Chloe (countessofblooms) I am enjoying the new Girl Talk record far more than is reasonable. I can not wait for the drunken dance parties that are certain to follow putting this on at night.

You can download for free, or donate and get higher quality rips, from the website:

Wow, Allie, that's normally the kind of music I have loaded on my iPod as well. Normally I try to mix my listening choices with some indie and classics. Lately, I've added some Parliament/Funkadelic to the mix, because I need to free my ass.

If you can, try looking for a band called Viva Voce. They're from Atlanta, I believe, a husband & wife duo that rock out harder than the White Stipes. Good shit.

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I love it (though it's not all that helpful for your problem, sorry) that this may be the first time I started randomly listing off some of my favorite bands to someone whose music taste I didn't already know, and it turns out that person was already listening to a bunch of my favorite indie and indie-turned-major-label bands!

And Logan, keep spreading the Menomena love! They've got a couple of side projects worth checking out, too: Lackthereof has been around for a couple of years, and Faux Hoax (great name!) is the brand new one.

Gus, Viva Voce is all Portland. They do a kick-ass cover of The Alan Parsons Project's Eye In The Sky! (They've got a new side project too! But I can't remember the name, they just did their first show a week ago here in PDX.)

message 9: by Lisa (new)

Lisa If you can't find the Eye In The Sky cover, google Bridging The Distance (a stellar compilation of covers of what various portland bands consider "classic rock"; it's a benefit for a local agency that brings arts to homeless and disadvantaged kids). Or if that fails, PM me and I'll get it to you.

While the Faux Hoax track I've got is pretty good, don't skip over Menomena just to get to the side projects!

My current obsession is The Maybe Happening, but they self-released their first album, and they were too lazy to sit at the merch table at the show tonight. Damnit, if it's not available in local stores (or even CDbaby.com), you better damn sell it at your show!

message 10: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) HOLY CRAP LISA! I know the Maybe Happening! I went to school with Nathan, the violinist/poet who was really big in the slam poetry scene in Eugene before moving up to PDX and starting The Maybe Happening. They played at my friend's wedding at the Oregon Country Fairgrounds (beautiful setting, BTW). I had no idea anyone had ever heard of them, or that they were even still playing together. Moving away from OR definitely makes it hard to keep up, crazy hippies and their lack of internet connection.

I just looked at their MySpace and saw that they're a trio now. I have an early recording of them from when they were just a duo called the Truck Stop Sessions. I compressed it an uploaded it to Mediafire. You can download it here:

message 11: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Oh, kick ass! Thanks! I'll have to check that out.

Nathan fascinates me. Is he always like that? He's like a wind-up toy that never winds down. He also plays violin for my friend Nick Jaina, and Nathan totally makes the live show. He gets the audience to sing along, and conducts with his bow.

message 12: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) As far as I know, he's always been like that. The man has a charisma and a charm that get crowds hopelessly excited, I love it.

message 15: by Erin (new)

Erin i second parts of world peace's musical selection!

message 16: by Tom (new)

Tom Foolery (tomfoolery) Late to the party, but if you want to branch out a bit how about classical and jazz? Jazz, especially, is what dominated the US music scene for something like 40 years, and there's a reason for that. Can't go wrong with anything by Duke Ellington or Louis Armstrong (though the sound quality may not be the best sometimes), might also try Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, or Charles Mingus.

As for classical, there's so much out there that even if you think of it as elevator music there's bound to be something you'll like. Myself, i'm partial to Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and JS Bach, among others.

message 17: by Christopher (new)

Christopher (cahayes) I'm highly suggest the newest Nickelback album.

message 20: by Tom (last edited Aug 14, 2008 07:20PM) (new)

Tom Foolery (tomfoolery) Borderline due to hating on jazz, gratuitous use of exclamation marks, or both?

Reads with Scotch both and the use of things like jk/jk lol and whatnot.

message 22: by Rusty (new)

Rusty (rustyshackleford) | 2198 comments I’m not a huge jazz fan, but I am leary of anyone who dislikes Louis Armstrong.

message 23: by Tom (new)

Tom Foolery (tomfoolery) My dad mostly listens to country and church music (NOT contemporary christian music, but church choir sung from the hymnal type music) so i can't really criticize on that score as i don't have much enthusiasm for his music.

Though i have to admit, Johnny Cash kicks ass. Or would if he wasn't dead.

message 24: by Erin (new)
