Your so nice Wendy! I need you to balance me out! :)

message 3802: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) LOL!!! I'm too easy when it comes to reading. As long as I'm entertained enough it gets at lest 3 stars.

Wendy F wrote: "LOL!!! I'm too easy when it comes to reading. As long as I'm entertained enough it gets at lest 3 stars."

That is good for me. It make me really consider why I am rating something lower when I have people like you who are more open to things and give reasons why you liked things (or didn't hate them).

message 3804: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I never did understand why they set the star ratings here. You'd think that 3 stars would be 'ok' since it's right in the middle with 2 stars as 'didn't like it' and one star as 'hated it with the fire of 10 burning suns'.

That's pretty much how I rate.

1 - hated to the depths of my soul
2 - didn't like it
3 - ok
4 - liked it!
5 - Loved it!

That's pretty accurate for me, too. Haha. :)

message 3806: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Right, haha!

It's like when you get that ethic's part of a job application.

1 - strongly disagree
2 - disagree
3 - don't care
4 - agree
5 - strongly agree.

The middle is always the 'eh' one.

Well Brigid, seems we're in agreement on this one. I loved BRR but didn't like the second book nearly as much. For me the highlight was that guy in the dress lol, he was awesome and hilarious but I agree with you that Saba did some weird things that really didn't make me like her very much :(

message 3808: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I've heard a LOT of people say that about Rebel Heart. I think that's why I've been hesitating starting it.

See! I knew David wasn't as into it as BRR! It is on permanant hold for me. I think I will wait until book 3 comes out and if people love it I will read them back to back.

message 3810: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 836 comments Lol I think that's a good plan :) Sorry to rain on the parade. I had really high expectations although its almost worth reading just for that guy in the dress, he's a crack up!

Harold Smithson | 87 comments Currently reading quite a few books, but I'm focusing on: Brighton Rock Graham Greene is such and underrated wonder of the literary world.

I took your advice, Heidi, and I started the contest over here. Here's the link: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

I suspect that some of the decisions Saba made were not exactly her fault ... that is, it seems like there's some kind of weird mind-control thing going on. I'm not sure. But it still weirded me out.

Anyway, I agree with David that at least there were some cool new characters. I loved Slim too (the guy in the dress, haha). I also love Molly. :)

Ok I would love it as a personal favor if everyone would go and nominate at least one kick ass villan in Harold's contest as a welcome to her. You guys rock! I know you can do it :)

Finished:

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Took me like a month, lol. But YAAAYYY it was awesome! :)

I am now reading:

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes, #4) by Arthur Conan Doyle Going After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien

I might also start:

Pandemonium (Delirium, #2) by Lauren Oliver

message 3818: by David (new)

Ugh! I am 98% done with the audiobook for Black Heart Black Heart (Curse Workers, #3) by Holly Black and don't want it to end because it is the last book in the series so I am drawing it out. I highly recommend this little series by the way -- especially the audiobooks narrated by Jessie Eisenberg who rocks as narrator!

Well, I finished Pandemonium today. (Heh, I know ... that was fast.) I don't think you really have to remember much about the first book besides how it ended. It's very different ...

Anyway, I liked it. It was a little confusing because it switched back and forth in time a lot, and I wasn't sure what the purpose of that was. But it was addicting. XD

Hmm, I've been on the fence about trying that series. But I think I may give it a shot. :)

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes, #4) by Arthur Conan Doyle Going After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien

I'm also about to start:

Radiant (Unearthly, #2.5) by Cynthia Hand

... Which I want to finish before the third book comes out in three days. Eeeeeep.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 836 comments I finished Grasping at Eternity (The Kindrily, #1) by Karen Amanda Hooper , it was sooo good!! So proud of Ms Hooper, she's an amazing Indie!

Now I'm reading A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness , I'm addicted to Patrick Ness's writing!

Agreed. The audio was excellent for that book as well in case anyone likes audiobooks like me :) Ugh! It makes me sad/happy thinking of that book.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I'm 2/3 through The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and started The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey (The Mysterious Benedict Society, #2) by Trenton Lee Stewart . Still haven't gotten up the motivation to read The Great Gatsby. I had to read it in high school and remember not liking it, but I have a book group that is reading it so I thought I'd go through it again. Just can't find the motivation, though.

message 3836: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) That's tough. I've heard the audio is excellent, but then you lose the pictures that are excellent...

Yeah I had that issues with Book Thief too so I bought the print book afterwards to see the pictures. I still need to get the print version of A Monster Calls.... Jason Isaacs is an awesome narrator though so I am still glad I listened.

Becky thoughts on Night Circus??

Hey btw people we are still looking for anyone who would like to volunteer to pick the monthly read for March. If there are no takers I guess we can go back to the old method where we put a poll up??

message 3839: by Becky (new)

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I figured I'd save my Night Circus thoughts for the book discussion. One thing I'll say, though, is the bouncing time back and forth was a bit annoying. I had to keep flipping back to see where Bailey's timeline fit in with Celia's. I'm pretty sure it could have been kept chronological without taking away from the story.

I LOVED the night circus. I stayed up until almost 4 am to finish it. The audio book version is even better, with Jim Dale doing the narrating. What are you thinking of it so far?

I'm currently reading
Hold Me Closer, Necromancer and Vortex. I'm terrified of reading Vortex though because I loved Tempest so much.

Lloyd | 110 comments Anyone who hasn't read A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness -- it is really a wonderful book and well worth the time to read.

Also, I know that there is much love for Melina Marchetta...and Amazon has Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) by Melina Marchetta on sale for $1.99 -- so I bought it. (Though who knows when I'll actually get to reading it)

Just a couple tidbits to brighten the reading day. :)

Yes, A Monster Calls is brilliant! One of my favorite books of all time. So beautiful.

Anyway, I started:

Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor

I wasn't as in love with the first book as most people seem to be ... It was kinda just "okay" for me, but I'm hoping it'll get better in the second book. :)
