5.5 - Dropping Names -- for this I read Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson

15.3 - Books And Blogs -- for this I read Marked the first book in the House of Night series by P.C. Cast.

This is the blog: http://www.alisonsbookmarks.com/2008/...
This book scared me at first. I have been reading some fairly deep stuff and I just jumped into the YA genre again. It started out so lame that I was afraid I would have to give the books back to my best friend and apologize for thinking they were crap. However, I kept reading and I actually enjoyed this book enough to pick up the second one. I like the Wicca twist on the Vampyres.
I believe this brings my (Kathleen US) point total to 105.

I read "One Good Dog" by Susan Wilson.
This book is a must read for people who love dogs. It gave the dogs in this book a real voice and it was so funny and sad. I actually shed a tear, which seems to happen when animals are involved.

10.4: I rolled 2, 2, 3 so I read:
Kissed by an Angel.
The first book in this trilogy, Kissed by an Angel, is the one I read and it is 230 pgs.

I am a 4 and so is Goodreads author Susan Wittig Albert
I read Bloodroot.
The characteristics of a 4 are foundation, order, service, struggle against limits, and steady growth.
I read J.D. Robb's Memory in Death. As a police officer Lt. Eve Dallas stands for order and service. This is one character who shows steady growth while struggling with the limits the law sometimes puts on true justice.

For Task 20.4 (wedding gifts), this is my 3rd challenge, so my choices were leather or glass. I chose: SHOES! and read Shoes To Die For by Laura Levine.
For Task 25.9 (swimsuit), I went with Tankini and read The Map of True Places by Brunonia Barry (published 2010 -- 432 pages) and Curse of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz (published 2008 -- 512 pages) for a total of 944 pages read of books published in the last five years. **Lisa Lutz is a GOODREADS AUTHOR**
For Task 30.2 (For the Children), I rescued Ben and Me: An Astonishing Life of Benjamin Franklin by His Good Mouse Amos by Robert Lawson from a pile of books my daughter was planning to donate to the library. I LOVED it and now she is actually reading it. Very cute! (this was on the list linked in the task help thread).
For part B I read A Dream Come True by Elizabeth Lindsay to my daughter. A child is the main character (I believe she is 9 years old??).

Completed 15.9 by reading Miss Understanding. I chose this book because I always try to understand others and give them the benefit of the doubt. The title did not refer to the main character but to the magazine she is the editor of. I am nothing like this character who is extremely feminist (to the point of not caring about how she looks) and kind of paranoid to the extreme about health matters. Also, she is a little oblivious (don't want to say why in case you want to read this, although I would recommend you didn't.

I read Nothing But Trouble...It is featured on the blog http://goodbadandunread.com/2010/05/1...
This book was ok. The storyline was a bit predictable, but it did have a good story and lots of steamy love scenes! The basic storyline is an injured hockey player meets an out of work actress who is now his personal assistant. He is mad at the world and doesn't want her help; she is stubborn and out to prove that he can be more than he is. It's a great book for the beach or the pool.

Déjà Dead
This book is a must-read because it is clever, well-written, funny at times, and has a heroine who is at times afraid, but puts that fear behind her in order to save the people she cares about. I am excited to read the rest of her books now!
This is my first entry so I hope I did everything I needed in order to get the points!

Welcome, Liz!
Liz is a popular name here -- we have three others playing, too. Is LIZ AZ (US) okay for your Readerboard name? Your profile only has "The United States" but a state works better. Please include your Readerboard name at the top of your posts.
Your post does include all the requirements for task 20.6.
It's okay to copy the task itself in your post or you can include a short title (1-5 words). For 20.6, "List Maker" would be fine. It's good to include more than just the task number because we can figure out which task it is if there's a typo.

I'm a big John Wyndham fan from way back but haven't read any of his books in years. Thanks, Cynthia, for this task!
I think I liked this story more now than the first time I read it. John Wyndham sci-fi stories are the perfect post-apocolyptic stories.
His characters are real, as are their reactions to their new predicaments, the situations they find themselves in are real (or would be real if they were to ever happen), there's always a strange "something" to give a twist (in this case, the Triffids). Always, Wyndham's books are hopeful, giving the humans who survive the opportunity to rebuild.
Now I want to reread the rest of Wyndham's books!

I read A Day at ElBulli by Adria Ferran and Pizza: 50 Traditional & Alternative recipes for the Oven & Grill by Dwayne Ridgaway.

15.9 - “He Who Knows Others Is Wise. He Who Knows Himself Is Enlightened.” - Lao Tzu: The Quiet American by Graham Greene. Ok, this is a little bit boring to use this as a description of myself, but I am American and I'm quiet for the most part. I used to be quieter and shyer but like many people when they grow up I am not as shy. But, I would still say I'm somewhat quiet.
Ok, that is how the title relates to me, but as to the character that the title is about, I do not think I have much in common with him. The main character, Fowler, is an older, somewhat cynical, news journalist in Vietnam during the 50's when the French colonialists were at war with the Vietnamese. The character that the title refers to is Pyle, the young American diplomat who comes with a cover of being an economic aid, but in reality is meddling in the politics. He also steals away Fowler's native girl with promises of marriage. I do not quite understand the history and I might be missing clues that he is really CIA maybe, but, either way, I don't think I'll be moving to another country in the middle of war and meddling with the power structure and handing out bomb making material. Nor will I be falling in love with local women! I don't think my husband would be too happy if that happened!
Good book though. I had tried to start it earlier this year but for some reason put it down. I'm glad I picked it up again.

The Hunger Games by Collins
I too loved this book. I love smart girl books, beats the hell out of Nancy Drew. The repetition is reflective of the age of the protagonist and likely not an error on the part of the author. The concept is so Shirley Jackson meets Mad Max(ine) with a little Truman Show. Oh heck, I'm too old! LOL

15.3 - books and blogs - The Titan's Curse - reviewed on Inkscrawl at http://inkscrawl.blogspot.com/2007/06...
My Review: I adore Percy Jackson! I love this book (and the whole series) for the way elements of Greek mythology are woven into the stories and updated to reflect the times but the memorable characters, lessons, etc. stay the same. Percy is a nuanced character who grows through the series and Rick Riordan has a real sense of humor throughout. This book contains a good mix of awkward-teenage-boy drama, wit, and monster-battling.
15.4 - numbers - Pretties by Scott Westerfeld (who is a 5, as am I) and The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan. The main character (actually most of the primary characters!) shows the characteristics of a 5 - visionary, adventure, freedom - because although they're teenagers they set out on quests and adventures to save the world and certainly have a lot of freedom to do so (I am beginning to wonder about Percy's mom...I know he's a demigod, but still!)
20.7 - from a villain's POV - We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson - can't say too much without giving away the good parts but this is definitely from the villain's POV!
25.1 - july 4th task - Shutter Island - main character is retired military and

To Kill a Mockingbird 50th Anniversary by Harper Lee
What can I say! Of course this is a must-read, as all you Americans who had to read it at school well know. But I'm English and was 9 years old when this book was first published, and it's taken me until now to get round to reading it, in its 50th Anniversary Edition!
I saw the film (reluctantly) last year and was surprised by it - I knew nothing about the book before.
As soon as I started to read I knew I was going to love it because of the beautiful style of the writing.
I think what makes the book a MUST READ is the way the prejudices against people who are different because of colour, class, lifestyle or personality are woven into a story of the children's everyday activities, and we are encouraged to address the issues as their father teaches them how he wants them to treat the people they encounter as they go through life. I think it was a wonderful idea to write from a child's viewpoint because that gave Harper Lee the opportunity to approach the social issues head on through the innocent and uncompromising eyes of a child, and to explain them in the simple and honest words of her father. I believe the book is still as relevant today as it was 50 years ago; we still have our deeply held prejudices, and the advice to put oneself in a person's shoes before judging them is something we should all remember.
I seldom re-read books, but I believe this is one that I will.

I just finished Task 20.5 (Library Loves). I read American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld. The main character Alice is an elementary school librarian who eventually finds herself as the First Lady of the United States.

Part A: I read Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. The majority of this book takes place in Ethiopia. I loved this book-it's over 600 pages, but it was wonderful.
Part B: I read The Man from Beijing by Henning Mankell. It was translated from Swedish. It reminded me a little of bit of Steig Larssen's books, but not quite as good.
Brings me to 220 points.
And I think that "Cutting For Stone" qualifies me for a book over 500 pages.

I was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease, so I picked up a book to learn more about it. I read The Gluten Connection: How Gluten Sensitivity May Be Sabotaging Your Health--And What You Can Do to Take Control Nowby Shari Lieberman.

Just completed task 30.4!
I read Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell. I really like Kay Scarpetta and have read some of the books in the series before this but out of order. I am going to go back to the beginning and read them in order.
I also read Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsey and I loved it, but have to admit I like the TV series even more! There would be no TV series without the book though, so I must give credit to Lindsey for coming up with such an amazing and different spin on the whole serial killer thing.
As a result of this challenge, I now have about 4 series of books I want to read! I am going to be taking off for the Fall, I think. It would be impossibly hard to get 4 series into a challenge!
