Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Most of the book I regret reading were assigned to me in school.

The ones which are prominent in my mind are:
Moby-Dick
Silas Marner

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I just thought that I don't usually finish a book that I'm not enjoying or feel is a waste of time although I am going to think more about this and look through some lists to see if I can come up with some other titles.

I haven't read that one, but a narrator can definitely help make or break a book. I tried to listen to one book that had a guy with a fairly deep and sexy voice try to do a woman's voice and had to stop listening because I would start laughing uncontrollably when he did the voice.

It's too bad that no one caught the discrepancies with the philosophers. You've got me wondering how bad it is. Was it rated high? Isn't that one that GR was advertising?

lol I have read quite a few books with similar situations where society digresses back to an archaic form of dress or way of living and while I can't fathom it happening, I think it boils down to either two things, either the author always fantasized about the time or dress or just thought it would make for a fun twist. Did you ever see the Science Fiction series Sliders? They would hop into other dimensions of our world with the events all being slightly off kilter either with when events happened or the outcome of those events. I can understand how someone might not "buy" into it, but it seems to be gaining popularity.

I've never had a problem with points of view, but a friend of mine simple hates books written in, I believe, first person. Did you dislike this one due to the character, or do you tend to dislike that POV?

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ (heyitsthemj) Twilight, Fifty Shades, Matched, and The Selection.

penneminreads My roomie once gave me a Joy Fielding book. I hated every page of it.

message 207: by Kay (Brigidsmomma) (last edited Mar 23, 2015 11:55AM) (new)

Kay (Brigidsmomma) Compton (brigidsmomma) Books I really wished I'd never read: Skyvalley Murderous Coffee Crumb Cozy Mystery Box Set (Sky Valley Cozy Mystery Series) by William Jarvis Got them as a kindle ebook, and the writing was atrocious. Spent good money (ok, only a couple of dollars, but still...) and the author never had the bloody things proofread! Needed a LOT of work, just to get thru the grammatical errors, and like a dummy, I kept hoping it would get better... sigh... what I get for being an optimist...

Also, one of the earliest never wish I'd read: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë Hated it. Read it in Jr High for a history class... gaaack. Supposed to be classic literature? Please. There are so many much better things to read out there!

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ (heyitsthemj) It's a shame you didn't like Jane Eyre. It's one of my favourites. Then again, I don't think the classics should be read for school assignments. Teachers ruin them instead of letting them be enjoyed.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ (heyitsthemj) I will also add all of the Laurel K. Hamilton Anita Blake books.

Thank you, ladies, for echoing my thoughts.

No disrespect to the fans of these books, of course.

message 212: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I'm sorry to all of you Shakespeare fans, but I wish I didn't have to read those books in school. The language was so confusing and annoying, it made my brain hurt. I suggest you just watch the American editions on the movies.

message 213: by Anna (new)

Anna | 43 comments Well one of the worst books I have ever read is Shiver... I don't even know where to begin but it was way to predictable and I just hated how the main girl was to obsessed with her wolf than to actually care about her friends or family... Another Twilight book, but I actually enjoyed twilight more than this one...

message 215: by NayNay (new)

NayNay Hated Fifty Shades of Grey the worst book ever, what are readers thinking. Did you know she bit her lip over 300 times in the book and the book is only 350 some pages.....UGH VERY BAD WRITING,

Also The Lovely Bones very boring.

And recently The Light Between Oceans I don't even know where to start....so I will just say I did not like it.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments Anna I wasn't a big fan of Shiver either. I was too annoying and I can't even see myself continuing the rest of the series.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments @ Lisa Marie my son watched the show and he really enjoyed it now I'm curious if he will like the book since his girlfriend bought it for him. I'm not sure if I should worn him or just let him find out on his own but he's not going to read it any time soon. He's had the book for months no and I don't think he will ever read it anyway.

message 219: by L. Mary (new)

L. Mary Swigart (lmary) My most recent regrets...

The Gathering by Anne Enright. I'm still not sure how I allowed myself to finish this book. What a miserable, whiny, unlikeable, unreleteable lead...

I never did finish Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut, but I am so glad it wasn't my first Vonnegut or it would have also been my last.

message 220: by Nicolette (new)

Nicolette | 11 comments I really did not like Forever or is it Shiver..whichever is the first in the series. I cant even remember it! I had to force myself through it and never shall I do that again

message 222: by Charon (last edited Jul 26, 2015 10:44AM) (new)

Charon Lloyd-Roberts (charonlrdraws) Delirium by Lauren Oliver, Vicious by V E Schwab, the Twilight books (I read the first three), Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan.

But yeah Delirium and Vicious turned out to be major disappointments and I think people overhype those books way too much.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ (heyitsthemj) Daughter of Deep Silence, Dead to Me, Enclave, Prodigy, Zone One...there's a handful of other books I DNF and I blame them for putting me in my three month-ish reading slump.

message 224: by Izabela (new)

Izabela Tomé (belatom) | 2 comments The Hollow by Agatha Christie. Simply the worst book ever. I don't know what happened, her books usually are so full of mystery and so well written... She just lost herself in this one.

I didn't like Red Rising until about 90ish pages in or something like that and then it picked up. Pretty much when he was being changed into the super human.

Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth

Worst possible ending. I wasn't a huge fan of the series but it was disappointing."

This book made me laugh way too hard at inappropriate places. The only good thing about it was what's her face's death. I gave Veronica props for that.

message 228: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 19 comments The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker. The prose was sappy and overblown and there were way too many plot holes. And it was long! The only reason I finished it was that it was my book club's pick. The worst part? I'm the one who picked it!

It's definitely over-hyped. I had struggles in the beginning with the second book as well, but then once all the fighting started, it got really good. He's much better at action and reaction scenes then build up.

message 230: by Justin (new)

Justin (rockstarintraining) This may get me kicked out of the group, but I wish I never read The Martian. That's precious reading time I'll never get back.

I have no want, need, or desire to read that book. I'm also passing on the movie.

It starts to pick up at the beginning of the training and then takes off once the kids are dropped off in the middle of nowhere and have to fend for themselves. Everything else before that could have been condensed.

I almost quit around then as well and a GR friend convinced me to give it to 100 pages, I did, and then couldn't put it down until I finished it. For a Sci-Fi debut novel, Brown wasn't as bad as some others I've read. He just needs to stop letting the beginning of his books be so heavy handed, he hasn't learned to balance story and action yet.

Carrie's books are awful. I tried reading Daughter of Deep Silence and quit.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ (heyitsthemj) Kisses A wrote: "I don't like anything about her books.TFOHAT had a good story and great potential but it was horrible."

Same with Daughters. It's about a girl who takes the place of one who lost her life on a cruise ship. The original girls best friend "figured" it out, with no actual possible way, other then the imposter tied her towel a different way, oh, and she could eat blackberries (that she didn't know she was eating) without sneezing.

At that point, I was done. I was already ready for the MC to die before that, but that "revelation" just...newp.

This made me LOL. I remember reading Silas Marner back in the 80's for school. My 85yo Grandfather asked what I was reading so I showed him. He turned up his nose and said, "I had to read that crap when I was in school." Couldn't have agreed more.

2 HATED books that stick out in my mind were:
House of Sand and Fog, Grey, and have to agree with whole House of Night comments earlier in the thread.

message 241: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy (dbell1) I've read and loved almost all of this series, but this book was such a character assassination and totally lost the plot several times. The Long Way Home (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #10) by Louise Penny dreadful.

Bob | 4 comments Well I actually liked Silas Marner. The book i hate the most is "Who moved my cheese". It felt good initially but after much chasing and running, when i finally found the cheese, i realised it was rotten.
