Elli | 228 comments Am finding alot of interest in John Lawton. Inspector Troy is a British Scotland Yard agent in WWII. Setting is during the heavy city bombing. At least in Black Out. And are those pages turning! Seems to have all the elements I like making up his storytelling. Also have Old Flame home and will follow it next.

The Janeway series isn't my favourite mystery series; I much prefer Donna Leon's Brunetti books or David Rotenberg's Zhang Fong stories for example, but at the same time I enjoy the Janeway books too. I like the whole antique/ used book experience. The last one I read, The Bookman's Promise was about following the trail of Sir Richard Burton's voyages in America around the time of the Civil War. Oddly enough, shortly after reading, I came across originals of Sir Richard Burton's biography written by his wife. Unfortunately, they were a bit too expensive for my budget, but it was neat tying the two together. The Janeway stories are always worth a read. :0)

Bill, I am so with you on the Donna Leon books...I hope she never stops writing! I've not tried David Rotenberg but have him on my list now...thanks :)

Fallen is the newest of her books, if you haven't read the earlier books Georgia and Will Trent series are good and so is Grant County (the earliest series) though I prefered the later of these...
If you are at the end of KS books Lisa Gardner's DD Warren series is one I really enjoyed or maybe stand-alones? Try Linwood Barclay. Those are some of my picks so far this year.

Only the first Lindsay Gordon, Report for Murder, it was ok... should I try more in the series or try a stand-alone? I've been considering Michael Marshall, I hear good things but have never read any of his... so many choices!

Kim (kimmr) Mary wrote: "Just finished In the Woods, now wondering if I will read Faithful Place, or should I read Sacrifice"

Mary, if you haven't read it already, I would read The Likeness before Faithful Place. It is probably one of the most implausible novels I've ever read (big call, I know!) but it's a page turner and it introduces Faithful Place's central character.

I went with Faithful Place after all, and I do remember from "In the Woods" that Frank Mackey was Cassies former boss. I don't have The Likeness picked up yet, I wish I'd asked this question sooner and I would have held off on starting reading Faithful Place. However, I am well into it now and it's pretty good. I'm going to get "The Likeness", a.s.a.p.

I have, Diane. It's one of my favorite series. Each book seems better than the one before. Unfortunately they have been hard to get here in the U.S. But now that Billingham is with Mulholland Books that should be fixed. I first heard of him recommended on Michael Connelly's forum. Really great series, and I love his friendship with Hendricks.

I'm looking forward to this. Read the first two, although I'm starting to get frustrated with the emphasis on the personal/emotional difficulties both of the main characters are dealing with. I find myself thinking "So get OVER it already and get on with the job!"

I suspect the third book will be a 'make or break' for me for the series ...

message 3134: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) I've started reading Tess Gerritsen's The Silent Girl for no better reason than my daughter bought it to read on a flight home from overseas and then passed it on to me. It's been sitting on my bedroom floor for a couple of weeks and reading it seemed easier than finding a place for it on a bookshelf. It's ok so far, but I suspect it's not one of Gerritsen's best.

I hear you, Hayes. Mine certainly has just cause to divorce me for the same reason. Tell him it's caused by a rare medical condition for which you need support and empathy...

There's a fireplace in our bedroom, on the hearth of which are a number of piles of books, busily collecting dust. You'd think I could choose a book to read from the bottom of one of the piles. Or maybe go back and pick something languishing on my TBR list. But no, I have to pick up some random book which has only been in my possession for a couple of weeks!

I've just begun listening to The Surgeon with the intention of reading through the series, maybe The Silent Girl is better read in order? Is it part of the series, not familiar, I must go look ... OK, it's #9. So maybe it's better when read in order, I'll keep that in mind :)

message 3138: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) aprilla wrote: "I've just begun listening to The Surgeon with the intention of reading through the series, maybe The Silent Girl is better read in order? For when I get to it I'm hoping so anyway..."

I think it is probably best to read Gerritsen's books in order. That's probably true of most contemporary crime fiction writers who almost invariably have a series "arc" running through their novels. It's a bit tedious, unless you find a new author and can have the fun of a marathon. Otherwise you're stuck with having to wait a year or 18 months between instalments!

aprilla Kim wrote: "aprilla wrote: "I've just begun listening to The Surgeon with the intention of reading through the series, maybe The Silent Girl is better read in order? For when I get to it I'm hoping so anyway....."

Oh I love the marathon of a series in order! And I have the patience to wait and gather LOL Even in series I'm pretty current in I'll wait to have two or three books to read in a row. There are so many books I want to get to this isn't really a problem.

I did have a mission at one stage to form a list of series which have the last and final book already written. Trilogys are easy, if there's three books they're done! Others go on soooo long between next books... I had done some searching but didn't get anywhere.
Anyone know of such a list? Do authors even know if they are finished a series I wonder? Not always I guess.
Hmm, maybe I sould suggest this at fictfact.com I did

One way of doing it, I guess, is to read books by novelists who are no longer with us. I recently re-read all of the novels of Dorothy L Sayers, in order. She is one of my very favourite writers and having a Sayers marathon was such a joy!

I read the books in my 11 hour night shift work and nothing makes the night go faster than Scudder ;)
