so good.

message 129: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Frank stood there awkwardly for a few moments, afterall, he was quite an awkward kid. "Oh, and I'm sure Paizlie will want to see you after this."
He smiled and jokingly saluted as he walked away.

message 130: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bridget finished up her sandwich and looked over at Bryant "You ready?"

"Yup, let's go." Bryant said walking off towards Paizlie.

message 131: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Emmett and Paizlie had been quietly talking to themselves. She turned her head, blonde hair flying to the side and sharpened her eyes to watch the approaching two. She smiled kindly and waved. Emmett laughed, adding a snort in there.
"You're being nice to the greenies?"
"I thought it would be a good change."
Emmett eyed her over before nodding his head like 'yeah right.'
Paizlie jokingly punched him in the shoulder. Normally he would've been a complete drama queen. But this wasn't the same. He grabbed her hand that she had punched him with, a cold and steely expression painted on his face. "Don't. Hit me."
Paizlie blinked in shock a few times and backed away. He tried to smile. "Eh, sorry, Paiz. I just don't like it when...." Emmett spoke, trailing off.
She couldn't even look at him. This was what she had feared. He had gone through The Changing. And she couldn't do anything about it.

message 132: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Hey Paizlie! Frank said you wanted to see us!" Bridget said as they reached Emmet and Paizlie.

Bryant was silent. As per his usual.

message 133: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments "Yeah, yeah. How'd you two like being slicers?" Paizlie asked, raising an eyebrow at the end of the question.

message 134: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Let's just say I don't think it was for me." Bridget said recalling the four times she ran out of their puking up her breakfast.

"Ya not really for me either." Not only had Bryant hated slicing but it was obvious Bridget wouldn't be able to take on that job.

message 135: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Paizlie cracked a smile as she looked down at her knees. "Okay, we'll do track-hoes next. You shanks have to get down in the dirt. I'aight?" Paizlie asked, her strange accent from who-knows-where kicking in.

message 136: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Dirt works for me. Just no more chopping chickens heads off." Bridget said "One question though, What is a track-hoe?"

Bryant stayed silent waiting for Paizlie to answer Bridget's question.

message 137: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments "Pulling weeds in the hot sun, tending to plants, all that fun stuff. The keeper to that is Stan."

((I'm totally making these names up as I go. ;) ))

message 138: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments (( Nice!! I gtg soon ))

"Sounds good. Where do we go?" Bridget said.

message 139: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments She pointed with two arms in the direction where Stan was over there waving. "Head that way."
Suddenly, a boy covered in dirt and sweat emerged from the maze and ran over to Emmett. "Seth's been stung!!" The boy screamed this statement repeatedly.
Emmett grabbed the boys shoulders to calm him down. "Where his Seth now?"
The boy whimpered. "It took him."
Paizlie shot a worried look at the two.
"The Griever took him."

message 140: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "I'm guessing we should go now." Bridget said walking toward Stan but still looking at the boy that just came from the maze.

Bryant followed Bridget.

message 141: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments (( I gtg!! ))

message 142: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Paizlie and Emmett tried to calm the boy in hysterics down while the two greenbeans headed off.

message 143: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bridget reached Stan "Hi we are the 'greenies', what do you want us to do?"

Bryant waited for Stan to answer.

message 144: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments ((I guess I'll be Stan.))

Stan was a kind enough fellow. Very muscular. He looked the greenies over. "Eh, acoupla new shanks? Paiz sent ya? Good. Now, the ground by the Homstead needs some aweeding. Got it?" He pointed to the weeds which were crawling out of the ground and looked quite pointy and threatening.

message 145: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments "Do you have any garden gloves or something like that? You know to protect us?" Bridget asked eyeballing the weeds. She didn't really like pointy objects.

message 146: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments Stan nodded. "Yeah."
He then proceeded to unclip two pairs of gloves off his belt. "Now geta crackin'."

message 147: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bridget took the gloves and went over to start pulling weeds.

Bryant did the same.

"So did that picture spark any memories for you?" Bridget asked.

"No." Bryant answered.

"Aw, I was hoping you would see it and remember everything and tell me and then I would remember everything." Bridget said pulling out one of the big weeds.

message 148: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments As the hour went on, it begin to get dark. Paizlie was wandering over by the deadheads. Alone.
A recent memorial slab of wood was perched up for Seth and she looked at it sadly. She was just as terrified as everybody else. But she needed to be strong. An example. A leader.
A long sigh escaped her lips and she began to pick at a wild flower.

message 149: by ɐlʎʞ (new)

ɐlʎʞ | 220 comments Bridget looked at the big pile of weeds that she had picked. Bryant and her hadn't talked anymore since that brief exchange at the beginning. "So you thinking about making this your job?" She asked.

"Not really. My back is killing ma and we have only been at it for about an hour." Bryant answered standing up to stretch out his back.

message 150: by Ember (new)

Ember (embersmith) | 201 comments The Glade was in frantics.
News was going around about the newest Runner who was stolen by a bloody Griever. Some of the runners were freaking out, not wanting to go in the maze.
Emmett had found Paizlie and they spoke quietly.
"We're short 3 runners." Emmett sighed.
"I know. I don't know what to do...."
Emmett took her chin gently and made her look at him. "Look, Paiz, those greenbeans. There's something special about them. Maybe they could fill in."
She sighed. "That would never work. I'm not even sure they can do it. And either way, that leaves one open spot."
Emmett's blue eyes lit up. "You do it."
"Wha--?"
"Paiz, you've always had the strength. You can do it."
She stood, brushing her pants. "Fine. If I die, it's on your head. I'll go find the shucking greenies."
He grinned that 'Emmett grin' and nodded.
