Sharon Michael | 674 comments Finished The Butterfly Forestlast night and really disappointed that the other two in this series isn't available for Kindle. Very well done, tightly plotted, if a little 'over the top' in places (but this IS fiction) and very well established characters.

message 5754: by EdwardW (new)

EdwardW | 3 comments I have recently enjoyed Alpha to Omega by William Lynhope. He is one of those authors who makes you wonder where fiction starts and fact ends. This is a particularly thought provoking and timely book. It came to me by recommendation and as far as I know, is available on all e-book platforms (Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iPad etc)
It's quite a 'big read' (300+ pages), but still moves along at a good pace.

That is exactly what I thought and I also felt her trying to write dialogue for a 14 yr. old was very stilted and awkward.

Perhaps she's getting ready to follow the trend of creating a YA series? I kind of wondered whether she had someone else writing with her, given the 75% teen angst content....

Saw the movie. I though it was great that they managed to make it scary by using atmosphere and older techniques instead of special effects. What did you think? Read the book too and liked that as well.

Diane, If you want to read a scary book and see the movie too, I recommend The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and the 1963 movie The Haunting. The movie done in 2000 was an abomination but the original was excellent and used no special effects. It is rumored that the house they used for the film is haunted and permission to film inside had to be gotten from the "residents".

Grafton and Evanovich are two I have walked away from. I found that I was bored with both of them. More particularly with Evanovich; I decided that a joke which worked for me twelve or thirteen times just wasn't going to work any more. Fairstein is another. I got sick of reading her main character's backstory for the umpteenth time. More recently, I've decided that I have to give up Sara Paretsky. I've been reading VI Warshawski books since the beginning of time and the most recent one was .... well, I found it not in the least bit compelling.

It's rather sad, giving up on a series. It feels like giving up on a friendship. But sometimes it just needs to be done.

Jeanie (birdyseeds) | 382 comments Tim wrote: "What's his (T Jefferson Parker) newest series?"

I figure it's the Charlie Hood series, but since I'm new to Parker's work, I'm not certain. I've been trying to slog through the audio of the second book in the series, but Colacci's narration is, and this is simply my opinion mind you, like trying to listen to a book narrated by Ben Stein, so I'll have to clean off my reading glasses for this one! ANd I have a question about Lee Child Jack Reacher books. I started one. I was kind of uncomfortable with the British influence in the dialogue of the Americans... and for that reason, (because it seemed unreal, or inauthentic,) I stopped reading the book and have never ventured further into the Reacher books. I notice they are well -loved... did i get it wrong?

I know what you mean. I try not to give up on a series, but sometimes you just can't forge on. I've only dropped a few series, but they were all Y-A. I started them when I was younger (12 or 13), and as I got older I just grew out of them. It wasn't so much that I didn't like the writing, it was more of I moved on to more adult books. I wasn't excited to read about girls choosing lip gloss and pulling pranks on their middle school classmates.

Just picked up Vince Flynn's "Kill Shot", but it will have to wait as I've started "Wolf" a bio of Jack London. Sounds intriguing. And following the thread of walking away from a series? I have to say I am done with Evanovich too. Much as I loved Stephanie Plum, Joe Morelli and the others, they are played! :-(

message 5790: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) So I had about 7 books going and wasn't making significant progress anywhere. Finished two, most of the way through most of the others, zeroed in last couple days on two of them: Bad Luck And Trouble on audio and The Tin Roof Blowdown. Enjoying both but The Tin Roof Blowdown-- well, first of all it's set right after Katrina which is horrific. Second, I recently read a book several books farther in in this series, one in which the main character never once mentioned his daughter- who has always been a main focus. So for him to NEVER mention her makes me think something awful happened. Now I'm reading one of the in-between books I missed- The Tin Roof Blowdown-- and reading every page with my heart in my throat, because the daughter is a character in this one and a psychopath has met her.....

Laurin (llooloo) I currently have 10 books going right now. 5 are school books. The others - two are Sherlock Holmes (one novel, and a larger book), 2 Miss Marples (one novel and a collection of novels), and Death by the Dozen. I'm not really making good progress.

Valerie | 46 comments I just started V is for Vengeance V is for Vengeance (Kinsey Millhone, #22) by Sue Grafton by Sue Grafton. I have read all the others in the series, and my mom gave me her copy to read. It's interesting so far...not the typical Kinsey Millhone story so far.

Kim wrote: "Teresa in Ohio wrote: "Sadly this is a goal of mine this year, either reconnect with all the series I have in progress AND enjoy them or walk away. "

This was an interesting comment...and I have to agree, also. There are a couple series that I read everything that was currently published, but will not buy the next book that comes out. Evanovich is one of those for me.

This is especially true now that I have found this group on Goodreads, as my TBR pile is bigger than it's ever been!
