Regina (reginar) I need to add Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter.

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) Lacy wrote: ''I like this series mostly because it combines romance, action and vampires. I love the banter between the brothers and all the humor that lightens the mood of the book. I can understand why some people do not like this series, but I personally love it. I think that if you are a romance novel junkie then this is the kind of series for you."

I agree, Lacy. Love the BDB series. I also like the way J.R. Ward portrays the vampire community. Love the way she sets up the HEA and the way she writes her true mates (Hellrens and Shellans)...very unique. The mating ceremonies are very sweet and romantic. Her "world" of vampires are different from your basic vampire legend.....the way the warriors are chosen to watch over civilian vampires, their training, their lives, etc. It's different and interesting, imo.

the first one was hard to get into i admit but if you can push yourself you will like city of ashes. i love the series but i totally agree with on that first book it was slow n i couldnt grasp it.

message 304: by Laurine (new)

Laurine Currin | 3 comments The series I just couldn't get into was Vampire Diaries. The plot in each book becomes more and more far fetched, I found myself rolling my eyes and saying "whatever" to the book.

I found the Sookie stackhouse series bit too simple for my liking. The characters weren't very complicated and I felt pretty much everything lacked depth.

I loved the HON series, but the last 2 books haven't been anything like how I expected. I hate the way they've changed the narrative.

I'm not sure if this question has been answered already but which series is BDB?

You can't read any of Robin McKinleys books such as Sunshine unless you are really into descriptive writing - its kind of her 'thing'. Also she never writes series so you can pretty much guarantee if you pick up a book thats it - however it ends.

message 307: by Drea (new)

Drea | 9 comments A big thing for me when it comes to these books is whether or not it's written for an adult. I liked the Twilight series because it was well written, so I thought since it was a YA book that I would try some other YA books, and I realized that the writing is just too much for a young adult. Stephenie Meyer somehow does not run into the same problem as the other YA PNR books have, at least in my opinion. I used to love the Vampire Diaries and the Nightworld books by L.J. Smith... when I was teenager, because I was the age that the books were written for. I tried to read Dark Visions by L.J. recently, and I couldn't get through more than a couple chapters. I've realized that I just need to steer clear of the YA books and go for the authors that write adult books.

message 308: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments The Young Adult books don't usually work for me either. I did read the Twilight series to see what all the fuss was about. I wanted to strangle that Bella chick. Gag me with a spoon.

With the exception of Harry Potter, I just can't get into Young Adult books either. I tried Twilight & My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent, but I couldn't finish either one. I do have one of Kelley Armstrong's YA novels, but I'm hesitant to read it.

message 310: by [deleted user] (new)

I did love Twilight, the whole thing. Breaking Dawn was kind of a mess, but I still liked it.

But out of all the clones that have come out there in the past few years, the only ones that I have liked at all were the ones by Maggie Stiefvater. I loved Shiver, Linger, Ballad and Lament, and the Vampire Academy Series.

I've tried several others though- Hush Hush, Evermore, Fallen, House of Night, and they just don't even come close. HoN was ok in the beginning, but has really gone downhill, Fallen was kinda meh, not bad, just meh, but I hated Evermore and Hush Hush. Asshole "heroes" just aren't my thing, ya know? Alpha, sure, but asshole, I'll pass.

message 311: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments Oh I forgot. I liked Shiver. It did have some of that GAG ME! heroine getting all wrapped in hero thing. Poor little girl just can't think straight if she isn't near her boyfriend... but I guess I forgave her because I was worried about Sam too. Shiver wasn't my usual kind of read but I liked it.

message 312: by [deleted user] (new)

Have you read Linger yet? It was really good too.

You're not alone. I couldn't finish the series either. The story just kept on dragging. I just wanted to scream "just do something already!" haha. I ended up reading half of book 4, then decided to return it.

Lauren⁷ 💜 (lrc123) | 115 comments I read the first House Of Night novel. And after finishing it i was thinking, this waste of trees and ink got published, why? Those poor trees. The sole good thing i can say is that the covers for the HON books are fantastic. And although it's not a series, the anthology Immortal: Love Stories With Bite....... Words almost fail me as to just how bad it is, dreck. Sheer and utter dreck. P.C. Cast needs to go to a college with a good English program.

message 315: by Jaime (last edited Jul 22, 2010 08:28AM) (new)

Jaime Rush (jaime_rush) | 122 comments Thanks for the info on BDB! I'll check out the link, Heather!

What I find so interesting is the subjectivity in reading opinions. That one book/series can inspire such diverse reactions...sometimes I wonder if it's the same book. We are all different, and that's the beauty of it.

message 316: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Jul 22, 2010 08:34AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments I think Lacy and Jessa said it very well for me about the BDB. I like the strong male viewpoints, and I think they are good love stories. I like the vampire world she has created, and how complicated each character is. I think the villains could be better. Lash was the best villain so far. I am definitely an addict of the BDB, but to each their own.

message 317: by Jen ~The dreamer~ (new)

Jen ~The dreamer~ | 649 comments Lash was awesome!! I loved his character and I'm guessing he'll be making an appearance again soon. I hated him so much and that's what makes him the best villain!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments Agreed, Jen. But I admit I kind of felt amused with some of his antics (not the really bad stuff), more his arrogance. He was a complex villain, which is what I look for. The Omega is not scary at all!

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) Yeah, Lash was a good villian. Very slimey and such an a-hole. I hated the way he treated Blay when they were in training. And then what he did to Xhex...bad, bad man. Very villianous!

message 320: by Jen ~The dreamer~ (new)

Jen ~The dreamer~ | 649 comments Agreed, he's so evil and so dark and hateful it makes his humor terrifying yet fun. Make sense?

On the BDB front--has anyone else noticed that this series seems to be one where no one goes "eh, its OK I guess,"? Everyone that responds to posts about it seems to be either a fanatic supporter or a fanatic hater.

message 323: by Jen ~The dreamer~ (new)

Jen ~The dreamer~ | 649 comments I've noticed that too, Ann...I'm a lover. It's one of my top 5 favorite series.

message 324: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (thebookwarrioress) | 38 comments Me too, I love BDB, one of my top 5, as well. I do tend to skip the Lesser parts though. Until Lash, they really didn't seem to serve a purpose.

message 325: by [deleted user] (new)

I never skipped it, but I do tend to give those parts more of a skim than a deep read.

But Lash did help all that, I paid more attention when he was on the scene. He's one of those guys you love to hate.

Hi Brittany, I laughed when I saw what you said about Dead Witch Walking. I couldn't get through it the first time but the second try I did. But you want to know something? They actually do get better! I've only read the first 3 but talked to someone who has read most of them and she told me some stuff that happens in the future books and it is good. They're still not "can't put down" type of books, but when I need a filler book, I will go and get the 4th one at the library. Rachel and Kisten I am interested in reading more about.

Very true. I myself am a fan but to each their own..

Book I hated: Sunshine by Robin McKinley
I had to restrain myself from throwing it out the window as I was reading it. Only reason I finished the thing is I started it, and I was damn well going to finish it! I will never read another McKinley. Painful.. (shivers)

message 329: by Sandra J (last edited Jul 23, 2010 04:51AM) (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 451 comments I like Robin McKinley, and I didn't like Sunshine. Try The Blue Sword or The Hero and the Crown. They're more YA, I think, and both feature an interesting heroine. I also enjoyed Deerskin and Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast. I'm not sure how I feel about Chalice. I only read the first chapter before I put it down, so I have to go find it. It's probably at the bottom of the TBR mountain. That being said, I wouldn't recommend you buy any of these. Try the library. I hate recommending books for people if there's a possibility that they won't like the book. No use wasting your money.

message 330: by Mairead (new)

Mairead | 164 comments I tried the Beauty book, and felt swarmed by words. Too much description just isn't my thing! :P
I really don't like the Sookie Stackhouse books! Eric is the only good character. It's odd that I find the books dull as dishwater, but love True blood (the show) with a no-holds barred passion!

The Hollows series defintely does get better. I hard a hard time getting through the first book. I think Kim Harrison spent way too much time on Rachel as a Mink. I wasn't going to read the second book, but on a whim I picked it up at the library & it wasn't too bad. I thought the fourth book (the one with the Mackinaw Bridge) was kind of slow as well.

message 333: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments Hang in there, it gets better. I wasn't all that impressed with the first book either. I just wanted Faythe to grow up and lose that loser boyfriend of hers. Now, I'm bummed the series is ending.

message 336: by ஐAndreaஐ (new)

ஐAndreaஐ (rosesrrblue) | 707 comments I will. I haven't gotten any reading done at all this weekend so I haven't even fished yet. I'm not liking Faythe a lot either.

Whoa! Whoa! The series is ending? What is or is going to be the last book?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Book 6, Alpha will be the last. It comes out in a few months.

The series does get a LOT better as it goes. Don't give up on it yet!

Jessie | 2 comments I just can't get over how angry I am at those Wicked Lovely books by Melissa Marr. The characters make me irrate. I gave them a chance. I tried. Ugh.

I'm also not a fan of the Mona Lisa series. First 10 pages:

-Hello, you are a queen for a whole race of people.
-I am?
-Yes, I am drawn to you. Look at my crotch.
-Yes, I can control you. Do me.

Bleh.

SmutBitch - Have you tried The Dark Divine? I think it kind of falls into the Twilight/Shiver/Ballad category.

message 344: by [deleted user] (new)

No, I'll have to look it up, thanks!

message 345: by [deleted user] (new)

You're welcome. YMMV but I loved all the series you mentioned and loved this one too.

message 346: by [deleted user] (new)

I gave up on the Mary Janice Davidson series after the first book. I became very tired of the humor in the book. I also did not continue the series by Jacqueline Franks (first book Jacob). I just did not care enough to continue the series.

Although I liked the first book in the Riley Jensen series I did not care enough to read any other books. I tend to become tired of series after so many books.

I also liked Sherrilyn Kenyon at first but now I can't be bothered. I did like Acheron but I don't care enough to continue the series.

I liked JR Ward's books but the last few have left me cold. I do like Lover Mine (still reading it).

I have read the first book in the Lara Adrian series but they are so similar to JR Ward's books that I may wait and see if I will continue the series.

After about 5 books series begin to feel stale to me.

message 347: by Malena (new)

Malena (mallena) | 23 comments The Vampire Diaries - TV series is better than the book. Just sad.

A House of Night - first book I was very disappointed. I do not know why I bought the second one?!

The Vampire Queen's Servant - I'm just not able to read even the first book. Just not for me. The book did not intrigue me.

Purr More (m222) I couldn't get through more than about 50-60 pages of The Brass Bed. The Brass Bed by Jennifer Stevenson . It was offered in a book ring and I don't think one person in the ring liked it and most didn't finish it either!
