I'm glad to hear it. I haven't gotten too far yet but it seems like it should be a fun ride.

Clay (cdkorns) Scott wrote: "I'm glad to hear it. I haven't gotten too far yet but it seems like it should be a fun ride. "

Just don't go into it expecting Shakespeare! Dorsey is very conversational and blunt in his writing. But his humor and his ability to bring a large array of complicated plot elements together in an explosion of an ending is a joy to witness!

Now I'm wanting to re-read his stuff again... lol

Serge A. Storms is one of the best psychologically disturbed main characters I have ever encountered! You'll love (and fear) the guy!

I know! I thought this was a sight about books, ya know?
While we do talk msotly about books...it seems there is always a convo about brain-eating, coffee-splurting, and how vanilla one is going on at the same time...and that was just today!

Witness!

Clay (cdkorns) LOL!

I've been meaning to pick that up...but not until I knock some of my TBR list down.

message 1063: by Clay (new)

Clay (cdkorns) I have it on my Kindle too. But it's on the back burner for me as well right now. You'll have to let us know what you think, Stuart!

message 1064: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 730 comments I also want t read that, but with the Malazan re-read of Deadhouse Gates it has to wait for me too

I'm pretty much in the same boat!

message 1066: by Clay (new)

Clay (cdkorns) It almost sounds like The Way of Shadows might possibly make a good read of the month for this group... :)

message 1067: by [deleted user] (new)

It's a pretty good book, Clay. A fast paced action "flick". I picked it up expecting a bit of a throw away book but ended up really enjoying the series.

message 1068: by Clay (new)

Clay (cdkorns) Cool. I purchased it from Amazon a while back because I thought it looked interesting (read: fun) and had almost forgot about it until Stuart just mentioned it.

Did I mention that's the only drawback to the Kindle? I can't actually see the book sitting on my bookshelf ... so it's easy to forget what all is in there until I open my fantasy collection and peruse all the entries. lol

message 1069: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Clay, the way of Shadows was a group read here. It was in December 2010, probably one of the worst months for a group read. LOL It was also before Fantasy Aficionados blew up, too, so the discussion on the book was not very busy at all.

Noted. lol I'm real bad at not backtracking and checking things out before I blurt out my thoughts.

Maybe when a few more of us dig into it, we'll have enough to strike up a new thread or add onto the old. :)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments No prob, Clay! There's a lot here to track through, here. I just thought I'd let you know. :D

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments That's a good idea, Clay. I'm behind, too. I just finished the Man with the golden torc (loved it!)

Jea0126 | 203 comments Clay wrote: "It almost sounds like The Way of Shadows might possibly make a good read of the month for this group... :)"

It's a great series. Lots of action and intrigue with a hint of romance on the side. I'd like to get The Black Prism and see if it is equally good.

message 1074: by Traci (last edited Mar 18, 2011 09:32PM) (new)

Traci The Black Prism was one of my favorite books I read this past year. Has anyone read The River Kings' Road by Liane Merciel? I haven't noticed it mentioned anywhere yet. Really liked that one too.

message 1075: by Robert (new)

Robert (dimndbangr) | 17 comments I am currently reading.......This thread. HA. Actually, I am working my way through In the Shadow of Swordsby Val Gunn.

If y'all do decide to have a discussion on The Way of Shadows, let me know. I have read the whole series about a year and a half ago and loved all three books. They are definitely dark, gritty, gory, and full of foul language. For an excellent review without spoilers, I recommend reading Andrew "Beezermn" Gray's review from amazon. He refrains from spoilers and gives a very insightful review.

message 1076: by Clay (new)

Clay (cdkorns) Cool! Thanks for the info, Robert. I'll definitely check that out. The Way of Shadows is in my reading queue but I haven't yet decided how soon I'll get to it. Spoiler free reviews always help in making that decision.

message 1077: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (asfus) | 98 comments I am reading The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks as the whole assasin thing intrigued me.

message 1078: by Maggie (last edited Mar 20, 2011 11:17AM) (new)

Maggie K | 730 comments I am so caught up in GR that all of the books I am reading seem to be for reads!
I finished up The Blade Itself and am working on Foundation and Deadhouse Gates for other reads. I started Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell a little bit ago, but it has gotten pushed to the side. I did sneak in We Have Always Lived in the Castle and The Bards of Bone Plain in between those.
I really want to read The Way of Shadows as well!

message 1079: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I just finished The Way of Shadows. It took me awhie to like it, but I loved the last 1/2 of the book. I can't wait to move on to #2.

message 1080: by Aditya (new)

Aditya (mylavarapu) I personally thought the first two books in that series were superb, although I did find the third one a little disappointing, especially the conclusion.

I am currently halfway through reading The Bone Palace by Amanda Downum, having just finished The Wise Man's Fear.

message 1081: by [deleted user] (new)

Started A Hard Day's Knight yesterday. Which will bring me up to date on the Nightside series.

Will probably start up the Secret Histories books next week.

message 1082: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I just bought the first book in the Nightside series!

message 1083: by [deleted user] (new)

The series is a rollercoaster of quality. Some good, some bad. But they're all really, really quick reads you can do in an afternoon/evening of leisure.

They're literary popcorn, basically.

Good and quick.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I just finished God's War by Kameron Hurley , and I thought it was excellent. It's probably not for everyone, since it's dark and gritty and deals very heavily with religion and war, and how those two things meet.

message 1085: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Oh well, I like popcorn. :-)

message 1086: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) How is the Bone Palace? I got that as a free download.

Lady Danielle -- that sounds like something that is exctly what I like to read. I am off to check it out.

message 1087: by Aditya (new)

Aditya (mylavarapu) It's OK, nothing too special I would give it 2.5 to 3 stars.

There were times though where I got so bored with the plot that I wouldn't pick it up for a couple of days. However that being said, she places the novel in a really interesting East Asian sort of setting.

Let me know what you think, if you decide to go ahead and read it!

message 1088: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Thanks -- hmmmm, I may put it off for awhile. :)

I saw that mentioned at io9 the other day, looked interesting.

And for anyone who's wants to read it, looks like they're giving away free copies:

Or, for the lazy:

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I started The Iron Duke...I'm just hitting the middle and ran into a space I'm not happy with. I decided to pause to clear my mind.

Other than that, its pretty good. I love the world building and the characters are pretty realistic.

I also started Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. I'm not far into it as it's a side read but I can tell some of the reasons that others haven't gotten her humor. Her humor is rather dry.

message 1091: by [deleted user] (new)

Lord if half the things I've read about that woman are true, someone should drag her out in the street and put two in the back of her head.

Well I'm only 20 pages in...she isn't that bad yet, lol. It seems - so far - that she likes to threaten but doesn't follow through. She told her daughter that she had to stay outside in the freezing weather until she followed directions. Her daughter refused to follow directions OR come back inside...so mommy gave her a hot bath with ice cream and brownies.

message 1093: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Brown (matthewjbrown) | 218 comments @Aditya: are you sure you're reading The Bone Palace? The asianish setting is The Drowning City. The Bone Palace is much more Greek with some influences from India and Paris (the Catacombs).

message 1094: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Brown (matthewjbrown) | 218 comments I just finished Best Served Cold, and I think it's Abercrombie's best work. I think the tighter confines of a single-volume story work better for him, and it's less tied to upending fantasy clichés than The First Law is, which obsession I think harmed the trilogy's story.

message 1095: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I'm not sure, Mathew. I think he might be growing as a writer. I hope that's what it is, anyway. lol

Christine I'm reading The Help

Its completely out of the fantasy genre, but very good.

message 1098: by Jenni (new)

Jenni O'Danu) (odanu) | 4 comments I just finished Among Others, by Jo Walton, which is both good fantasy and an amazing tribute to the fantasy and SF I grew up with. I reviewed it at my blog and am too lazy to copy it here, but I'll give y'all a link. http://amnottheonlyone.blogspot.com/2...

I also just published my first ebook. The price is right at 0.99 USD, but I won't link it here because I don't know the rules on that. It's short fiction, considered YA or middle grades subgenre of fantasy, but not "little kid cutesy".

I'm also reading a trashy romance novel, but that's a fantasy of an entirely different sort.

message 1099: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (lostunicorn) I'm working on the Wheel of Time series....right now about halfway through book #8 The Path of Daggers. Hoping to make it through the whole series this year...that is assuming that there IS an end to it eventually?? Please say there is.....

message 1100: by [deleted user] (new)

It never ends. When you think it's ending, it really just starts back up again and you have to re-read everything. Backwards.
