Jane (flopsybunny) | 159 comments Has anyone read Catriona Mcpherson's Dandy Gilver books and if so do they have to be read in order. I have the 5th in the series but don't want to read it if I have missed too much back-story. Thanks.

Our library only had Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains on hand. I'm impatient so I checked it out. I really enjoyed it, but did wish I had read the first one first. I think it could have been read on it's own. But I didn't finish it and am on the lookout for the first. So, I've got no real advice, just my own experience to share.

That is the only one I have been able to get so far Renee but I might have to order the first one. I do prefer to read series in order if I can.

The first one is called An Expert in Murder and is a really good read.

Jeanie (birdyseeds) | 382 comments I've discovered Nevada Barr thanks to Diane. Her writing feels like a mix between Sharon McCrumb and Dana Stabenow to me, so I'm enjoying her books accordingly. Also great for me, her protagonist moves around the country working at various national parks which is helping me eliminate several states in the "50 States - 50 Books" challenge!

I agree PC seems to have lost her way. I think Scarpetta has become a thoroughly unlikeable character.

LOL! No she hasn't tossed out her niece. In fact Lucy has become equally 'unlikeable'. I really enjoyed her early books too. PC appears to have lost the plot around book 11 or 12 when she did something which to me was unnecessary, unbelievable and frankly quite ridiculous. I won't say what that was in case you decide to read more. Suffice to say the recent books have been light on plot and heavy on the emotional baggage carried around by the main characters.

(laughing) I completely agree. More misery than mystery, and the books did lose luster after the silly event.

Last man standing was a fantastic book. My favourite books by Baldacci's are his Maxwell and King stories!

Finished reading Rogue Island which I really enjoyed. A hardend newspaper reporter investigates a series of fires (arsons?) in his hometown of Providence, RI. Crisp writing and some quirky characters with touchs of wry humor.

I also listened to Chasing Vermeer, a YA or even childrens book. Fans of From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Faithwather would enjoy this.

Almost as silly but lets say it was straight out of a day time soap! Almost as bad as Bobby Ewing and the shower scene for those of us that remember Dallas!

You are making me dread the next few books. :( I happen to like Lucy at this point and would be sad to end up disliking her later. I guess I have about 2 more books before I get to that point. I'm also reading Vanish (Jane Rizzoli & Maura Isles, #5) by Tess Gerritsen which is starting to get pretty good.

@Dieter, I read the first one,
The Case of the Missing Servant and enjoyed it. I do plan to read the others at some point. I can relate to them b/c I am also from India, Punjabi, just like Vish Puri.

Have you read any of the A Most Peculiar Malaysian Murder series? I would like to try those too.

Besides, I am always checking our library sale shelves and thrift store bookshelves.

Finally, I'm a magazine subscription junkie(MANY subscriptions and yet never enough), another source for my TBR list.

I really liked the first, A Most Peculiar Malaysian Murder. It was a great plot--with interesting plotlets--and a likeable detective in the middle of the action.

I haven't gotten to the second--A Bali Conspiracy Most Foul-- which sends our intrepid investigator to Bali after a terrorist bombing of a nightclub. But now that you've reminded me....
