Looks great, Kellee!
I found this website http://www.brownielocks.com/month2.html for listings of odd holidays. Each month I'll go through and pick a few that sound like they would make good book reading topics and post a poll so people can vote. These are only US holidays, though, so if you know about other holidays throughout the world (traditional holidays, too, I'm sad to say I don't know much about world holidays) please let me know by the 20th of the preceding month and I will add them to the list. Thanks!

You can start anytime Amy. The Holocaust book would have to be read this month to count though because the task didn't begin until May 1st.
You can do older tasks after the fact (so if you've read a book with the word "Dead" in the title anytime in Nov. 2009 or after it will count)
Make any sense?? lol...

Yes, Amy, find the posting for the month and put your completed book(s) there. It would be helpful to post your points earned for that task along with your total points for the entire challenge at that time, too. You only have to list page counts or other info if the task asks for it (for example, Dr. Suess month we counted by page count). I believe, though, that we only allow 1 after the fact book to count. At least that's how Linda was doing it, not that we have to hold to that rule. What do you think Kellee?

Jennifer, I just yanked this off of another post:
Linda Grace wrote: "Cathy, that is a good one. However, we were only allowing multiple books to count if they were read within the challenge month. After-the-fact reads should only be done if you didn't get a chance..."
So yep, only one after the fact counts. I didn't know that until right now! I just posted multiples yesterday...oops! Hopefully you and Kellee can sort out my mess :-/

That sounds wonderful Jennifer :)
If you could send me the list before you post the poll, that way I can tell you if there is any other holidays I know.
This is pretty exciting! :)

During the month, the first book read is worth 2 points while each additional book is worth 1.

Completed Tasks: May
Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow by Susan Campbell Bartoletti 5/3/10
Points Earned: 2
Total Points: 27
This will help me until I get a handle on this.

Sorry to confuse you! I deleted the posts because I was playing outside of the rules. :-(
I'm not sure whether my December ones were added in or not...

and Message 21 Amy- You'll be Amy (dogs)
Is that okay?
And Amy (flowers) you have no points yet and Amy (dogs) you have 4, correct?

I like Amy-boxer. Makes you sound tough :)
I'll try to get a list up by the weekend. If anyone else knows of any weird or odd holidays celebrated in the month of July that would make for some good reading topics, please post them here and I'll include them. Thanks!

Some good holidays, there, Heather, thanks!
Nick, what I do is look up the word and then click on books that look like they might be YA and see if people have shelved them as such. Not very efficient, but it gets me looking through lots of good books. :)
Also, your library may have a way to search like that, mine does.

You can search for lists that are based around that topic. Go to explore-books- then lists. I don't know if you will find anything though... I haven't looked.

Welcome!!
I will check the other threads and update the score board when I get home :)

As far as I know, No. What I do is go to the Young-Adult shelf. The I go to my browser's menu and select "find on this page". I then go through each page like that. Like Jennifer W's method, not very efficient, but I don't have to scroll through a bunch of titles.
OK... This is the list I've come up with for possible holidays celebrated.
-Dog/yellow pig/ cow appreciation (pet) day
-Father/Daughter take a walk day
-Gorgeous grandma/cousin/parents day (also family reunion month)
-Child-centered divorce month
-Be Nice to New Jersey week
-4th of July/Bastille Day
-Sports Cliche week
-Canada Day
-Apollo 11 lift off day
-Amelia Earhart's Birthday
There, that's 10 possible choices. If anyone has any others, let me know. I'll get a poll up in a few days.

September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day
It's one of my favorite days of the year!!!:D
Hehe, I saw that Vicki, but I didn't know how well that would work for a book topic. Same with Cable TV month. I'll add Read-A-New book month (Sept or August, Kellee?) and Patriot Day.

Both September.
Cable TV I was thinking we'd have to read books that were made into TV shows or movies...

The rules from before still apply:
This is going to be a very easy-going challenge with only 1 task each month. The last week of every month, I will set up a poll with a list of celebrations for the next month and which ever one wins will be the task for that month.
In order to keep our group threads clean, I will create 1 thread for each month and everyone will be able to post which book they read for the task for that month and any thoughts they would like to share. Within each monthly thread, questions and comments regarding that month's celebration can be posted as well. This way we will have a clean thread at the beginning of each new month and will help eliminate repeat questions.
I do not have a requirement for page numbers on this challenge (unless stated in the task). Children's books are okay! Also, a question came up in a message to me whether I will allow more than one book to be counted. I will allow more than one book as long as they are read within the month for that task. These additional books will be another 1 point added to the score board. If you miss a month, you can read a book outside of the month, but only one book will count and it will be counted as 1 point.
Below, I will keep a running list of the monthly tasks for easy reference and a scoreboard (2 points for each task completed within the month, 1 point for any additional tasks completed within the month, and 1 point if the task is completed after-the-fact).
