I always wanted to open a bar called The Fubar. Just to see if anyone got it.

Carri (carrifedor) I feel the same way about Twilight. I refuse to apologize for loving it. It made me enjoy reading again. It introduced me to a whole genre of books that i did not even think to read before, and i love them. People can bash the series all they want, I don't care. Loved it.

I'm in the same boat Carri!

Twilight sparked my love for reading... books and I have been inseperable since!

:)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 112 comments I don't hate Twilight because it's encouraged many people to read what I do. Goodreads would've been a lonelier place for us if Twilight hadn't been written but at the same time it isn't a great series.

I've noticed many people who read Twilight and then became a reading addict have said they don't like it as much as they did when they first read it because they've read more widely.

AH | 123 comments Remember me was well done. Have a big box of kleenex ready, though, it will make you cry.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 411 comments I don't begrudge people liking Twilight when I am not a fan, it is all a matter of personal taste and what people prefer. 'Sides any book that encourages people to read is fine with me (even if I don't like it), it is like the Harry Potter craze (which I fully participated in!) as long as people are reading it's all good

message 258: by Jessica (last edited Jul 12, 2010 02:24PM) (new)

Jessica (jestown) I absolutely hated Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson. I couldnt finish the book.

I really disliked Shadow Game by Christine Feehan... I loved the idea she had, she just wrote it poorly.

message 259: by Heather in FL (last edited Jul 12, 2010 04:43PM) (new)

Heather in FL (heather_fl) I'm another one where Twilight sparked my love of reading. I definitely don't hate it, I just think there are better series, now that I've read more. The base story of Twilight is very sweet, I think, and it gave me a nice world for my mind to disappear in for a while.

Before Twilight, I didn't read fiction AT ALL. If not for a friend at work who was into PNR and heard us talking about Twilight, I might still not be reading so much, so really, it was the combo of Twilight and friend. But I don't seem to be able to get enough these days, lol. My TBR list keeps growing and growing! I might not have found or tried many of the series if not for Goodreads. :-)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments I've been reading about thirty plus years, and I was a paranormal fan long before Twilight. I think it was a great book. Just my two cents.

message 261: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments Carri/Kelleigh/Andrea/Lady D, thanks for making not feel like a total nerdy freak! I had fun reading them as my friend was reading them first, then lending them out to me.

message 262: by Jen ~The dreamer~ (new)

Jen ~The dreamer~ | 649 comments No one should apologize for liking or disliking a book. IMO. I love to get all the different opinions. I know a lot of people who read Twilight and now are avid readers and that is fantastic. It also helped millions of teens pick books up and make books cool again. I did like Twilight, but I have found other books even better and that's ok. I hope every new series I pick up is better than the last. That's what makes me want to keep reading.

message 263: by Kb (new)

Kb | 3 comments I've enjoyed the first two books of the Anita Blake series but I am put off by the amount of erotica that seems to take over in the following books. She is an interesting writer - it just seems that she is taking the easy road with filling up half her books with it.

The Merry Gentry Series also LKH is why the heck bother...life is too short. The Lair of the White Worm - short story by Brahm Stoker is so not worth the trouble.

message 264: by MsBeaglely (new)

MsBeaglely | 118 comments I'm not a huge Twilight fan myself, but I don't think anyone should have to justify why they like or dislike the series. I've tried to read Twilight, but ended up watching to movie before finishing the book and as a result lost any desire to read the book. I'd rather watch the Twilight movies and skip the books.

Now Harry Potter is another story. I love the HP books & movies. Since I live in Florida, I did get a sneak peak at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter last month. I think I liked HP better than Twilight because it's more Urban Fantasy, which is my prefered genre. I'm not big on romance books & like teen romance books even less. I never did like the teen angst theme even when I was a teenager.

Lacy♪ ♫Movements of a Demigod ♪ ♫ (lb3553) | 238 comments Jen wrote: "I'm not a huge Twilight fan myself, but I don't think anyone should have to justify why they like or dislike the series. I've tried to read Twilight, but ended up watching to movie before finishin..."

I agree I am not a Twilight fan either. I think for me the problem is that I am trying to compare it to the likes of Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon and that is like comparing apples and oranges. I only saw the first movie and I can't say I would pay money to see the others. I agree the teen angst theme has been overdone and even though I love romance, I can only take so much of a girl throwing herself at a guy before I want to have a book burning party.

message 271: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 69 comments Wow seems there are a lot of us in the same boat regarding Twilight!
I hadn't picked up a book in years until Twilight was recommended to me by a friend and since then haven't stopped reading. Like many it was also the first PNR book I'd ever read and it has opened my mind up to a whole new world!
After I finished Twilight I thought I would never find another series as good, but I know now there are a lot of fantastic books out there to be discovered!
I still love Twilight and always will for the amazing world it has introduced me too!! :)

message 272: by Ana (last edited Jul 14, 2010 07:19AM) (new)

Ana (anacnunes) I really tried to get into Guilty Pleasures, but I hated it and never got past the middle of the first book. Anita was a main character I couldn't like and the story was utterly boring to me. (We can't all like the same, right?)

With Dead Witch Walking I finished the first book, but on will alone, and don't intend to read the rest. I didn't like the main character or any of the other charcetrs in particular, and nothing in the story pulled me in.

I also hated Eclipse, even though I "managed" to read the first book, and I actually liked the second. The thrid book was just Horrible!

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 5 comments I have to admit I also didn't enjoy The Mortal Instrument series. I had heard so many rave reviews about it but just couldn't get past the first 100 pages. I was also very disappointed with Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr but I think that was more of a case of judging a book by its cover (its beautiful) and being disappointed.

message 274: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments There are a few series I liked initially and then I got tired of them
The Night Huntress Jeaniene Frost. I got too book three and got fed up on the violence.
Karen Chance I actually loved the first two books but got tired in the third.
Gena Showalter I read one and that's enough. I like romance in my books and I have dropped books because they didn't have a romance element but this one had TOO too much romance and not enough story. It also seemed like a pale imitation of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
Speaking of which, I read six of them but I didn't read the last two. I'm not going to say never on those but I feel like I've "been there, read that" the series is too predictable.

LOVE this! A great answer! I read the first and watched the second movie, and am still going..."Uh...what's the big appeal?" I do like Jacob, but Bella and Edward leave me cold, pun intended. I'd like Jacob to end up with someone worthy of him. However, the good thing about Twilight is that it got people reading the same way Harry Potter got kids reading. And that is never a bad thing :)

Thanks for the definition, Smutbitch. Okay, now I'm wondering why those books are considered FUBAR.

message 276: by Sarah (last edited Jul 15, 2010 10:49AM) (new)

Sarah I agree. I do not understand the appeal of Twilight. Bella is spoiled and nobody will ever be perfect. I like characters with some flaws. Edward apparently had none. Jacob was probably the most realistic character personality wise. but honestly, many vampire books are better than twilight. most people probably read the books because jacob was played by a hot guy with abs :P

message 277: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 182 comments I did read Twilight to see what all the fuss was about. I wanted to shake some sense into Bella- this whole idea of being near catatonic because her boyfriend left her bugged the hell out of me. Not a great female role model that one.
I will say if you hung on the books got pretty good about three quarters of the way through.
It was okay but not worth all the hype it got.

message 278: by ஐAndreaஐ (last edited Jul 15, 2010 02:53PM) (new)

ஐAndreaஐ (rosesrrblue) | 707 comments Let me just say, the best thing about twilight is the fact of how many teens for the first time opened a book for personal reading. How many of those girls had never read a book that wasn't for school. Hell, my sister who's 25 never read a book before and is now reading at least 2 a month. Maybe it's not the the most amazing story ever, but it's worth the hype. If nothing else, look what it accomplished.

I loved the books and was completely obsessed for at least a year. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed reading. Since then I've read lot of books I like more, but I enjoyed the story.

message 281: by Alyce (new)

Alyce | 1 comments I used to read when I was younger (ie. Harry Potter), but after reading twilight, I found a new addiction.. Reading!
I totally understand why people dont like it, but for some reason I'm totally spell-bound by the story.

Books I've started but couldn't finish:
Lords of the Underworld - bought the whole series, got half way through the second book and gave up.
The Hollows - Rachel Morgan annoys the crap out of me! I couldn't get past the 50-page mark.
Merry Gentry - I got all the way to the most recent book but gave up half way through that book. Too much sex!!
TVD - Most boring series ever made. Read up until the 5th book (how I did it, I have no idea) and gave up.
Midnight Breed - was recommended to read this + lords of the underworld cos I really liked BDB but I realised after the first book that it was nowhere near as good!

message 282: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Hyde (ittybittybee) | 28 comments Karen Chance's Cassie Palmer's Series sucks so much but Her Midnight Daughter Series is Good.

Rachel Vincent's Series is annoying to me now, but I gotta see what happens in the end.

, Dead Witch walking, made me so incredbily bored, that I went to sleep in it. I usually atleast try to finish books, but that book just sucked.

Magic in the Bone, I got the book, but it was kind of dry to me. I wanna know, has anybody read the entire series, because somebody said it gets better, but i have my doubts.

I will also agree that The House of Night series is also getting up there.

Oh yes, and the Vampire Kisses story.

I'm over the BDB craze. altho the latest book was better, I usually skip the lesser parts, and at least that portion of the books seems to be getting better.

There are a lot of books that are just OK, I don't love them, I don't hate them. Most books have something that bothers me at some point.. lol

I really wished I liked BDB, I read the first 3 books, and couldn't really get into it. I really can't stand the bad guy series.

I like this series mostly because it combines romance, action and vampires. I love the banter between the brothers and all the humor that lightens the mood of the book. Exactly. I've only read the first one but I really like the heroes and their banter. I will say that I tend to skim over the parts with the lessers. I read enough of those parts that I know what the bad guy is doing but that's about it.
