I finished
, the first Vera Stanhope mystery, by Ann Cleeves this morning and enjoyed very much. Definitely a different mystery and way of setting the story up. I'm working my way through
by Philip K. Dick and enjoying very much. I'm about to start
by Winston Graham, which was used by Alfred Hitchcock for the subject of one of his movies.

I'm enjoying it Brenda. The mystery is interesting (if a little cliche) and the portrayal of Frank's dysfuntional family is very well done.

I just finished Private by James Patterson. I'm kind of ashamed to admit that I actually enjoyed it. It is by no means a masterpiece, but it was a quick read that I was able to take in during my crazy work schedule. With that all behind me, I'm now starting Black Irish by Stephan Talty.

Hang in there with it Connie, it's definitely worth it. She does drag a bit with the details, but I found all the ones I've read so far excellent. They are definitely not a quick read like a cozy that can be zipped thru, but they are oh so good.

That's good to hear Barbara. I've heard good reports, and I've really enjoyed the first two, even though they're pretty long...
So far this month I have read Simon Becketts The Chemistry Of Death, and Whispers Of The Dead, and I am halfway through Written in Bone. These are such good crime stories that I want to read them all lol. Highly recommended. Whispers of the Dead The Chemistry of Death
Written in Bone
Currently enjoying Dr. Bloodmoney or How We Got Along after the Bomb and Marnie. Excellent stories so far.
Just finished

I liked that book, also. The next one, Private: #1 Suspect, I liked even better. It's a pretty good series. My favorite is Private Games.

Reading Dark House by Karina Halle. It started out really good but now I'm in the middle its lagging. I hate that, the story isn't happening fast enough.

I don't remember how I stumbled upon the DD series but I read that first. Then I started seeing that Quincy & Rainie, who appeared in one of the DD books, had their own series, I just had to go back and read that lol.
Have just read MR Hall "The Chosen Dead" and really enjoyed, as I have done with all his previous titles. The main character is a fearless British coroner. Also read Elly Griffiths "Dying Fall" , enjoyed this but not as much as her previous titles. Currently reading David Hewson's "The Killing 2" and have Katherine Howell's latest "Web of Deceit" lined up next.

Gotta be out there somewhere. That was pretty compelling. The moors and the prose and whole dark gothic language can be a bit much. What killed it for you?
Finished The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen yesterday. I started In A Dry Season by Peter Robinson today.
I finished The Innocent by David Baldacci and have now started Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever by Bill O'Reilly. So far it is very good!
Just finished The Sins of the Fathers by Lawrence Block. I really liked it. I like the fact that he didn't waste words. He told his story and got it done in less than 300 pages. Starting to get detective series fatigue over these unnecessarily long 500 page books. So much filler and skimming.

I loved The Innocent. It was the best book I read all last year.

Brenda wrote: "I have just started Web of Deceit by Katherine Howell ...absolutely love her series!"Hi Brenda, fancy seeing you here :) I am going to have to move her series up in my tbr pile - I am hearing great things!
Just finished The Brass Verdict. I was a little disappointed when I started this because it was a Mickey Haller (lawyer) book. I don't like this character much. Don't like lawyer books much.Thankfully Harry showed up to save the day and Jack McEvoy was introduced. It had a fairly clever twist at the end that made it all worthwhile.
I will have to try some of the recommendations in this thread. Thanks, guys.

Haha, hi Michele:) Yes, you will most definitely have to read her books:)
I just finished "Hit Me" by Lawrence Block. This is the fifth book in the series about stamp collecting assassin, John Keller. I have loved all five of these books. Long live Keller!
Hi everyone! There are a ton of great books mentioned in this thread--I have a feeling my "To-Be Read" shelf is about to be overflowing!I love a good who-dunnit, especially the ones with an interesting paranormal twist. I just recently caught up on Victoria Laurie's Ghosthunter Mystery Series, about a woman named MJ Holliday who is a psychic medium and can see and talk to ghosts. She helps spirits cross over, but sometimes they help her solve a murder or two first!
To be honest, I like this series alright, but I'm a much bigger fan of Victoria Laurie's Psychic Eye series about a psychic named Abigail Cooper who often helps the police and her private investigator best friend solve crimes and murders. I relate better to Abby's wit, sarcasm, and all over personality.
Has anyone else read the works of Miss Laurie? What do you think?

Tess Gerritsen is one of my favorite authors. I haven't read a book by her that I didn't like.

I just finished the newest Ghost Hunter book also, Anne. And the first of the Psychic Eye. What great balance they are for more, ahem, "serious" literature.
Thing is, I'm not usually a huge fan of novels centered on the paranormal. But I really enjoy Victoria Laurie's characters and look forward to each in the series.
I also liked Charlaine Harris' series with Aurora Teagarden and Lily Bard (not paranormal), as well as the Harper Connelly books (talks to the dead). But for some reason I haven't gotten past book three of the Sookie Stackhouse books!
Renee wrote: I just finished the newest Ghost Hunter book also, Anne. And the first of the Psychic Eye. What a great balance they are for more, ahem,...I couldn't agree more! I've read all of the Sookie books and will read the last one just to see how it ends, but it is definitely my least favorite of Harris' series. I enjoyed the Lily Bard series a lot and especially the Roe Teagarden books since they are set just outside of Atlanta (I like in the area!).
The Harper Connelly books are most definitely my favorite, though. I love Harper so much, in fact, that her character was the inspiration for the new series I'm currently writing. My main character doesn't talk to the dead, but there is still some similarity in their abilities and personalities, and mine has an paranormal elements as well. I can't wait to crank out books 1 and 2 (still in the first draft stage).
Have you read Charlaine's standalone books? There's "Sweet and Deadly" and "A Secret Rage." "Sweet and Deadly" I wasn't a huge fan of, I believe it was her first novel. "A Secret Rage" was pretty good, though. If you haven't read either of them but enjoy Harris' work for the most part, I'd recommend checking them out.
