In australia there are still people who use the term "japs" and think it is ok to do so (all of them being older). They all thought this was no big deal and not offensive. Culture has a lot to do with it as well most Australins i have met think it perfectly fine to be racist, they consider it a joke without harm.
I just finished reading Wizard's First Rule on the recommendation of someone I work with who always enjoys fantasy. I am a bit worried that I shall get kicked out of the fantasy groups because I didn't really like it. I liked the plot well enough, but found there was a bit too much sadistic violence for my taste. I was listening to it on audiobook so I couldn't skip those scenes, they just seem to go on and on imo. Haven't decided what to read next. Reread some Dresden files? I am listening to The Name of the Wind for the 3rd or 4th time in the interim. And, reading a Newbery novel--kids' book.
I can tell, by looking, the difference between Chinese, Japanese and Korean persons, but then I am Chinese and have traveled widely in Asia. I am sorry that we can't be Orientals any more; for years I was able to plume myself as an Oriental beauty (or, better, a -mysterious- Oriental beauty) and now I can't.
I started Jane Slayre: The Literary Classic with a Blood-Sucking Twist by Sherri Browning Erwin. Yeah, baby - bring on the schlock! :D
I'm reading The Big Sleep. I'm really enjoying it, and I can definitely see how Butcher is called the Chandler of fantasy.
I am taking a break from fantasy and reading a fascinating historical novel :Equal of the Sun by Anita Amirrezvani
about a princess living in 15 century Iran. It has mythic elements in that excerpts of Persian mythology precede the beginning of each chapter. This is the type of book you keep thinking about even when not reading it.
I finally started reading Transformation and CAN NOT put it down! Why didnt I start this earlier????
I'm halfway through the last book in my 100-book reading challenge for this year, Moon Called. Yay! And, I've also started reading Bookmarked For Death, a cozy murder mystery.
Maggie wrote: "I finally started reading Transformation and CAN NOT put it down! Why didnt I start this earlier????"I loved this series - if you are just starting it, it only gets better! Fabulous read.
I Just devoured Hannah's Garden by Midori Snyder! It is a really excellent YA novel that reminds me of "old school" Urban fantasy along the lines of Charles De Lint and Terri Wendling in that it involves faeries coexisting in our world, a leading character who is a musician and a writing style that relies more on characterisation and plot rather than action and violence. However something takes place in this book that also happens in one of Charlaine Harris’s more recent Sookie books. (view spoiler)
I wonder if Harris read Hannah’s Garden or if this is a coincidence! It was written in 2002, so before the Sookie book I am referring to.
just started reading The Castings Trilogy pretty good read so far, liking all the depth to the characters, even the minor ones have some little backstory showing how their actions have affected the story's progression.
I am continuing with my pseudo-scary reads with The Dead Path by Stephen M. Irwin. Not that far in, yet, but, so far, it seems like it actually has some potential...
Started and finished Gunmetal Magic because, of course, that's the only way to read those books. What a fun ride!
Just finished Terry Pratchett's A Hat Full of Sky (Discworld, #32) and Tom Rob Smith's Child 44Two completely different books and I loved them both; their stark contrast, fantasy and humour v horror and pathos making a perfect combination, the emotions of one heightening so acutely, those of the other. Two great reads and highly recommend them.

. Not sure If I like it or not, it keeps switching to different times."I have been wanting to read that book since finishing the first one recently. Does it have the same quality of the first?
Not exactly the newest release, but I'm finally getting to the ebook of Gardens of the Moon. Of course I tend to multi-task, so this may take awhile ...
Robert wrote: "Not exactly the newest release, but I'm finally getting to the ebook of Gardens of the Moon. Of course I tend to multi-task, so this may take awhile ..."That is a great series, and that book is good, the ones that come after it are even better.

It has the same dark mood, but again the fact that it keeps switching to different times in Jorgs life is kinda off putting to me.
Just finished An Ice Cold Grave by Charlaine Harris and now I'm starting Wildefire by Karsten Knight.

which sounded like a nice blend of fantasy and mystery."Looks like something I would like too Sharon!
Jalilah wrote: "a few chapters into Ready Player One"I loved that one, especially since I grew up in the 70's and 80's.
Just finished
. At the beginning I thought I wasnt going to enjoy it because it kept switching to different times in Jorg's life, but once I got into it, the switching slowed down and the book became really enjoyable. Highly Recommended if you've read the first in the series.
Finished A Drink Before the War. What an excellent book. Lehane's writing is fantastic. Now I'm reading Every Dead Thing.
Reading my first Lois McMaster Bujold with Paladin of Souls as I'm going to see her next Sunday on the last stop of her tour.
Kevin wrote: "Reading my first Lois McMaster Bujold with Paladin of Souls as I'm going to see her next Sunday on the last stop of her tour."Wish I would have the opportunity to meet her, one of my long time favorite authors.
Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls are two of my favorites as well. Wish she would write more fantasies set in that world.

She was here a few months ago. I wanted to get her sig but the line. O_o
I am about halfway through CRUCIBLE OF GOLD by Naomi Novik. I think that when the series is completely finished we will be able to conclude that there should have been about 2, maybe 3 volumes fewer in it.

To avoid the crowd and line, the used bookstore is asking for reservation of a dollar.
Just finished
. It's the second book in Peter Clines fantastic superhero/zombie 'Ex-Heroes' series. I can't believe this series does not receive more hype. Now I'm rereading
. It's one of my favorite books ever but I'm going to change things up and listen to the audio this time.

However the Term “Oriental” is complicated. I could write an essay. In Europe it is often used to refer to South East Asians, and it is not considered insulting. The term comes from the French word meaning east and was used to distinguish everything East of Europe. For example the “Orientalist” Painters were Europeans who drew their inspiration from The Middle East and North Africa.
Back to Children of the Night, (BTW, it is otherwise a great book!) Lackey repeatedly refers the Japanese character as “the Oriental”, and that is what I don't like.
Again knowing Lackey is very open minded, I doubt she has anything against Asians.
