Jenny Hilborne (jfhilborne) | 17 comments I plan to start listening to audi books, great way to while away a commute

message 602: by Lyn (new)

Lyn Davis (lynrdavis) | 1 comments I guess there aren't too many such as myself, who read dozens at a time.

I range from non-fiction (often research, as much as interest) and fiction (I read author friend's latest book, something I found by perusing or it being recommended, my children's reading material for school, and always something in my purse, by my favorite chair, and in each bathroom, er Executive Reading Room.

I jump back into the visualization of characters rapidly after beginning again.

My interest may change depending on my mood or what time of the day it is.

message 603: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I have three, actually two I an reading concurrently, True Grit and North and South.

message 604: by Christine (new)

Christine Lindsay (wwwchristinelindsaycom) I am a one fictional book reader at a time, however that doesn't include often reading 1 or 2 research books at the same time. I save the fictional reading as my treat for after I've done my research. Plus I carry a small book on the art of writing in my purse for when I'm stuck somewhere (like a doctor's office) and can use that time to learn.

message 605: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Fiction, I usually have three, so if I am reading one, and it is slow going, I will look at the second one. I used to be more disciplined and just read the one. but with the library requests that I make regularly, I need to read or not read the books that I have borrowed. And also the occasional movie that I rent as well.

message 606: by V.H. (new)

V.H. Folland (VHFolland) | 14 comments Normally one or two. While I'll have one in the house for reading, I've usually got something else light to read on the way to work that I can just leave in a bag.

message 607: by Henri (new)

Henri Moreaux (henrimoreaux) I usually read one at a time, however often I'll have two on the go and be reading a fiction book for leisure during the day and a heavy non-fiction later at night.

message 608: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Farrimond (mafarrimond) | 4 comments I usually have a few on the go. I have one in the bedroom, one in the lounge, one in the car and one I take to work.

message 609: by Norm (new)

Norm (normcowie) | 13 comments Now that I have a Kindle, I am reading a regular paper novel while alternating with a non-fiction title on Kindle.

message 610: by Charles (new)

Charles Blanchard | 28 comments I enjoy reading several books at a time, fiction of course, just a few pages at a time to get the most out of them. Books that I currently have on my night table are Stones of Summer, Ben-Hur, Volume 1 of Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, and Death with Interruptions by Jose Saramago.

message 611: by Paul (new)

Paul Clayton | 12 comments I try to limit my reading to one book at a time. I usually only read the one that's open in the room I happen to be in. :)

great point!!"

Laugh. At. Loud. so true ;D

message 614: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Dunbar | 4 comments I like to focus on one fiction book at a time (reading), and if it is an engaging book, I will read it within a day or two. Non-fiction is different, as I might jump from book to book, reading segments pertaining to my research for the novels I co-write.

message 615: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Toler (pdtoler) I usually have three to four books that I'm actively engaged with and another six or seven that I dip in and out of as the spirit moves me.

Rick-Founder JM CM BOOK CLUB | 7280 comments Mod
I have been reading quite alot of books now- I find that there are so many fine writers out there- so many are James Mason members! whose books go unnoticed due to lack of exposure- hoope this Group can help to rectify that!

message 617: by Carol (new)

Carol (peppersgirl) I usually read 3 books at a time. One Fiction or longer non-fiction book, One audio book and one Shorter non-fiction book such as a DIY or cookbook.

message 618: by Judy (new)

Judy (judygreeneyes) | 19 comments I used to always read one at a time, but with the technology available now, I can have one book on my Kindle and also be reading one while grocery shopping or driving on my ipod, so at least two all the time. Often 3 since I'll leave one in the bathroom (shhh!!)

message 619: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Kelly | 4 comments I usually like to give whatever I'm reading my undivided attention. So yeah, I usually only read one book at a time.

message 620: by [deleted user] (new)

Like Judy in message 641 said, now that I have a Kindle and a Nook I am usually reading two or three at a time. My ereaders go with me when I leave the house, and I get a lot of reading done im waiting rooms.

message 621: by Sean (new)

Sean Cronin | 49 comments I just read one at a time. It's a delicious end to every day - an hour tow with a good book.
While I can read several simultaneously, it seems to limit the emotional impact. As if I can only take in the emotional content of one book at a time.

message 622: by Jesse (new)

Jesse (jessejanereads) I usually have 2 actively going at any time. It's usually split between a home book and a work book.

I usually have 1 or 2 I'm passively reading. These are usually nonfiction collections of essays or factoids that can be read independently or several at a time and have the same impact. Since there's no narrative in between the various essays (or whatever), I won't be missing anything if I walk away for a month. One of my current passive books is Stupid History: Tales of Stupidity, Strangeness, and Mythconceptions Throughout the Ages.

message 623: by Sean (new)

Sean Cronin | 49 comments Love the title, "Stupid History..."

message 624: by [deleted user] (new)

Several books at a time, usually about 6. Very exciting. One in the bathroom, one in my purse, one in my car, two by the bed and one I carry around all the time. :)

message 625: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Me too. I just can't focus on only one at a time-I actually can follow several different books more easily. And I must carry at least 2, preferable 3 but very lightweight because, who knows what I might feel like reading?

message 626: by Robin (last edited Apr 22, 2011 03:12PM) (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I have been reading two, maybe three, depends if one is an easy read, like True Grit was. Never thought I would read another western themed one. I read one that was made into a movie with Warren Beatty in the lead, and Julie Christie, but the name escapes me. Having a very senior moment. The title was McCabe and Mrs. Miller. Never saw the movie.

message 627: by Gail (new)

Gail Baugniet | 16 comments Definitely multiple books for me. I'll read a chapter or two from a couple of books each morning after finishing the daily newspaper. Then I'll switch to something relevant to the mystery novel I'm currently writing or to my genealogy research. If I read something interesting in a blog, I may end up digging out a book on the subject (yesterday it was Birds of Hawaii.)

message 628: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I'm always reading at least three books simultaniously. I like one light read, perhaps a YA novel or chick lit, one book of more substantial literature, and one book on a subject that I'm interested in, like sharks, for instance.
Of course the most interesting one will get the most attention!

message 629: by Amalie (new)

Amalie Like Ashley up there I myself tend to read about three or four books concurrently. They usually consists of a classic, YA novel (my latest interest), book from my homeland or Asian and a non-fiction (subject matter changes.)

message 630: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (asfus) | 92 comments Technically I am reading two books at the same time though one of them I will probably give up and it will not be Grave Peril (The Dresden Files, #3) by Jim Butcher

message 631: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra Geckle (goodreadscomcassandrageckle) I read 1 book at a time...I like to stick with my book til the end..that way it has my undivided attention and I can become the character in the story.

message 632: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) okay then. I know that reading one is fine, but sometimes I need another one to read while the first is boring in some spots. I am reading The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, and A Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. Two polar opposites of books, but am finding Anne Frank book more enthralling.

message 633: by Norah (new)

Norah Wilson (norah_wilson) | 3 comments I used to be more of a multiple book reader, and had several books on the go in several physical locations. Now that I'm reading primarily from my Kindle, I tend to read one book straight ahead. Maybe it's that "percent done" line at the bottom. I'm a little compulsive about finishing what I start...

message 634: by Alex (new)

Alex Sinclair I tend to have several books on the go, but I try to pick different genres to fit my mood. The last couple I have read were very disappointing.

message 635: by Miss Asima (new)

Miss Asima (missasima) I used to be a one book at a time person because I had very little reading time. Now I read many books at a time. Sometimes probably too many. :D

message 636: by Tyler Banks (new)

Tyler Banks (capital_tea) | 9 comments find myself burrowing usually two to three books at any given time. My formula is 1 Novel and then one or two Graphic novels to suppliment my appetite.

message 637: by Alex (new)

Alex Sinclair lol, Tyler I am the same. A friend of a friend writes graphic novels so I get free books sent to me from time to time, which isn't so bad, lol.

message 638: by Tyler Banks (new)

Tyler Banks (capital_tea) | 9 comments Alex wrote: "lol, Tyler I am the same. A friend of a friend writes graphic novels so I get free books sent to me from time to time, which isn't so bad, lol."

ENVIOUS!!! I am to the point where I am filling up my second bookshelf... don't get me wrong, when your shelves are filled with great reads that you want to display to the world its Great, the problem is when the fact remains that it takes probably a couple of days to take down a Graphic when a novel is more a month long experience. the numbers catch up... also the Prices! I need to make more friends, that is what your comment says to me. I wonder if Frank Miller has a good Drinkin' Buddy? Applications? ;)

message 639: by Alex (new)

Alex Sinclair lol, that is really true. The graphic novels seem to involve a lot more work, but you can get through them so quickly. The problem is I do tend to like them more than novels, but unless you can get several volumes it is like a reading snack. If possible I would love to one day write one or have a novel turned into one, lol. Just so I can have it on my shelf!

Rick-Founder JM CM BOOK CLUB | 7280 comments Mod
I haven't read a graphic novel yet- but my interest is very piqued! Always loved comic books- and felt the art and writing was unfairly derided.

message 641: by Alex (new)

Alex Sinclair I think you have to find a good one to start with. One of my favourite graphic novels is Death Note, Volume 1: Boredom, which was made into three movies in Japan and kept the The Da Vinci Code from reaching number 1 in asia when it took the world by storm. The story is written so well that you end up routing for the bad guy. It is heavily influenced my writing style.

message 642: by Chaz (new)

Chaz Young (chazayoung) | 18 comments My kids love reading graphic novels and when Alex mentioned Death Note, I have heard that title around my house, though I have not read it.

I read one book at a time for fun, because I am always writing away on my books and reading books for research.

message 643: by Alex (new)

Alex Sinclair lol, Hi Chaz, if there was one story I wish I could have written it would have been Death Note. It is fast paced, it is dark, it is full of suspense, it is clever and scary without being bloody or gory. Very clever author.

message 644: by Chaz (new)

Chaz Young (chazayoung) | 18 comments I might have to check that out. My kids will fall over in disbelief!

message 645: by Alex (new)

Alex Sinclair lol, you would instantly become the worlds coolest mum!

message 646: by Chaz (new)

Chaz Young (chazayoung) | 18 comments Just in time for Mother's Day!

message 647: by Alex (new)

Alex Sinclair lol, it means you get the fancy chocolates.

message 648: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I am not remotely a 1 book at a time reader. It's my ideal, my goal.

Actually, my goal is to be a 3-4 book at a time reader. That sounds very manageable to me.

I'm like a 16-18 book at a time reader.

I love Death Note-my son is into it & so are my students. The movie is very good which is lucky for me since I've seen it 4 or 5 times with my son.

It's the only story of its kind that I know of in which the hero is autistic (or Asperger's-on the autistic spectrum anyway).

message 649: by Alex (new)

Alex Sinclair That is a really good point. I am hoping the U.S movies they make does Death Note justice.

message 650: by Jane (new)

Jane Hope | 8 comments For the most part I read one book at a time- when I retire (who knows what century that will be!) I will have the time to multi-read
