20.6 - List Maker
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver (goodreads author) (4*) - 7/26/10
While the concept of this book was very thought provoking, I would not say this is a book that everyone should read, especially those who do not like YA. This book had a very high school feel to it, which I had some difficulty with, but the life lessons demonstrated were quite powerful. I really enjoyed it, but it is not for everyone.

There was a time in nearly every child's life where they believed in the tooth fairy...and so to celebrate this childhood icon August 22 has been named National Tooth Fairy Day.
In honor of the tooth fairy, read one or more books (totaling at least 400 pages) of fairy tales, books based on traditional fairy tales (EXAMPLE: Snow White And Rose Red by Patricia C. Wrede), or adult or YA books specifically about the tooth fairy (EXAMPLE: The Tooth Fairy: A Novel by Graham Joyce
Black Pearls - A faeire Strand by Louise Hawes
The Fairy's Ring - Jane Yolen
The Field Guide - Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi

Pick one of the following swim suit styles to fit your reading type.
A. Tank Suit - Read 1 book of at least 850 pages.
B. Bikini - Read 2 books totaling at least 850 pages and first published in 1946 (date of first named bikini) or later.
C. Tankini - Read 850 pages of book(s) published in last 5 years.
D. Victorian (The kind with sleeves, skirt & bloomers.) - Read 850 pages of book(s) published between 1834 and 1901
I picked Tankini:
THe Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (2006) by Kate DiCamillo 200 pages
Jane Austen Ruined My Life - Beth Padillo (2009) 320 pages
The Lost Queen - Frewin Jones (2007) 352 pages
Total pages 872

5.4 - Lesser Known Awards
We all know the big names in book awards (Pulitzer, Man Booker, Hugo, Newbery etc.) but there are a lot of lesser known book awards out there and lucky for us Goodreads has a list of them. Go to this link (Awards) and: Read a book found on the list of winners and nominees for an award you had previously never heard of. (From the foreign language awards you may read a translation if it is available)
Will Eisner Award (Best Publication Tween/Teen) Nominee

15.8 - "Double, Double, Toil and Trouble..."
You might need to do a little toiling for this task but I don't think you will have too much trouble. On August 7,1606 William Shakespeare's Macbeth was performed publicly for the first time (at the Great Hall at Hampton Court). In honor of this event and this famous line you will need to read 2 books that...
A. Have the same title but are written by different authors (EXAMPLE: Twilight AND Twilight) OR
B. Have very similar covers...(EXAMPLE: & )
I read --Cemetery Dance by Preston and Child
Hippopotamus Pool by Peters

5.9 Things Fall Apart, which I read in coffee shops, fast food restaurant, and at the gas station)
10.3 The Lightning Thief, which was being read by Barbara in the US the same time I was on. I did not like it.
20.4 The Iron King -- this is my sixth challenge (anniversary Iron)
30.2 (repost) Half Magic and The Owl Service, I recommended Half Magic to my 10 yr old cousin. I would not recommend the owl service to anyone

I completed 15.9 He Who Knows Others Is Wise. I read "The Outcasts" by L.S. Mathews. I see myself as an outcast because I never really fit in. The characters in the book have their own clique and they end up in an alternate world but I really don't see them as outcasts.

Well, I may be nearing the end of my points this challenge as my next books don't seem to fit in anywhere. So here goes:
Task 5.5 (Dropping Names) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
Task 10.10 (Great Minds Think Alike) At the time, my latest 5 star book was "Beezus and Ramona", also given 5 stars by Shannon (on page 5 of the 5 star list), who gave 5 stars to The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. I loved this book!
Task 20.6 (List Maker) I read It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas, which was over 300 pages. I can't say that it should go on a general "must read" list, but if you are looking for some fun historical romance, you can't go wrong with this Wallflower series by Lisa Kleypas. They are fun, fluffy reads. Perfect for summer! So I'd put it on my "happy 'must' reads" list!

10.6 Stand up for your rights.....
Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood by Fatima Mernissi
3 stars
Ms. Mernissi was born into a harem in 1940s Morocco. I learned a great deal from this lovely memoir, which focused on the small, yet significant, female rebellions against the traditional Muslim customs that often made them feel like prisoners. Women of means were not allowed contact with the world outside of their homes. There were actual gatekeepers to keep women inside. These ladies, however, were extremely resourceful in learning how to keep connected. They rigged radios, when their husbands were not home, to listen to the world news. They climbed to high rooftops to observe nature and their surroundings.I was surprised to discover that women, with less money, had much more freedom, because they were often allowed more schooling and a chance to work outside the home to earn extra needed income.

I read The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
I'd never heard of the book, but was pleasantly suprised and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the Flavia de Luce series.
Total Points: 25

The dish my husband and I take places to share a lot is fried rice. I think what makes our recipe stand out is that everyone else tends to make casseroles! Plus, a lot of people are intimidated by Asian cooking (weird ingredients, etc.), so they don't often have home-cooked Asian food. The cookbook I red for part D is an easy Asian food cookbook. I copied down a bunch of the recipes—they looked really good. For part B, I read Hot Lunch, which has 4 whole recipes included in the book, including one for cream puffs... yum! That should bring me up to 555 pts.

30.5: Virtual Block Party
Part A: Food in the title: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
Part C: Food-Related Non-fiction: Women, Food, and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything by Geneen Roth. This is a non-fiction book about creating a better relationship with food by focusing on the causes of overeating instead of blaming the food all the time.
My contribution to the party therefore, will be a delicious organic blueberry pie with a lattice crust. The pie will be sweet and delicious, but only take a piece if you really need it! Now that's the hard part!
After this original post I had 55 points, then I posted a 5 point task, so my total should now be 60.

30.2: For the Children
Part A: Children's classic book: Falling Up by Shel Silverstein. I read part of this book with my niece who is 4 and really had her mind on other things, and the rest on my own. I hope one day she enjoys it as much as I do. I also plan on my own children reading it when and if I have children.
Part B: Child is the main character: Beyond the Grave by Jude Watson. The main characters in this book are Dan and Amy Cahill who are under the care of their Au Pair Nelle.

As usual this was a great book. I am really enjoying the ongoing dramas in the lives of these teens. I can't wait for the next one to come out.
50 - Tarot
Past - Bones of Faerie by Janni Lee Simner
Present - The Journal of Curious Letters by James Dashner
Future - The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
Bones of Faerie was a very interesting book. It was dark in places and suspenseful. One of those stories that makes you wonder what is going to happen next. I really did like this book and would like to read more by this author.
The Journal of Curious Letters was a really good book. I enjoyed the story a great deal. I like the differences in the characters. Not just the same old tired teenager attitudes. And the riddles and puzzles made it very interesting.
I really liked The Art of Racing in the Rain. It was an interesting way to write it, from the dog's point of view. I liked the characters I was supposed to like and disliked the ones I was supposed to dislike. Good book.
Janni Lee Simner, James Dashner and Garth Stein are all GoodReads Authors.
With an additional 60 points, my total points are 165.

Listened to The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier on audiobook.
I did not care for the ending of this book.

I chose this book to read for the discrimination task because the characters in the book were discriminated against because of their religion. This book was a completely stunning read....

Task 10.6 I read the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, where the Greasers face discrimination. Love this book and I am looking forward to working on it with students this upcoming school year.

15.1 Wedding Bells Are Ringing
New/Blue- Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster
This book has been on my TBR list for years. Loved it! My kids told me to read it and I am passing it on to my Mother In Law because we share so many "word" stories and jokes. The Phantom Tollbooth
Old/Borrowed- I was born in 1955 so I chose The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. This is hard boiled detective, the stuff my dad loved. I am so excited because as much as I watch TCM I have avoided this Bogart/Bacall movie till I read the book and it will be on this weekend (fitting as I read Bacall's bio earlier this challenge!) The Big Sleep
25.9 It's The Swimsuit Edition - I chose Tanktini (published in past 5 years, 850 pages) Total - 966 pages

25.5 Helen's Task - Share The Summer Love
A/C My favorite genre is Historical Fiction because it makes the history come alive to me. It takes the big picture and shows how the smallest details of events change the lives of each and everyone of us.
The Coffee Trader
Coffee Trader by David Liss is a perfect example of this. A wonderful tale of a Jewish immigrant to Amsterdam and his quest to make a fortune, while working around "the system" that is still the Stock Market as we know it. Our market scandals today are nothing new, manipulations have been going on for centuries! I cannot say that I liked any of the characters, but they certainly held my attention and made me love and appreciate my morning buzz and be thankful that I do not chew on beans to get that buzz! Liss was looking to write about the generation of a new "product" and had considered chocolate before he stumbled onto the coffee story. Wonderful!
B/C My 2nd favorite genre is Cozy Mysteries. I value a good brain, and the power of deduction, I love a story that is more character driven than action and cozy does that for me.
The Merlot Murders
Merlot Murders by Ellen Crosby is the perfect summer read for me. This is book 1 in the Wine Country Murders and takes place quite close to where I live. This book was a great primer on wine making and in Virginia particularly and very visual. History is also an central to the storyline and also topical. The discussions of land preservation vs growth is central in this book and something we read about and agonize over every day in the DC suburbs. Lucie is a young girl that has flaws and a flawed family and she agonizes and grows as she solves the murder of her godfather and tries to understand her siblings. The end is not tied up in a pretty bow, we will see her continue to grow her farm and relationship with her winemaker in the next 5 books in the series. Loved it!
