ARE YOU A ONE BOOK AT A TIME READER?

I tend to read 2 books at a time, but it's usually because I have so many I'm trying to read for the blog that it's just easier to have one on my nook and one paperback for just where ever I happen to be.

I read for escapism. I know I have found a new favorite book if it can make me lose interest in my surroundings and by how much I think about it when I'm not reading it. Reading more than one book at a time disrupts this flow. The few times I have tried one book got read and the other given up on.
I go through stages- reading alot of books by members as well as thrillers and historical fiction- fun togo from WASH DC 2011 to London 1831!
I usually read more than one book ar a time, but if I'm really interested in a book I read it until the end without reading other books in between. The book Memoirs of a Geisa has been on my currently reading list ever since I've been on Goodreads. I haven't actually been reading it since I own it. I usually just read it when I'm waiting for a book at the library or something like that.
I usually read one book at a time - I like to "lose myself" completely in the time or place that the book is set in so I would become very confused if I were hop from one book to another - the characters would get completely jumbled up in my head!! I am amazed by people who can have a number of books on the go at the same time!

I replied, "then how in the world did you make it through school, where that was always required? I guess the same way most of us manage to stay abreast of more than one TV show or balance our projects at work for that matter.
I believe a lot depends upon what we tell ourselves, the content of what we read and our interest level. I balance three books at a time. Some storylines pull me through quickly, others are slow reads only and still others ebbs and flows cannot be sustained for long periods of time.
Don't be amazed. You did it at some point in your life, I'm sure. Maybe you just don't want to do it again, which is understandable.
Several books at one time. Usually something current, something horror, something sci fi, something on my nook.
Several, because in my 1001 books quest, some of the reading on that list is heavy, so when I can't deal with the heavy ones, I switch over to lighter ones, ones I'm reading for me instead, to clear my mind.
I'm typically a two-fisted reader...a non-fiction, research book in one hand...an escapist, fictional reward in the other.
My TBR list is too big to look at any more ;-) I used to read one book at a time. But, lately I read two or three concurrently. Always have at least one fiction book going. If I'm reading a non-fiction, still have to be reading a fiction.
I use to be a one at a time girl. I used to feel like I was cheating on my book if I read more than one at a time, now I have 2 or 3 books going. I have an audio book going at work (I am new to audio, but it is going pretty good so far), then I am reading a hardback and will on occasion read a book on my Nook.

My list is way to big also and I always try to read all the books but I keep adding more books so it's never ending. I like to read more than one book at a time so I could shorten my list and also so I could have a variety of stories to think about.

I usually read multiple books at a time. Right now there are three that I go back to and in between I read other books.

nice Quartet there Vicky! sci-fi- do you read stand alones or series?

Like Karen above, I read multiple books at any given time, usually between 3-6. Now it's even easier with Kindle and other forms of reading like PC, IPhone etc :).There are just so many great books out there and not enough time to read them all :)
I usually have between 3 and 4 books going at the same time. One is always some type of mystery and the other is more of a "deep thinker" book which takes me awhile to get thru. It depends on my mood and how much time I have to read at that moment which book I pick up to read.
I can read two or more at a time if some are very light and comedic. M.C. Beaton's books would be an example of light reading for me.
i can only read one book at a time, but i usually have at least three or four writing projects on the go, (at the moment, dont laugh, i have six)
At the moment I am reading a 1200 page fantasy tome, slowly taking my time, and a young adult quick read on my ereader. Usually a one book at a time reader but so I like this. There's no hurry to finish the large book so I can read something else. And the lighter book is a nice break from the other's heavier subject matter.
when it comes to books and reading, I'm a complete whore. I can read 5 books at a time, but usually I read only 2-3 . one at home and one at university, during utterly boring lectures.

If I try to read more than one book at a time, I forget too much and have to keep going back to see who the characters are. Of course, it doesn't help any that I only get an hour or so a night to read anymore!
Oh, definitely not ... I like to have at least two text versions of books and a couple of audios on the go.I think of it as being the same thing as watching TV serials - like House, One and a Half Men, etc.
You must have more of your brain left than I do, Carly. My mind is scattered in too many directions anymore. My reading is one thing I can control, so I'm gonna stick to one at a time.
I can read 2 at a timeas long as one of them is a reference book for writing or a self help as well as my novel of the week.
I have difficulty maintaining attention & reading several books at a time actually sharpens my focus. At some point in a book, though, somewhere towards the middle-second half, I put all my attention on that book until I finish it.I know a book is perfect for me when that's all I want to read. But perfection is hard for me to find.
Kindle is changing me. I used to be a one-book guy, but now I'm reading one in paper (by the pool) and reading my Kindle at other times (not so very water resistant).Norm

sounds like a well thought out plan!!! Kindle's are no Mark Spitz's!

Kindle (on an iPad) is changing me too! I read everywhere now and every idle moment is filled with snatching a few pages of the book of the moment.
I read 2-3 at a time, although I've been up to as many as 6 and have at times been reading only one.

my three books going now are going...actually pretty well!

As busy as I am writing, exercising, working a 40 plus hour job, I seem to only be able to cope with one book at a time. Right now I'm into Free Fall.
I try to only read one book at a time, but lately so many books interest me. Plus I'm writing. I am currently in the middle of reading two completely different genre books.
I have read several books at a time, in several genres. There is a special book that I read on public transport and is often read at home on my laptop. I currently-read a thriller by Karin Slaughter, a contemporary-romance by Nora Roberts and a paranormal book by Cloe Neill.
I always used to read one book at a time but now I tend to have two or three on the go. That's usually because I am reading something for a book group, something that's maybe more of a classic so it's best taken slowly and then something lighter and more easily digestible.
I'm like Beatrix too, I have different books for different places - one that I'll read in the bath, one that I'll have in my handbag for whenever I'm travelling somewhere. I always like to have a book to hand. :)

Before my wife birthdayed me with a Kindle two Februaries ago, I would be reading one book and listening to an audio book during commutes and other times when I couldn't eyeball the words. Since becoming a Kindler, I can stay in the same story, using text-to-speech.Some of my Kindling friends tell me they cannot deal with the computer voice. In the same way I use my imagination to amplify a book to a level usually not matchable by its movie, I can imagine that the t2s voice (choice of male or female) is anyone ... Larry Olivier, Kate Hepburn, Kevin Spacey, Annette Benning, the voice in my head, or even James Mason. I choose to allow the computer voice to humorously endear itself to me when it erroneously pronounces mmmmm to indicate a delightful taste as em em em em em. Listening to my manuscript on my Kindle before publishing it at the Kindle Store caused me to abandon the name Cal for one of my characters. When his name occurred at the end of a sentence terminated with a period, t2s was calling him California.
Recently, I've been Kindling two books, since one of them, A Moveable Feast, is not enabled for t2s. I started a second to have a story for commutes. I'm doing the Hemingway book as a prelude to reading The Paris Wife and because Chris Orcutt, a writer I respect, calls it his favorite and reads it yearly.
I tend to shy away from buying Kindle books that do not have t2s enabled, making exceptions for very favorite authors and situations like the one I just mentioned. Those read-only downloads are generally saved for stretches of vacation time when commutes, like me, are on hiatus.
I am definitely a one book at a time reader. I cannot keep two plots in my mind let alone many characters at once. I tried the more than one book at a time thing and it just did not happen.
I have tried to read one book at a time but ever since college where I always had to read more than one at a time I find myself still reading at least 4 or 5 at a time
Well I can read to books, one eye for each! ha But I have read multiple books in one day. Its whatever Im in the mood for.
If I'm enjoying it, yes. If not, I will pick up another book then revisit the initial in hopes of gaining a rekindled interest in it. I'm a "Moody Reader," so I have to be in the right place mentally for a book to grab me, i.e. if I'm feeling angsty I absolutely cannot appreciate a drama or romance, but totally dig the horror or dark fantasy! Anyone else have this handicap?
I could, technically, read more than one book at a time, but I prefer to read one book at a time. When I start reading multiple books, I never seem to know which one to pick up to read because I'm engrossed in both.
I really TRY to stick to one book at a time, but it just never works out. It really depends how into the book I am, how long I have to read it (i.e. if it is a library loan), and whether it is on hand when I have the free time to read.
I am definately in my 3 books ata time mood! current thriller, historical fiction, and a non-fiction book
though I place member writers' books at the top of the list!
