I have a comment that has to do with the way we post books. This is the ONLY group where I am required to post a link with the cover of the book. I know a few people use their mobile phones and the cover is small so you can't read it. I am wondering, though, how many people are there that use their mobile phones that much for their goodreads post. I use my desktop, laptop, and my kindle fire. All of those devices have a large enough thumbprint that I can read it easily. Also, you can press on the cover of the book and it will take you to the link. These links are BORING. I am always attracted to the book covers. Also, I have noticed that some folks aren't even using a link!!!! They are typing in the name of the book with no other info, like who the author is. Part of the reason we post here is to find new authors and books and get insight into how people feel about them. I don't see the harm in adding a little flavor by posting the book cover. If you can't read it, press on the image and enlarge it by pinching your screen or tapping on it twice. But, if you are going to post here at least add the link so I will know the name of the book and the author so I can check the book out for myself. I can't do that if you don't give the the author's name. Sorry for the rant, but this WAS one of my favorite groups and now I'm getting frustrated with it. I'm not trying to start any trouble,or offend anyone, but I liked things better when we could post either the link or the cover. I must be in the minority since the rules changed. I just wanted to voice my opinion about the new rule changes. Again, I love this feed , and I will comply with the rules. I just hope we can make it interesting and informative too.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39237 comments All of my daytime postings are on the phone. People have gone on record as saying that they no longer look at this thread due to posting of covers. They are unreadable. I don't particularly care to see covers, even when I'm at a computer. But this group cares enough about the members to try to accommodate those of us who use the phones. I'm sorry if that inconveniences you.

Sorry about the rant.

Jan,
I also saw a few post about book covers being unreadable. But, it was only two people. That was why I asked. I am just more likely to check out a colorful cover than a plain link. We are all different and I respect everyone on this feed. I just liked it better the old way. I haven't had any problems with other groups I am a member of. In fact, nearly all the post are book covers. I don't know if you saw some of the more recent feed post where people wrote in a name of a book with no author name or link. There are so many books with titles that are the similar that I would like to see at least a link. That way if the title sounds interesting I can click on the link and see more about the book. I wasn't going to say anything until I noticed that since the rule change people aren't even posting links anymore. I hope that this group cares enough about me that they will consider my taste as well. If I threaten to leave the group will the rules suddenly shift back? I doubt it. But, for the record, I wasn't trying to be snide , rude or disrespectful to the folks that use their phones for post. I just don't use mine for post and wondered how many people did, since it instigated a rule change. I REALLY didn't mean to offend. Maybe it was the way I worded it. I was just frustrated by the last few post which didn't even have a link and thought, Hey, I'm a member here too, so many I should speak up. Next time I'll keep my opinion to myself. Sorry, Sorry,Sorry. Just forget I said anything.

Julie (gpangel) | 148 comments In regards to my previous post, it appears I made people angry. I am really sorry. I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings. I won't bring it up again. I will, of course respect the feelings of the majority. I guess I must have sounded like real *****. I'm not too good with words I guess. Please disregard the post. I didn't mean any harm. Will keep my mouth shut in the future.

I wasn't even aware we were required to post a link with the cover of the book. I'm sure I've posted just the title/author link on some of mine and not been told a cover link was required.

Is it a requirement?

message 8359: by Susan from MD (new)

Susan from MD | 58 comments Well, this is the third group that I follow that has erupted today! Is there a full moon or something? My GR happy place has become a war zone.

I think it's always hard with written notes that may not reflect the tone of the writer - people can take offense. In addition, sometimes people may not be aware of the history of discussions or issues.

Personally, I like having the link and the cover, and if the link does not list the author's name then having that added. I do sometimes use my phone, so having both the title and author name is nice. When I'm on my laptop, I like just being able to click on the link or the cover to get to a description of the book.

But, I'm not wanting to prolong this.

Yes, please lets just drop it. I feel terrible.

message 8361: by Susan from MD (new)

Susan from MD | 58 comments Well, the bigger issue to me is that someone (anyone) feels unable to express his/her opinion, even if s/he is frustrated. We all get a little hot under the collar sometimes - IMO, it shouldn't stop discussion, even of the rules.

I mean, really, this is about posting to a message board! It's not exactly a life or death issue.

message 8362: by Elli (new)

Elli | 228 comments I agree. Censorship? I do get momentarily hot under the collar when frustrated over something I consider stupid.... as well as not having professional quality computer skills, although why do mine seem to work quite well on some applications and others are filled with frustration. I don't think I'd bother with Goodreads except that I really love reading books I love. I don't bother much with pictures on Goodreads. I tried to do some on the inbox page for photos some time ago and found nothing but frustration. I can't read the pictures either on my laptop or my tablet. Forget the phone! I don't have good eyes anyway. But sometimes I can just press the cursor on the picture and bring up the initial description. I'll continue as I do with goodreads, some posting, but much more reading. I don't generally take my frustrations that seriously for that long, nor do I take those posted by others either. Life does go on until it is no longer. My one real anger was some time ago when an author got too pushy about me buying his book and I Screamed on that one. And I got satisfaction, too, so no further big deal.

message 8363: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39237 comments I'm sorry if I sounded like I was really peeved this morning. Everyone should have a right to express an opinion. I generally do a link when referring to a book, unless I'm on my phone and I haven't figured out how to link (if it is possible). But I almost never do a cover (unless it is in a game requiring a cover).

And don't get so bent out of shape so easy. Life's too short for that.

June (juneedelsonnj) | 105 comments Sorry I didn't know a link is required . Can someone tell me how to post a picture or link from my IPad. It's new and I don't know how to cut and paste from it. I know it's not easy because I've tried it on another forum.

Is it a requirement to do this?
Thanks

Gary (authorponzo) | 20 comments I'm currently reading Dennis Lehane's, "Live by Night." I remember him being a good writer from past books I've read, but this one is so well written that the storyline is almost secondary to the enjoyment of reading his prose. A must read, I think.

Hi from the moderators!

There is no hard and fast rule about including a link, cover, author name, or title in your post.

However, it is a big help to your fellow members to have some way to access more information about the book you are referring to.

There are so many different devices and a world of different users in our group that is is impossible to say it has to be just one way. Simply try the best you can with the device you are using.

Hi Diana, When you are in the comment box you'll see the words "add book/author" above the box on the right. Click on that and a little box opens. You can search for your book by title or search for an author. When you find the book you can add the title as a link or click the option to add a cover.

I do have to say that I have been having problems with this function today. I don't know if it is my system or if it is Goodreads but normally it works great.

Paula Richards (PaulaPaula) | 3 comments The last thriller I read and have recommended to my friends was Come Out - Come Out by H. A. Qureshi.

It's a psychological thriller with one of the most diabolical villains I have read about in years. Though it's fiction, there are a ton of parallels to what's on the news every day about kidnappers, serial killers, and sadists. It was a great read.

Elli | 228 comments HhH and going slowly. It's interesting in it's way...writing an incident (Heydrich's assassination; WW2) with too many questions, not enough solidity in the answers and deciding what is important. I'm going to finish it, but am anxious to do so and get on to something more drawing to me. Am reading Tengu by John Donahue as well, and The Defector by Daniel Silva as well as that. Now, how did I get into this position....
