I'm reading The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout for a book club discussion, but I think it will be useful for my mystery writing, too. It's rather dry nonfiction, having been written by a PhD psychologist, but it's insightful in figuring out how SOME killers are made.
Finished reading A Carrion Death last night and I really did enjoy it. Exotic setting, interesting and engaging characters, complex plot with twists and turns but I thought it was just a tiny bit too long.
Now reading Mr. Churchill's Secretary and listening to Hit List

I can't seem to concentrate on anything serious lately, so I'm going to read light and fluffy for a while. I'm currently in the middle of
by Charlaine Harris. I didn't really like her other series but so far I'm enjoying this one.
Finished Fifty Shades of Grey and I need to go back to my usual mysteries before I go into the 2nd book. I'm not into the romance/erotica thing so much so reading it back to back will make me bored lol. Just picked up Trail Of Blood by Lisa Black. I was pretty disappointed with her last book so I'm hoping this one is better!!
I'm reading The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory . The first couple of chapters were a little sad in my opinion.
Finsihed The Skeleton Box and The Last Kind Words, enjoyed them both gave them both 4 stars. Now reading Never Tell.

I've also enjoyed the Karin Slaughter books I've read so far. The first was outstanding and all the others were interesting.

Finished the three I was still reading at last update: The Poet
, One Shot
and 11/22/63
. AlsoThe Concrete Blonde
and Definitely, Maybe
.Re The Poet -- I liked it, but I like Bosch better. Bosch is deeper and richer. Probably a product of this book being relatively early in Connelly's career. Really liked The Concrete Blonde, particularly the interplay between Bosch and Edgar.
Re One Shot -- this one was a nice break from the other string of Lee Childs which were all towns-in-trouble variations. This one is the first Lee Child I ever read but it was so long ago I had no memory of it-- and it had an interesting premise with an interesting tie to Reacher's past.
Definitely, Maybe -- fluff, not up to the quality of the rest of the series. Stick to long form, Heather!
11/22/63 -- Wow. Interesting that throughout the book the assumption is the world is a better place if JFK survives, and that goes virtually unquestioned until it proves not to be the case. Says a lot about the mythos that has grown up around JFK in our society. We lived in Dallas then -- I was born a few months after the assassination -- and I of course heard the "where were you" stories from my family. My dad, a lifelong republican, once said that although he didn't agree with JFK's politics, it was impossible not to like him. I can see that (and I'm a democrat so I don't have the conflict). I lived in Dallas until I was five or six, and even though I left there at such a young age, I remember the place as having a deep pall of nastiness and negativity like King describes in his afterword. I remember nice people, and the feeling they were trapped in a nasty place.
Reading The Fifth Witness
and about to start The Eleventh Man
and Four of a Kind: A Novel
.

I did not pick the cover for She's Come Undone, the computer did it when I replied to the comment. I have been told that I need to read that book though.

Jeanie I love Gamache, if all men were so sensitive it would be as better world. Yet, many women seems to like the bad boy or macho man. I think 50 shades of grey proves that
Finished J.R. Lindermuth's "The Accidental Spy" -- a spy thriller set in the American Revolution. I found it here on Good Reads and thoroughly enjoyed this novella, for July 4th. Last night I read "The Hunger Games". I started the 2nd book but had to set it aside. So, now I'm reading James Patterson's "Ist To Die" and Barry Eisler's "The Khmer Kill" on my Kindle.

Donna wrote: "Doesn't anyone have an editor anymore?"Funnily enough, Donna, editors are likely part of the problem. Eds tend to insist on certain word lengths for books, regardless of whether the story will bear the weight of those words.

Just finished book 1 in the Phyrne Fisher series by Kerry Greenwood,
Cocaine Blues
I'm going to give it 3 1/2 stars. Bit of a slow start, but it did pick up and I was really enjoying it a lot by the end. Just a light, fun read. I managed to get the first 10 on sale, so it's on to #2, Flying too high, after I finish The god of the hive, which I am also reading.

Finished Eisler's Kindle Single "A Khmer Kill" -- something between a long short story and a short novella. Moves right along -- a killer with a conscience. The thing about Eisler is the action and story feel authentic to the point where at times it feels like a first person narrative even though it's third person.James Patterson tonight when I get home from my afternoon gig.
Others read in the last few days -- James Patterson: "Four Blind Mice"; "Cross" -- riveting as per usual.
Robert Ludlum and Philip Shelby -- "The Cassandra Compact" -- so so; not up to early Ludlum for sure.
Robert B. Parker -- "Hundred Dollar Baby" -- great stuff from a master.

Just finished
which I found difficult to put down. Very interesting set of characters and I really like the main female character.Unfortunately annoyed at the 'cliffhanger' ending ... could have lived without that.

It does get better once Kate starts to use her old tricks to find out about her new 'friends'.
I just finished reading
. This is my most favorite book in the Song and Fire Series. I am trying not to jump into
because I don't want the series to end yet.Currently, I am reading
.
Recently finished Alpha by Greg Rucka - great summer thriller - and Damage Control by John Gilstrap - really entertaining read. Just started Ransom River by Meg Gardiner and the first couple of chapters are excellent.
I finished The Poisonwood Bible this morning. What a fantastic book! I'm starting a thriller by Lionel Davidson next; A Long Way to Shiloh next, to go along with my second book, The Sword in the Stone.

I agree I have read all four of Wally Lamb's fictional books and one of his non fiction books and "I Know This Much Is True" is his best book. One of my all time top ten books.

His excellence at his job comes from his goodness not from selfishness and that is rare. I love him and the series Aloha

"I think this is so true ... I can remember being totally enamoured of James Bond and Travis McGee when I was in my 20s/ early 30s ...
By the time I was in my 50s I had discovered how much more I appreciated men like Walt Longmier, Gabriel DuPre and the later-book version of Lucas Davenport.
I just finished reading "Being Antisocial" by Leigh K Cunningham. Wonderful book and very well-written. I got it for free on Amazon during the promotional period of book launch and I was pleasantly surprised to have found something so delightful!
Just finished
which I picked up as a free download. I really wanted to like this more than I did, readable but some real issues for me with the main character ... and, of course, horses.
I am reading "When Gods Die", the second book in C.S. Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr. series. The plots are well structured ans entertaining. The series is set during Regency England (the late 18th century). It is evident that Harris has put a lot of effort into assuring a high level of historical accuracy in her novels without taking away from the story or character development. Good stuff.
I have just started An Expert in Murder. I've heard mixed reviews about it. I'll have to see for myself, I s'pose. I am also reading Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls because sometimes one needs a bit of Scooby Doo-esque in one's life. And it is one of the few paranormal series that I've really enjoyed.
If you have read some of the earlier Dick Francis books, I'd be very interested in knowing how you compare the ones he wrote before his wife's death and the ones he wrote with his son, later.I've been a Dick Francis fan since his first book but have found the ones he wrote with his son quite different.
Just finished reading The game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin , what a great book and such a lot of characters it took all my concentration to remember who was who, but it was well worth it,now I have to get the next book
Just finished James Patterson's "1st To Die". This is the first in the Women's Murder Club series, and the first of the series that I've read. What can you say about James Patterson? The crack cocaine of mystery thrillers.

This evening I finished Taken - Charlotte Abel and have to wait til September to read the finale and find out what happens next lol. Now I am reading Ignite - Z.L. Arkadie which is book 5 of the series.
