Sashana Elise, I’m going to re-read City of Bones tomorrow. I want to give it another try but I found the leading character (I forgot her name) to be a bit naive. It was so obvious that her best friend was in love with her. I love reading about strong leading women and she just didn’t seem like that to me. Then again, I stopped reading the book in the middle so I might be wrong. I’ll let you know what my thoughts are when I finish re-reading it though.

Samantha | 106 comments Well, I had City of Bones, too and I cant read it I dont know why but I just cant. I think I'm a bit prejudice about City of Bones. But my bestfriend just finished it and she really liked it so I'll start to read it. And I dont know anything about it:) I dont know it's theme:) but everybody told me that it's really great:) Oh, but I dont like weak women characters! I hope it isnt come true:/

message 53: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Samantha, we'll read it together :) Hopefully my opinion will change once I read it a second time.

message 54: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 106 comments lol! :) ok then when will we gonna start?

message 55: by Sashana (new)

Sashana As soon as you want to. My friend is going to lend me her copy tomorrow.

message 56: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 106 comments Mmmm.. so we can start it the day after tomorrow cause I'll go hospital tomorrow so I can guess that I'll have a headache full of day:( of course it's ok for you, too:)

message 57: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Okay we'll start it on Friday then :). Why are you going to the hospital (if you don't mind me asking)?

message 58: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 106 comments OK!!!! yayyyy:) friday night... anyway:) oh I'll go because I've rash and heat wont go well for me cause it's 40 centigrade at 12.00 so I cant go outside so I'm bored! Fortunately, I can go to sea everyday cause we live in seaside:)

message 59: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Sorry about your rash. My brother used to get them in the heat a lot but he hasn’t had on in years. You lucky girl! It must be very nice to live by the sea- very relaxing.

message 60: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 106 comments lol:) yeah and I like to write stories so I go to balcony and watch sea. it is relaxing me so I can write:) Hmmm I wanna get rid of my rash but it is impossible because of the heat!

message 61: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Sashana, Did you only read the City of Bones or the 2 other books as well?

Avigail, Just curious if seemed outdated? I think I read it years ago, but don't remember for sure.

message 62: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I only read City of Bones but I quit in the middle so I didn't get a chance to finish it.

message 63: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I was curious. The first book is the weakest of the three (I still loved it), but the books get progressively better and the last one is my favorite so far. I'm so glad she's decided to extend the series. I also can't wait to read Clockwork Angel and see what Cassandra Clare has dreamed up. I'll probably drop out of sight from the group for several hours once the book comes in. So many great books came out this Summer.

message 64: by Sashana (new)

Sashana That's why I decided to give the book another read. So many people are raving about it and it can't be for nothing. Hopefully (in this case) the sencond time will be the charm.

message 65: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Sashana, FYI by the third book Clary comes into her own. She grows.

message 66: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Thanks for the heads up Lisarenee. Now I'm really excited to read it. Growth is good especially when it comes to series, it would suck if the character didn't change or became too predictable.

Elise (elisebeth) Sashana wrote: "Elise, I’m going to re-read City of Bones tomorrow. I want to give it another try but I found the leading character (I forgot her name) to be a bit naive. It was so obvious that her best friend was..."

Clary is her name. Yeah she kind of got on my nerves but I enjoyed the overall story. I hope you fall in love with it as much as I did :)

message 68: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) | 3 comments Lisarenee what do you mean outdated?

To tell you the truth I read them because a lot of people liked them so I took my chance with them. I finished all the books althought I felt a stragle to read them. I don't put down a book even if it is gives me a headache. I want to know why people were so fond of a book that I didn't like? Or why the book became a best seller?

message 69: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 106 comments Avigail I can understand you.. I still keep read house of night just because of that! my friends love them and so I dont leave hon series:)

message 70: by Lisarenee (last edited Aug 26, 2010 12:07PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Avigail, I'm thinking if I read 1984 I did so a long time ago, but I may be confusing it with another book. Since it was written in 1949 I'm guessing 1984 refers to a future date? If so is it supposed to be a depiction of the future? So my question is if it was supposed to depict 1984 and we are presently in 2010 do you think the book loses something because of the period of time that has passed? Did I just confuse you more or does that make sense?

message 71: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) | 3 comments No you make sence the truth is I didn't like not because of the futuristic ideas. There are a lot of things that were written on the book and we can see them again. Mostly I didn't like the story line for me it was a depresive. I didn't like the book and it's my taste I will never say something about it to a person that likes it. I hope I made sence.

Enjoy your reading
Avigail

My friend love the HON series too and I dislike it so much I finally told her I was quitting on book four. It broke her little heart lol, but I just couldn't take it anymore.

message 73: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 106 comments heh heh Sashana I just cant stop myself when its about reading:) I decided to leave the serie( because of chosen!!!I hate it!) anyway but then my friends told me be patience and keep reading when you'll read the sixth book your opinion will completely change so I read it and yes, at sixth book it's really changed:) I like it right now but I dont know 12 books?! I wish the serie is 6/7 books cause it's just a bit boring:)and I hate zoey I love afrodith:/

message 74: by Amber (new)

Amber (ambysha) I really wasn't a fan of Revolutionary Road and In the Woods. I finished both of those books but after much struggling and boredom. I know a lot of people liked both of them, but I hated them and feel like I've lost hours of my life that I will never get back!

message 75: by Sans (new)

Sans I wish I hadn't read Seduction Becomes Her by Shirlee Busbee. In my review on another group I admited that I can totally deal with randy Scottish ghosts a la Allie Mackay and Lynn Kurland. In fact I love those. But dark spirits haunting a house and doing harm to the people who live there is NO. BUENO. (I can't even watch those ghost hunter shows on Syfy.)

Plus I was reading it in the middle of the night (insomnia) and my window was open so I kept getting a cool breeze on my neck. *shudders* Not good when you're reading about an oily black apparition that's coming out of the fireplace with the intent of hurting people.

message 76: by Sashana (last edited Sep 03, 2010 01:12PM) (new)

Sashana Sans you have insomnia too?! I never watch sci-fi movies or anything scary for that matter because I need what little sleep I manage to get. That book does sound creepy.

message 77: by Sans (new)

Sans I've had insomnia forever it seems. I average 3-4 hours sleep a night unless I'm exhausted an pass out for several more hours (like last night). But yeah. Uber creepy book. The worst part was, there was no mention of ghosts or any kind of paranormal activity in the summary on the back cover. Give a gal some warning at least.

message 78: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Ah, insomnia is the worst. I took sleeping pills for a while but one night I took too many so now I’m not allowed to take them. I’m up all night then I’m in school all day and it’s just horrible!

That's almost like false advertisng. lol How do they not tell you the book was like that? I swear I'd demand my money back (even though I'm sure I wouldn't get it back :) I want to read The Body Finder but someone told me it was written from the perspective of a serial killer which kind of turned me off the book.

message 79: by Sans (new)

Sans I tried Lunesta but it didn't seem to do much for me. Ambien gave me nightmares. *shudders* I still remember some of them too.

I got the book from the library, thank the stars. I was considering The Body Finder too, but I hadn't heard that. Hmm.

message 80: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 931 comments I don't have insomnia (I don't think,) but I can never fall asleep because I lay down and a billion thoughts soar through my head. I usually go into bed at 9 but don't really fall asleep until 2 or 3...

WOW! What a list...

message 82: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Your little side notes made me laugh, Arthur. Why did you like Catch-22?

message 83: by Arthur (new)

Arthur (astra) Sashana wrote: "Your little side notes made me laugh, Arthur. Why did you like Catch-22?"
You mean did NOT like? :)

message 84: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Sorry, yes. Why didn't you like it?

message 85: by Arthur (last edited Sep 21, 2010 02:27AM) (new)

Arthur (astra) Sashana wrote: "Sorry, yes. Why didn't you like it?"
Many reasons.
I didn't like his humour. The narration was boring and illogical. Hopping between characters, time periods. Not my style. Maybe because I work with computers and expect everything to be logical (besides love). I also am not a big fun of belittling soldiers and military, making fun of them.
I am no soldier myself. I narrowly escaped Russian Army, then I did serve in IDF. I hated it. It is not me at all. However, in IDF I learned to appreciate the importance of the Army. The same about American or British military. We have the luxury of sitting at home, having an access to the Internet and chatting on the forums. We do not think about people who work very hard make it possible. So, I have developed some sort of respect for professionals who risk their life and die for us...

P.S. Sashana, you are not a witch, are you? I am pretty much taciturn in real life and here I write whole essays.

message 86: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Lol, I'm not a witch, not that I know of. So true though, I guess we don't appreciate people unless they give us something concrete or are related to us in some way; so I don't really think about the people who serve in the military much. I have 2 friends (both 17) who just signed up for the Army so in a year they’ll be serving.

Agreed HON for me- but I keep reading whats wrong with me!
Also Vampire Diaries- sorry too cheesey!
Also The Secrets Of YAYA sisterhood-- I couldn't finish it. Which is unusual for me.
Tommy Knockers by Stephan King I just didn't get it and IT also by Stpehan king. Not because it was bad- becasue I was much to young to read it and was terrified!

message 88: by ~~*Julie (new)

~~*Julie Kawalec-pearson (jewel77) | 43 comments Another book I wish I hadn't read is 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill. He is one of my favourite authors but this collection of short stories just didn't do it for me.

I haven't read that one but did you read Heart Shaped Box?

Julie, I'm guessing your one of those people who HAVE to finish a sereis once they've already started.

Samantha | 0 comments Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.

I don't know why, but I really hate that book

message 91: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Arthur, I could not finish Catch-22. I tried. I got through 10 chapters and decided it wasn't for me. It's one of a few books I never finished. I thought maybe it was a "guy" book and I just didn't get it. Guess it wasn't just me.

Lauren | 931 comments Laser Rays from your eyes! Wowza! This must have been horrible!!

LOL Maybe some people might enjoy these kind of stories but I am and never will be one of them, and judging by the comments the book got, some people agree with me.

message 96: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 931 comments Haha Maryann, you're righ the reviews on this book don't look too good...

message 97: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (stacybinnj) | 57 comments I have to say that the worst book I've read in a long time is Breathless by Dean Koontz. I'm usually a fan but this book was BAD. It had lots of parallel plot lines which I usually like but they barely came together and I sat there thinking about how much better the book would be if he had just done more with it. It read like he was on a deadline for his book and just didn't finish!

I know there are lots of people who don't like the Sookie Stackhouse books but I'm addicted. I'll be honest though... I listened to them. I didn't read them. It's possible that they are better in audiobook. I'm also a massive True Blood fan so for me it's a great way to try to get me to next season.

message 98: by Sans (new)

Sans I liked the first four Sookie books, but I started losing interest after Eric got his memory back. Bill was turning in to an a**hat and I had so many other books to read. I keep figuring that I'll read the others some day.

message 99: by Miranda (new)

Miranda (ladyminnyofraven) | 10 comments I have two that come to mind:

'Cloudstreet' by Tim Winton. It was so boring. It was basically a story about two families, then this happened, then this happened, then this happened, and so on. It didn't feel like it had a begining, a middle, and an end. Luckily I didn't buy that one. I had to read it for school last year.

'Intertwined' by Gena Showalter. The blub on the back was so interesting but that story fell flat. The characters where annoying and Gena did a lot of telling and not a lot of showing. This book was really disappointing.

message 100: by Shadow Jubilee (last edited Nov 10, 2010 08:23AM) (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) Probably a lot of books I was forced to read in English classes in high school but those are probably just books I didn't like without any reason for wishing that I had not read it. The following though might be a bit different:

#1 A short book from Elloras Cave. It was fantasy, a favorite genre of mine. This burned me off Elloras Cave. It was horrible, horrible, horrible. I only finished reading it because I had paid for it. What a waste of money. I don't remember the title or the author. In comparison, Stephanie Meyer is a great author - seriously.

The Secret Pearl by Mary Balogh. I don't like how the story began. I don't like how it ended. I don't like how I still remember it.

The Hours by Michael Cunningham. Had to read this for university freshmen orientation. It was utterly painful.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. The descriptions made me a bit nauseous.

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Had to read it for school. Could barely stand it.

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. My mother recommended this book to me when I was in 6th grade, maybe? Read it a couple of years later. She had read it when she was younger. I didn't like the heroine much, nor how she got into certain relationships, or what happened to one of the few likable characters.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. I hate bugs. A man turned into a giant bug? Not my cup of a tea at all.

A historical romance by Beatrice Small. I wish I had not read it because there was a rape scene where the husband encouraged another and participated in. That was pretty horrific since I had liked the husband in the beginning of the book. The heroine is abducted and ends up in a harem (I think) where she is reluctantly made to sleep with another. Later both husband and wife are separated and committing bigamy (for the former aware that it's bigamy, the latter not). I hated the fact that I had initially believed in a happy ending with original husband and wife. The husband seemed like a decent sort.

Basically, I didn't like the rape scene, didn't like how the heroine is forced to undergo the particular trials she went through, didn't like how the characters turned out nor how they ended up in different relationships than the one I was hoping for, and didn't like the fact that the two main characters ended up committing bigamy. That book disappointed me on all levels.

To Wed a Stranger by Edith Layton. I liked the main characters, and the story of their romance. Unfortunately, the heroine's discovery about her father disquieted me to the point that I heartily wished I had not read this book.

The Handmaid's Tale. Was recommended to me by a high school friend. Found it disturbing.
