Memories of Ice, after I bought a copy yesterday because about 20 pages of the book was cut off 1 inch on the top and bottom along with the text not printed until the middle of the page. I love the book so far.

Now I'd also like to re-read both Enchantment Emporium and the Wild Ways! I just finished The Wild Ways and loved it!

We were talking in another discussion about how a lot of Urban Fantasy is very violent. This book is proof that it is possible have a great and interesting story with a very minimal amount!

Same thing with the very graphic sex ... which is, actually, one of my issues, along with the graphic, bloody violence ... of much of the urban fantasy and why I don't read a lot of it.

One of the newer indie authors that has managed urban fantasy without a lot of either and uses humor very well in addition, is Stephany Simmons Very nice, light touch and I'm waiting very impatiently for the third in the series.

Same here! I don't mind sex in a novel but not when it overly graphic. While the sexuality in Tanya Huffs' books in rather unconventional, it is only insinuated and not at all in your face.

Sharon, I remember you were the one who recommended Mercedes Lackey to me for this reason.
I just started Burning Water
and am really enjoying it thus far!

I'm currently reading A Dance with Dragons by GRRM and The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. I really really liked the other 4 books in the song of ice and fire series but this book is somehow less interesting than the previous ones. I've started reading this weeks ago and i'm only halfway through. i didnt imagine Free Cities and the north could be so boring. I miss King's Landing ! I miss Jaime ! new characters in The Feast for Crows were quite interesting and were keeping the story alive. but none of if can be said about the characters (both old and new) in ADWD. Sometimes I doze off while reading this book. I hope something exciting will happen soon. I was so looking forward to reading this book. Please dont disappoint me, George!

I started to read The Golden Compass two days ago. So i cant say much about it except it seems to be an easy to read book.

This was a very good series, Rusty. I really enjoyed it. Fitz and Nighteyes were my two favourite characters.

Started The October Country instead, and loving it. I think I might have to bump up Ray Bradbury as being one of my top favorite writers.

I enjoyed it. I read it because I wanted to see if it was alright for my 12 year old to read. Even though it is a YA book, I really enjoy Maberry's writing and I feel that it is a good one for adults also. I will definitely read the rest of the series.

I thought the Blinding Knife was a way better book than The Black Prism. I hope you keep on going because there is a plot twist close to the end of the book.

I've been away from school myself long enough now that reading about it just doesn't interest me as it once did. Not to mention I feel like the whole 'magic school' idea has been done to death. I've put another hold on The Blinding Knife and have started A Wizard of Earthsea. I know, (view spoiler)[magic school=magic school, (hide spoiler)] but I'm really liking it so far. I don't know why I've never read it.

Listening to The Skin Map the way the narrator reads it, it seems most of the characters (at least around Kit) are Urbane Englishmen, even the villain. You know like a Bond villain:

"I quite understand, I'll speak to the chef."
"Yes I would."

I just finished Odd Thomas. I liked it but I knew what was going to happen at the very end so that kind of took away from my enjoyment a little.

Now I'm going to start 12.21: A Novel.

Just finished Death's Rival. Not only a page turner, hated to see it end as well and now can't wait for the next. This one and the first of the series are definitely my favorites of the books so far.

I am reading the second book of the Diana Tregarde series by Mercedes Lackey, Children of the Night ( the first is Burning Water).
Too bad Lackey did not write more! I really like her style in this series!

I wasn't a fan of the 3rd book in the series that much: Jinx High. I think that might be why it didn't finish.

That one was a disappointment for me as well, I tend to not deal too well with teenagers anyway and that one (obviously) was full of them. I do wish she'd have gone on to more 'cases' though ... just not the teenagers.

That is too bad! But could it also be that Lackey's regular readers were used to her high fantasy books? Sometimes when authors change their style fans don't like it.

That may be part of it and I also think she was a bit ahead of the curve with the urban fantasy/modern day witch theme.

I suspect she might gather up new readers if she came out with another book in that series.

I agree. She did something that was very now quite a few years ago. More than 15 I think. ANd I thought they were very well done...good enough to stand next to most of the kick butt heroines out now. Her character didn't wield a sword but she wasn't helpless by a long shot.

But it wasn't really being done at the time.

I forgot to mention this. As I already said that I think this book is great, but one thing really bothers me. Lackey keeps referring to a Japanese character as “an Oriental". It is driving me crazy! I am certain Lackey is not racist, just ignorant regarding this term. Since the book was written in 1990, I hope she knows better now.

I like to think its a generational thing and it will improve. My mom does it as well.

I'm sure it's generational to some extent, but then how many average Americans can tell the difference between Japanese, Chinese and the other "Oriental" races? If you don't know, what is the considered the correct PC terminology?

It's a generational thing. I was raised by my grandmother (for the most part) and I was taught to use that term for Asians. In school one of my best friends was a Korean girl and it just came out one day. I didn't mean anything by it of course, but she got really mad and since that day I know not to. But I also learned that not all slurs are intentional.
