Sir Apropos of Nothing by Peter David and The Realm of Possibility by David Levithan

Both are incredible books. Sir Apropos of Nothing is to fantasy novels what Avenue Q is to Sesame Street--though I could never in good conscience recommend it to my middle schoolers, anyone here who loves fantasy should read it. The Realm of Possibility is brilliant and had me in tears at the end.

OK, going to post some of my own now (and boy do I feel the pressure to not screw anything up, LOL!)

5.1 - Heat Wave
I read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling.

10.6 - Stand Up For Your Rights
I read Shut Out by Howard Bryant.
The focus of the book was racial discrimination in Boston and by the Boston Red Sox, although, considering many of his examples, it would have been more accurate to characterize it as discrimination in baseball and in the country.

10.7 - I Think We Can Handle The Truth
July 7th is Tell The Truth Day - In honor of this event read a book of non-fiction written by an author who also writes fiction
I read The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town by John Grisham.
It was interesting to see Grisham at work when he had to work with the story as it was - particularly interesting to see his outrage at this case coming through (since he can't really act personally outraged when he's writing his own fiction).

25.9 - Donna Jo's Task - It's Time For The Swim Suit Edition.
I went with A. Tank Suit and read The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg by (guess who?) Deborah Eisenberg 970 pages!!!

This was the first book I won from Goodreads, and it taught me to pay a little more attention to the books I enter to win. This was a compilation of 4 books of short stories, and it was a little more than I wanted to read of her short stories!

This qualifies for the 750+ page big book ticket.

Cindie | 1836 comments 15.1 - Wedding Bells Are Ringing
June is one of the most popular months for weddings and weddings as we all know are full of traditions. One of the most commonly followed of those traditions is for the bride to have "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, and Something Blue" on her wedding day. To honor that tradition...

A. OLD - Read an old book (to qualify as an old book it must have been published before you were born).
AND
B. NEW - Read a book written by a new author i.e. a book by an author you haven't read previously.

BORROWED - One of the books above must be borrowed (from the library, from a friend or family member etc.)
BLUE - And the other book must either have a blue cover or the word blue in the title.

THis is not a reposting but a correction for my post 1600

I read The Chosen by Chaim Potok, published in 1967 before I was born. This is old. I borrowed it from a friend

I also read CHosen: The Secret Diaries of Queen Esther by Ginger Garrett. She is new to me -- I had never read her before. THis cover is quite blue Chosen The Lost Diaries of Queen Esther 480-465 BC by Ginger Garrett

this takes me to: 180 (previous) + 15 (this post) plus 30 from posting task 30.2 for the Children = 225

My dish will be garlic bread (I am not much of a cook) : Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise by Ruth Reichl. I guess my recepie stands out because the garlic bread (or rather garlic knots I make) are delicious and crazy easy to make and you can easily eat a lot of them! They also have parmesan cheese on them which makes them even better!

Rebecca (rebeccama) Task 30.5 Virtual Block Party
Part A- A book with food in the title, I read Chocolat by Joanne Harris
Part B- A novel with recipes, I read Peach Cobbler Murder by Joanne Fluke

For the block party, I'm going to bring Kielbasa, zucchini and squash. This recipe is fantastic for a summer party, being made with the seasonally fresh veggies (depending on what's available I sometimes throw in tomato chunks and fresh garlic as well). It is very juicy and the flavors blend together nicely for a unique but very yummy taste.

25.4 - Nicole OH's Task - Happy Birthday to Me!
In honor of my (Nicole's) July 10th birthday:
A. Read a book by a writer who is a Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Lawrence Watt-Evans was born on July 06, 1954; I read his book The Misenchanted Sword (1985) (Mass Market Paperback, 304 pages) 5* I loved the hero’s everyday-man’s reaction to the events of the novel.
AND
B. Read a book that has a NOUN in the title. This noun MUST appear on page 31 of your Part A book. On page 31 was this sentence:
“With a sudden roar, the fire leaped up and engulfed wood and jar alike; a second later the wood was burning steadily and naturally, the water beginning to steam slightly.”
I took the word “wood” and read: Mythago Wood (1984) by Robert Holdstock (Paperback, 336 pages) This novel won several awards, but I don’t really get why, it was OK but only OK. 2*

25.5-Helen's Task-Share the Summer Love

I hope this works. Someone please tell me if it doesn't.

A. Contemporary Adult Romance- Vision in White (Bride Quartet, #1) by Nora Roberts Vision in White by Nora Roberts 3*
B. Fairy Tales and Retellings- Violet Eyes A Retelling of the "Princess and the Pea" (Once Upon a Time) by Debbie Viguié Violet Eyes: A Retelling of the "Princess and the Pea" by Debbie Viguie 3*
C. What can I say I am a hopeless romantic! I love to read Contemporary Adult Romance because even though I know that it will not always come true, these type of stories are usually the type that usually are more realistic. Fairy Tales and Retellings...I think I love this these books are the type of books that will never happen but are the ones where you always dream of as a little girl. Plus one of my favorites as a child was Cinderella (Disney movie) and have grown up loving every version that could possibly be thought of.

I thought that Vision in White was a good book. It definitely made me think twice about a guy who can read...I fell in love with the characters of the quartet of girls and the leading male. (Even though I would never get with a guy like him.) This book made me wish that I had friends like these girls and also appreciate my mother.

Violet Eyes was a cute and sweet story. I was a very easy read. (Probably because it is a YA novel.) I had never heard of this fairy tale but it was definitely cute. I wouldn't consider it the best book I have ever read but it was definitely a good book that I might read again.

I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I'm glad I finally read this since I've seen the tv series a trillion times. It was very funny and I'll probably read the rest of them.

10.7 - I Think We Can Handle The Truth
I read In Cold Blood which I really enjoyed. I thought it was well written and engaging.

10.9 - “You Cannot Open A Book Without Learning Something.” - Confucius
I wanted to learn about effective communication so I chose option A and read Men are from Earth, Women are from Earth: A Guide to Winning Cooperation from Your Spouse. The skills the author talks about would probably be useful but I had a huge problem with the way the author wrote the whole thing. He called certain behaviour 'stupid', 'crazy', 'nuts' etc., was being sarcastic and making assumptions about behaviour. I also didn't like his examples and disagreed with some of his theories.

15.2 - Stars And Stripes Forever
A - I read The Kingdom of Ohio which I just picked up randomly in the library because it fit this task. I really enjoyed it though.
AND
B - I read Pretty Little Liars which takes place in Pennsylvania.

15.8 - "Double, Double, Toil and Trouble..."
I chose option A and read Missing by Karin Alvtegen
AND Missing by Mary Stanley. I preferred this one.

30.1 - Ms Anderson's Task - Birthdays and Birthmonths
I was born in May so read 102 Facts and Photos About Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and Epcot for the topic 'amusement parks'
AND
I was born on Friday so I read Effigy for the genre 'western'. Both of these were approved in the help thread.

30.4 - Cheryl TX's Task - The Science Of Crime
I read The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver
AND
In the Woods by Tana French.

Just completed 20.6 by reading Jennifer Weiner's latest, Fly Away Home: A Novel. This is probably a cop-out answer, but I would only call the book a must-read for die hard fans such as myself. I read every book she writes! However, for an all-time must list, I would not choose this book. It didn't have anything about it that made it extraordinary. The change I would like to see here in Illinois is the way the state is attempting to balance it's budget. There has to be a way to keep schools, libraries and police departments funded.

I most definitely would NOT have given pay raises to government officials or extended tax breaks to wealthy companies, that money would help deal with the funding issues. I would also work to increase enforcement of the tax codes to make sure everyone in the State is paying their fair share.

Cindie | 1836 comments 25.5 - Helen's Task - Share the Summer Love
For all us booklovers, summer is a great time of year to relax with our favorite reads. In this task, share your love of your favorites with us. Read two (2) books:

A. One from your favorite genre/type.
B. One from your second favorite genre/type.
C. Write a short review for each and an explanation of why your like that genre/type.

A. My very favorite genre is historical fiction. I read Wolf Hall Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel I loved it an highly recommend it to anyone who likes historical fiction in general and Tudor era in particular. Even though the title is the name of the family estate of the Seymour family, this book really follows the life (nearly to the end) of Thomas Cromwell. I found it very evocative of the time (not that I am that old, haha) and absorbing. I really got lost in it -- and found myself frequently thinking of it during the day when I was not reading it.

B. My second favorite genre is not that different -- I like Tudor history, actual history. I fell in love with this when I was in college, during finals, ironically. I read The Lady in the Tower The Lady in the Tower by Alison Weir This is about the fall of Anne Boleyn. Alison Weir (along with Antonia Frasier) is one of my very favorite authors of histories of this time period. She may be the first one I ever read, actually. This was quite good, and she explained in the intro that Anne Boleyn was the woman who got her interested in this time period to begin with. I have read a lot about this (I thought) but this book was a totally different take on it. I do not want to give it away here, but I must say, this book reinforces that supposed "facts" and "History" is all about the teller and the selection of facts he/she chooses to tell. Another great read!

Summer in my (DLM Rose's) neighborhood means potluck barbecues where each family brings a dish to share.
Identify your signature dish - it can be a food or beverage (someone needs to bring the margaritas!)
Choose 2:

B. Read a novel with recipes
The Spice Box by Lou Jane Temple

C. Read a food-related non-fiction book (non-cookbook).
Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain

I'm bringing broccoli, chickpea & tomato salad. This dish has been a hit wherever I've taken it. I think it stands out because it's got a great combination of textures and because it's cool and refreshing, perfect for summer. I'll post the recipe in the specially-devoted thread.

PJ and I have been trying to figure out some ways to try to minimize errors in the readerboard. I know it's frustrating for you when your points are not accurate, or you don't see the big books or goodreads authors you've claimed. After spending the last few days on this, I am completely in awe of the job Cynthia has been doing. We're having to figure out a lot as we go, and I know this hasn't been perfect.

So, we're asking for your help. If everyone would follow these guidelines, it might help.

1. If your goodreads name (the one that shows up when you post on these boards) and your readerboard name are not exactly alike, you MUST include your readerboard name at the top of the post. This will help to minimize errors, and will cut down on the amount of detective work needed to match up posts and readerboard names.
2. It would be best if you only list newly completed tasks - do not include previously completed tasks and partially completed tasks. If you want to include this extra information, list the newly completed tasks separately, and indicate clearly that they are the new ones.
3. It's fine to include more than one completed task in a post. If you do include more than one task , put them in numerical sequence, rather than jumping around.
4. You must include either a link to the book or the title and author of the book. This was stated at the beginning of this thread, when Cynthia opened it up for posting. (see post #1 in this thread)
5. Before posting, please re-read the task requirements and then re-read your post to make sure you've done everything the task requires - this seems to be a particular problem with the tasks that require some sort of write-up. Be sure to look at the list PJ posted in the new folder for Extra Task Requirements in the TASK HELP SECTION - it's a great summary of what you need to do for each task in addition to reading the book(s). http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...
6. If you want to claim a Goodreads author or a Big Books ticket, please say so in your post. And keep in mind the rules for Big Book tickets - you can only claim once for a book over 500 pages, once for a book over 750 pages and once for a book over 1000 pages. If you read 6 books that are 500-749 pages, you still just get 1 Big Books ticket.

Thanks so much for your help in this!

Deana Pittman Task 20.1--ICE CREAM

I love chocolate ice cream (well, actually, chocolate anything!)

For this task, I read Like Water for Chocolate. Personally, this book did not live up to my expectations, but it was an interesting read, nonetheless.

REPOST of Post 1156:

For 25.5: My two favorite genres are Post-Apocolyptic and Legal Fiction.

For the first, I read One Second After by William R. Forstchen. In this book, a small Carolina town deals with the first year following an EMP. It was interesting, and really really scary (in a: my goodness, this could so easily happen! kind of way). The author clearly had political reasons for writing this book (and the "hero" is so obviously the writer that it is a bit painful), but overall I thought it was interesting and a good read.

For the second, I read The Paper Chase by John Jay Osborn, Jr. I somehow missed reading this when I went to law school. It was an interesting story about a man in his first year at Harvard Law. It actually seems pretty accurate, based on people I know who went to Harvard in the early '90s. My law school was populated with more people who actually loved law, so it wasn't as bleak! It was a good story, but not as good as One L: The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School.

This was a terrific TV series several years ago. If you liked the book, you might see if it is on DVD anywhere.

The edition I read of the book was an anniversary edition, so the author discusses the series!

10.10 Great Minds Think Alike
Wait Till Helen Comes: A Ghost Story

The last book I gave 5 stars to was Sir Apropos of Nothing. I pulled Caroline from the first page of 5-star reviews for that book (since there weren't six pages) and chose Wait Till Helen Comes from her list. Definitely not worth the 5 stars she gave it...

20.2 A Trip to the Past
The Strongbow Saga, Book One: Viking Warrior

This book takes place in Denmark in 845 AD (well, it wasn't Denmark yet, but you know what I mean). Stupid library not having any sagas...

Just finished 10.7 "I Think We Can Handle the Truth"- I read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. The book was about the murders of the Clutter family and the apprehension of the murderers. I thought it was a great book. It does a great job getting into the minds of everyone who was involved.

25.5 Share the Summer Love: Favorite Genre #1: suspense/thriller/legal: Innocent by Scott Turow. I enjoy this genre because I like the pace of reading a "page-turner." The story usually moves along quickly and I like it when a book is hard to put down. This particular novel was okay. The story moved along but did not hold my interest as much as Presumed Innocent.

Favorite Genre #2: Young Adult Fiction: Hate List by Jennifer Brown (goodreads author). I enjoy this genre because YA fiction is usually a more succinct version of adult fiction without losing the story line if written well. I feel as though the good YA novels are clearly told and draw you into the story line and the characters quicker than most adult fiction. I gave this book 5 stars and would highly recommend it. There is so much real emotion in the characters that you find yourself taking many different sides of a controversial topic.
