It's my mom's influence...she also loves The Secret of Nimh. :-)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I'm only a short way into The Deed of Paksenarrion (Sheepfarmer's Daughter) and so far I'm loving it. :-)

I'm starting to wonder if anyone would be interested in a Buddy read.

message 1253: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Mrs. Joseph I love The Secret of Nimh! Still looking for a hardcover of it - maybe the upcoming book sale...

message 1254: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments You know I've never read it? I've only seen the cartoon (don't tell my mom, lol!).

message 1255: by Laurel (new)

Laurel No worries - the movie is just as good as the book:)

message 1256: by Scott (new)

Scott I loved Watership Down!

I do not know yet if this is fantasy, or just historical fiction, but I have started The Book of Shadows.

Huh, I can see why you say you're not sure. It seems interesting...the reviews are all over the place. I'd love to hear what you think of it.

I loved it too when I read it. Paks is a great character.

message 1260: by Jea0126 (new)

Jea0126 | 203 comments I'm starting book 2, Shadow Dawn, of the Chronicles of the Shadow War. Shadow Moon took a while to get into but was decent. Willow has come a long way. : )

message 1261: by Angie (new)

Angie (morwen84) | 19 comments it's awesome to see that most people love Watership Down. it makes me even more excited to see how it all plays out in the end. i'm also planning to read Mrs. Frisby And The Rats Of Nimh so it's good to hear that it is also a great book. have any of you read Duncton Wood by William Horwood? it's a anthromorphic fantasy about moles and it is excellent. a lot of reviews that i have read about it compare it favorably to Watership Down so it's something you guys might be interested in.

message 1262: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Ooh, I noticed The Windup Girl is April's read. Whoo-hoo! I read it and loved it, and still remember it. Now I can join in the discussion from the very beginning.

Finished The Pariah. It is a fun ride. Masterton is not afraid to throw in everything and the kitchen sink. When an author does that, it either becomes a fun ride, or can border on cheesy or too much. Masterton obviously is into Native American rituals, and other ancient rituals and lores. One thing about studying writing is that I noticed some writers do lots of research on topic(s) of interest and incorporate that into their imagination. Now, these writers may not be masters of the written language in their prose or style, but they can bang out a helluva good story. Masterton is that writer. I love literature, so I love a writer who has artistry in the written word, but I can also enjoy a fun story.

On to Doomsday Book. Also, my history buff friend Sid recommended Flyboys: A True Story of Courage to me because it has cannibalism in the story about the Japanese atrocities during WWII. Really interesting story. I had the urge to clear the deck and read Flyboys next, but I was set on reading Doomsday for the last week. I don't know. If Doomsday doesn't grab me from the very beginning, I might jump to Flyboys. The urge is pretty strong to read it. Who'd know being a cannibal, you can make so many friends?

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I just started on The Wise Man's Fear after a found a copy in the local library.

message 1267: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I said it in another group, and I'll say it again. It seems that some demon has possessed Kevin's body and is now forcing him to read WMF. This is a serious issue, it needs serious attention. Seriously! It's serious. For serious.

Seriously.

message 1268: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) This is what happeneds when I find a copy, borded, starts reading the book. I love Rothfuss's writing style that keeps the me wanting to read more, even if I hate Kvothe overall as a character.

message 1269: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) So wait.. Are you saying you actually like it? *drops dead*

message 1270: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I am saying Rothefuss creates horrible characters like Kovthe that feels no remorse for his actions, even if he knows its wrong from the start, but Rothefuss's ways with the written words is just simply amazing as many having pointed out.

message 1271: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Alrighty then.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I just finished Twilight Forever Rising by Lena Meydan. It was a very good book with a pretty interesting take on vampire social culture and organization. The magic aspects were pretty cool too. I hope to read more books, because I'm hooked.

message 1273: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I'm more ran half-way through Kushiel's Dart. I'm not sure what to read afterwards. I have a copy of The Forever War I'd like to read. I also want to get back to Wheel of Time with Crossroads of Twilight, not to mention Fool Moon... So many books!

I wasn't particularly impressed with Crossroads of Twilight. I hope you find it to be a better read than I did.

message 1275: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I decided on Flyboys: A True Story of Courage instead of Doomsday Book. But Doomsday is tops on my list to read or listen to. I put the audio in my Audible queue to get on the 8th. I've been having the urge to read up on disease and plagues. I might have a period of doing that. I need to add a disease and plagues shelf and start adding good books on that.

message 1276: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Which reminds me, there's a person in my Dark Fiction forum who's into plagues and diseases. Which also reminds me that I forgot to put my book update on there. Too many forums, but it's fun.

message 1277: by [deleted user] (new)

Did you find that book on Unit 731 I recommended yet, Aloha?

message 1278: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Not for under 30 bucks used!

message 1279: by [deleted user] (new)

Just steal Grants copy.

And while you're there, take his liver too.

message 1280: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Ala, you come up with the most practical ideas!

message 1281: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Did you regain the weight you lost, Grant?

message 1282: by [deleted user] (new)

Nope lost 5 more in fact! Ummm can we do a kidney instead? I have one to spare and can even offer a nifty recipe for shepherds pie!

message 1283: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Grant, did the book you read give a balanced point of view, or did it paint the Japanese as evil creatures? Flyboys so far gives a balanced point of view and explained why things happened the way they did, instead of being biased toward one side.

message 1284: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Deal, kidney it is! Let me get my knife and fork...

message 1285: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm it explained their reasoning but it's rather difficult to justify war crimes.

message 1286: by Aloha (last edited Mar 29, 2011 06:51PM) (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Atrocities are never justified, but Flyboys explained the progression of history. It also revealed the plenty of atrocities the west has committed in the genocide of races considered inferior for territorial expansion and racism.

message 1287: by Angie (new)

Angie (morwen84) | 19 comments William Horwood is wonderful. Another childhood favourite. I have all the Duncton and Wolves of Time books sitting near my bed at the moment actually, awaiting the opportunity for a reread. :)

cool. i don't find too many people that know of W.H., but maybe that's cause i live in the U.S., is he really popular in England? i have only read the first Duncton book, but i have the next 2 already and i plan on buying the rest of them and the Wolves of Time books too. have you read The Stonor Eagles and Callanish? i have those also and they are on my to-read list.

message 1288: by [deleted user] (new)

Started up Daemons Are Forever tonight. At this rate, I'll have read all Simon R. Greens books by the end of April...

message 1289: by [deleted user] (new)

Ala, I'm starting Daemons are Forever tonight too!

I agree. After all that ranting and raving against the book. I'm totally poleaxed. Next we'll be hearing about how horrible Redwall is. lol.

Let me guess, 10 minutes after this post you were finished with the book? :P

LOL, I was thinking the same thing!

message 1295: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 730 comments I finished The Windup Girl which I liked even more than I thought I would. I do have to make a big admission to Grant that yes, this is really closer to Science Fiction.
Now reading Assassin's Apprentice and Deadhouse Gates for the Malazan re-read

message 1296: by [deleted user] (new)

By now he's read the entire series, reread malazan, and then got bored and read the genetic code of everything

While smirking.

message 1298: by Amelia (last edited Mar 30, 2011 11:33AM) (new)

Amelia (narknon) I wish I could read that fast, sigh. (But I don't think I'd read things I'd be bored with, or rant about.)

I just finished Deadhouse Gates. First time reading Erikson's books. So far I like them, but they are very heavy, time-consuming books. I'll be starting the next one, Memories of Ice, probably in a week or so. I'm reading these for one of the other groups I'm in.

Inbetween the Malazan books, I like to read something quick and light, so I'm reading Hex Hall at the moment. So far, nothing much has happened, but I'm only on chapter three.

I also want to read Silverthorn before I start Memories. Who know I may even read another book before I delve back into Malazan. (I'm a gal who can only read one book at a time, so all of you multiple book people go through books faster than I do.)

message 1299: by [deleted user] (new)

Lmao. Nah I've only been able to read half of the Malazan series today :P

message 1300: by [deleted user] (new)

Maggie let me know what you think of Assassin's Apprentice / Royal Assassin!
