Newest GR thingy ... "Goodreads Deals" (US only - so far, I'm guessing) We found a great deal for an ebook by an author you follow! If that link doesn't work for you, go to your account settings, select DEALS and make your preferred changes there.
Now Goodreads emails you whenever we find noteworthy deals on ebooks on your Want to Read shelf or by authors you follow. You can adjust your email settings here.
You can read the GR announcement here.
So, a welcomed addition to the site or ...?
Luckily its US only at this point. For me it would just be spam as I already own everything on my Want To Read shelf. And who wants to see deals on stuff they already own, so they feel foolish for spending so much money. LOL.
Now if it gave you the option to change shelves, like say Wishlist, it might be OK. But really its just another way to make money off us poor readers.

Agreed!

I totally agree with you, and opt-in by default? That's spam, yes.

I agree from a reader's point of view, and as someone who just plain hates ads and spam. But as an author, I really have to get my books out there, so it's a weird position to be in. Potentially annoy current readers for exposure to possible new ones.
The first email I got like this was for American Gods, which for some strange reason I have not read yet. So it was appreciated news. The other couple emails I didn't care about, so I swiped to archive on my phone.
Which is exactly what might happen to my own books, come to think about it.
It's lose/lose, I guess.
Yep Deborah, it's 1 in a hundred for me that I even look at email recs. I get them all the time from kindle and they are really useless, they have all my kindle purchases to reference, and they can't get it right.
Sandra wrote: "ow if it gave you the option to change shelves, like say Wishlist, it might be OK. But really its just another way to make money off us poor readers. "More commercialization and the effect of the Amazon purchase ... spam and sell, spam and sell :0(
Deborah wrote: "Potentially annoy current readers for exposure to possible new ones.."Personally, I find this forceable in-your-face advertising offensive and the author goes on my "never buying their book" list. It does not matter if it is a new to me author or one that I've read and enjoyed before. This spamming and excessive self-promotion is a HUGE turn-off and counter-productive to new and struggling authors. They are better ways to promote a book - do a blog tour, have a giveaway, offer the book as a freebie for a limited time, write a good book that others rave about (this is how I get most of my Indie authors) - there is NO need to spam readers over and over.
Sandra wrote: "For me it would just be spam as I already own everything on my Want To Read shelf. And who wants to see deals on stuff they already own..."Ditto. Now if they target "wishlist" it would be ok.
It's a rose. Blew the dust off my paints and brushes. A magnolia blossom is a good idea, might be next subject.
Gorgeous!!!! And well done Lis :DLots of good colours to pick from if you do a magnolia - I love the dark broody ones :)
Lauren wrote: "More commercialization and the effect of the Amazon purchase ... spam and sell, spam and sell :0( "Feel the same about it, Lauren.
Gorgeous, Lis! :D
So, yet another visual change ... "A New Look for the Goodreads Homepage" ... what do you think of it? It reminds me a bit of Leafmarks and, IMO, it's an unnecessary change. But, I'm an old lady (hehe) and resistant to change (not really), so that might be my issue with it. Or, I could just be tired of TPTB making these types of changes instead of um, I don't know, actually fixing and/or modifying things that have been requested for years. Yeah, that's probably it. >:)
Don't like the "new look"? At least for now, there's a link to switch to the "old site" located below the "Test Your Knowledge" box.
Yeah, this new look is crap, and once its finalized we won't be able to turn off the recs. :(It's all about selling - the review space from friends is much smaller.
Yeah I agree. They've definitely shifted focus to selling. No longer truly a site for readers. :( Makes me sad.

Its truly awful. I'm waiting for them to make the discussion tab available again so that my groups will be my homepage. I really hope they keep their promise about including it.
Any idea when this will "truly" go into effect for everyone - I don't like it at all....not user friendly for those that want to hang in discussion threads. Also in the feedback group comment thread - MODS have stated that you can change the settings for your view of homepage. I'm hoping they will have a thread that shows us how to do this as I will want to continue to see my groups on the homepage :D
As long as "discussions" is put back you'll see your groups. At the moment only "updates" is there, but PTB have said discussions will be there.

Not sure if this is something anyone would wanna do, but noticed a new widget has been added. Now, you can share your "currently reading" in your personal email signature line. To do this, go to ACCOUNT SETTINGS, WIDGETS and follow instructions for creating an email signature.
"Shows the cover of the book you're currently reading. Your email recipients will always see your most recent book marked Currently Reading."
WTH are they thinking???????????Obviously thought of by someone who doesn't read erotica or romance. Could you imagine some of those covers!!!!
Nooooooooo Way!!!! I won't even associate my goodreads with my Facebook account for that reason... No one but my SOS friends needs to know what I'm reading. ;)
Lis wrote: "Nooooooooo Way!!!! I won't even associate my goodreads with my Facebook account for that reason... No one but my SOS friends needs to know what I'm reading. ;)"Exaaaactly! Me too!
Sandra wrote: "WTH are they thinking???????????Obviously thought of by someone who doesn't read erotica or romance. Could you imagine some of those covers!!!!"
Yeeees, and I could share it with a group of friends, but only with them.
GR has modified their series page and I like. (ETA: I scrolled to the bottom and, while I like the look, now longer series are on multiple pages and I'm lazy. LOL! ) >:)Kate Daniels' series page
I just wish they'd fix some of the other things members have been asking for almost a decade.
I'm a little annoyed at the new look because it takes up so much room to just see the ordering of the books. I guess when I'm looking at the series link, it's usually so I can figure out what book to read next, not to read the description of
the book.
(grumble grumble)
Okay, I'm better now :)
DO NOT LIKE the new series page, at all. Huge gigantic covers & blurb for each book just doesn't work for the librarians trying to fix things!!!ETA: And it doesn't show your rating just that you've read it or not.
Yeah, I've since changed my mind, too. I like the covers b/c they are so pretty all lined up, esp on the side where they show the author's other series. But, there's a lot not to like - all you've both mentioned. :( Boo.
I like it...mainly because every time I'm going to the series page it's to find out which book held whichever plot I'm trying to explain to someone else (did that make any sense??).This way, I can just read as I go until I find what I'm looking for. Maybe I'll change my mind, but my gut reaction is 'cool.'

Think you go to that page and you find non-read books... with spoilers all over the page.
Since some of these questions have been discussed around SOS, I thought I'd share Goodreads Feedback Group's FAQ thread.Since a few topics come up repeatedly in this group, we’ve quickly summarized our thinking on them here. Please make sure to search for existing threads on any topic you’d like to discuss before creating a new post!
Half stars: We are unlikely to ever add half stars to Goodreads. If you're interested in our CEO Otis’s opinion on half stars, you can read it here. Because of this, we are likely to close any new threads created about half stars. Feel free to peruse past posts on the topic by searching for “half stars” in the group search; it’s very likely that someone has already made the same argument for or against them!
Pre-release reviews: Goodreads policy allows members to rate books as soon as they are listed on the site. Many of our members receive ARCs (Advanced Reading Copies) from publishers, which means they tend to write reviews of books pre-publication. Other members like to use the rating system to indicate their level of interest or excitement in a book. As there is no one set way to use the rating system, we view this as a valid use of the site. For that reason, this policy is not likely to change.
Creating a “Did Not Finish” shelf or something similar: This can be done by creating an exclusive shelf, which will allow you to assign a book to your “DNF” or “Abandoned” shelf instead of having to shelve it as Read, Currently Reading, or Want to Read. Here are the instructions for how to do so. Because of this, we have no plans to create such a shelf across Goodreads.
Private shelves: One of the reasons we started Goodreads was to see what our friends are reading. For this reason, we do not plan to build private shelves.
Inaccurate book information: If you find missing or incorrect data on a book on Goodreads, please visit the Librarians Group . Our volunteer librarians will be happy to help!

That brings up my biggest issue (really for the past several years): it seems they TPTB are more willing and able to modify things that are working fine and don't fix the things many members see as an actual problem or submit a request for around groups and such.
I guess, as long as I am able to access my group, I'm able to ignore the rest of what annoys me - for the most part anyway.
