carol. Maggie-I found the first few Jim Butcher books to be so-so, but that his writing style and story continued to improve with each book. While I would never buy the first few, I own #6 and subsequent. Simon Green's Nightside stories are very different; I would almost call them pulp urban fiction fantasy. Sort of 'dark' except the story and characters are so exaggerated as to be almost parody. A great deal of stylistic bloodiness with some of the events, sometimes science-fiction like in shifting through time and events. I find Dresden to be a very straightforward narrative, a great deal like a traditional detective story, only with the fantastic elements like vampires, fairy, and temple dogs. Just my thoughts--if you keep reading, Dresden gets better. Green is interesting, and very different.

carol. I'm reading Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price recommended by someone on Goodreads--I can't remember which thread anymore! I'm enjoying it, and will likely stick with the series.

Thanks Carol - good to know on Dresden - they caught me coming off a few other books I was disappointed in so I know I was tougher on them than if I'd been coming off something excellent.

I read the first 3 books of the Dresden Files and I felt the same way about it. I like the character but I got tired of him being exhausted, almost dead but able to do one last big magic thing that would solve everything.
But I've started to listen to book 4 on audiobook read by James Marters and I have to say, I like it. I really like it.

I just finished Betrayals (Strange Angels, #2) by Lilith Saintcrow which I really enjoyed and now I don't know if I want to read Jealousy (Strange Angels, #3) by Lilith Saintcrow or Demonglass (Hex Hall, #2) by Rachel Hawkins

message 1206: by Shelley (new)

Shelley Finished - Nightshade (Nightshade, #1) by Michelle Rowen - better than I expected. Looking to see how the sequel plays out.

Magic Lost, Trouble Found (Raine Benares, #1) by Lisa Shearin - This is a true fantasy with elves, goblins and humans. Again, I thought it was better than reviewed. Put the next book on hold at my library.

Upcoming: Iron Crowned (Dark Swan, #3) by Richelle Mead ; Fatal Circle (Pershephone Alcmedi, #3) by Linda Robertson ; The Cold Kiss of Death (Spellcrackers.com, # 2) by Suzanne McLeod

Sooz Malinoski (soozee) | 13 comments Just Finished Kiss of a Demon King (Immortals After Dark, #7) by Kresley Cole , and was a bit disappointed, since I love Rydstrom in the previous book, so I was keen on seeing his story.. Too much time spent on his shaft.....

Finished Lover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #2) by J.R. Ward , and OMG!!! Why did I wait to start reading this series?

message 1211: by Jupiter1 (new)

Jupiter1 | 29 comments I am currently reading:

PALE DEMON by Kim Harrison (really good)
MATCHED by Allie Condie (not bad so far)
HUSH, HUSH by Becca Fitzpatrick (I'm slightly annoyed with the characters but I can't seem to stop reading it)
DAEMON'S MARK by Caitlin Kittredge (which I'm still reading, it's definitely not as good as previous books)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Finished Red Glove (Curse Workers, #2) by Holly Black and loved it, but liked the first one a little bit better. Still a great read though.

Working on Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh and Eon by Alison Goodman , but may put them to the side if I'm not done before the new BDB comes out.

message 1221: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I almost finished reading Mixed Magics: Four Tales of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones. DWJ is now explaining some of the Chrestomanci universe. 'Stealer of Souls' was by far the best story in the book. A very bad enchanter wants to swallow the souls of past Chrestomancis and become all powerful. He kidnaps two boys to act as his apprentices. Big mistake. 'The Sage of Theare' is the 2nd best story. This story confused me some since it involved alternate deminsions, universes, and travel between them. The lesson of the story was 'Ask questions!'. 'Carol Oneir's Hundredth Dream' was short and sweet. She bottled dreams until her cast of characters rebelled. 'Warlock at the Wheel' was meh.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Right now I'm reading Jane Slayre. It's a hoot. I love it, haven't read the original classic but now more curious and hopeful about it. The twists are hilarious and the writing style is fine. Also really love the hero of the story.

I'm reading a Barbara Michaels mystery as well but it's been put on the back burner as I keep forgetting to finish the end, as it's in my car.

Wondering why netgalley no longer offers this up especially since it doesn't come out for months to come

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) It's possible that they only wanted to get a few readers to early review the book in order to get some buzz going on it, but didn't want to have to give it away to a lot of people if they know there's a larger market to be sold to. I've seen some of the more popular book series go up on NG for a day and then they're gone, whereas newer authors might have a book up for a couple of months.

I think Stacia is right. This one was only up for a day or so. I was surprised how quickly it was pulled.

The book was good though.

message 1236: by Shelley (new)

Shelley I guess I need to pay more attention, like daily, to the new releases. Then again, I have been busy reading through my library stash that finally came in.

Christen (GoldiloxReads) | 36 comments Finished Archangel's Consort (Guild Hunter, #3) by Nalini Singh and started Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1) by Seanan McGuire , which is a little outside the box for me (been reading a lot of PNr and UF with romance) so I'm excited for something different! Honestly, I think all the romance was starting to cloud my head...lol.

Reading Demon Angel (The Guardians, #1) by Meljean Brook , which is kind of sucking my will to live. Finished Children of Scarabaeus (Scarabaeus, #2) by Sara Creasy last night. It was okay, kind of wish she had stretched it out into three books.

Some great recs on here! Off to update the TBR juggernaut.

Moss your comment struck me as funny about sucking your will to live. I know exactly what you mean. Some books can really effect my mood, and since I will often read dark books, it's not always a good effect!

Ah no, it's not sucking my will to live because it's dark, it's because it's so bad. But I know what you mean about DF being a mood-changer, I'm in a reading slump from post-book melancholy and I can't shake it.

I struggled to finish that book when I read it... After finishing it, I swore I would never read another book by that author. I know a lot of people love her books, but I am definitely not one of them. They are SO slow and such a snore fest.

message 1245: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 822 comments I like Meljean Brooks, but I do agree that Demon Angel is a tough one. There is so much world building in it that the book did read slow. The later ones aren't like that.

Did you stand by that sworn oath? I'm wondering if I should give her another go, just in case this was a first-book stumble, but am willing to be guided by other people with more exposure to her. I read the Iron Duke about a month ago and it was great. Demon Angel is going to be a DNF.

Currently reading Asmodeus by Dawn McClure . It's one of those strange books that's probably really dire, but only lets you see glimpses of that direness, so you're never quite sure.

I tried the Iron Duke but couldn't get into that one. But then again Steampunk isn't a favorite genre of mine.
