City of Ember.

message 2355: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I love that book! One of my absolute favorites.

message 2356: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments That was good, but yes, it is more suitable for 4th grade than for 8th grade pre-AP English.

message 2357: by Mayze (new)

Mayze I loved city of Ember in fourth grade too :) I'm jealous that you get to read it for school!

I'm reading Jane Eyre right now.

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) Kate wrote: "That was good, but yes, it is more suitable for 4th grade than for 8th grade pre-AP English."

I think Ember would be perfect for 6th grade ELA. But yeah, 8th grade is a little too old (at least, to read as an assigned for-a-grade book). When I teach 8th English, the modern books I'm going to assign will be The Hunger Games (JUST the first book), maybe Leviathan, Megan Whalen Turner's The Thief, The Book Thief and MAYBE Divergent.
For 6th grade, the recommendations would be a lot easier: The Lightning Thief,The Book of Three (maybe the whole Chronicles of Prydain series, since they're short), The Looking Glass Wars, The Maze Runner, Redwall or anything by Brian Jacques, and maybe Heist Society
:P

message 2359: by Ingrid (last edited Sep 04, 2011 07:37AM) (new)

Ingrid Those are all absolutely great books, Amelia! Except maybe not Heist Society... That might be too girly to teach to a mixed class.
But the rest of them? Wonderful!

message 2360: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) yeah I wasn't sure about that one. It was a TX Bluebonnet this year, so that's the only reason I put it in the category with the others.

Those are some really great choices. I think Heist Society might be iffy, but if you made the boys read it some of them might like it. The other option is to have a selection of a few books with that as one of the choices.

The Book Thief should be closer to the end of the year. Fresh out of year 7 is probably too younger to totally admire Zusak's magnificent prose. Just my opinion.

message 2363: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Yeah, I think so too Jess.

message 2364: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) Lol, I wasn't making an academic calendar or anything, but yeah, you're right.

message 2365: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I think I read The Book Thief in Grade Nine. I think Grade Eight would be just alright, but definitely towards the end of the year.

message 2366: by Ro (new)

Ro | 6 comments I'm currently reading Abandon by Meg Cabot. Has anyone read it?

Be careful or we'll start planning your whole year for you. Lesson plan and everything. ;)

message 2368: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) haha that sounds almost too good to be true :P

message 2370: by Grace (last edited Sep 07, 2011 01:32AM) (new)

Grace Currently reading: 'Anna Karenina' by Leo Tolstoy and 'Emma' by Jane Austen.
Nearly finished the first, so really happy!!! (Not as great as I imagined.)
'Emma' is really good. I do like a bit of romance. XD

Next on the list: 'Before I go to sleep' by S. J. Watson
I do like a thriller now and again. :)

message 2371: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) I'm still reading Heist Society. I absolutely love it so far, but I just have NO time to read this semester :(

Not as great as you---BAH! Karenina is the best thing ever! No, anything Tolstoy is the best thing ever!

message 2373: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) I am trying to read The Help by Kaythrn Sockett but haven't gotten very far because of school andstuff.

message 2374: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid The Help is one of my favorite books. I read it this summer while camping.

message 2375: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) It's pretty good so far, i like her writting style very much.

message 2376: by natalie (last edited Sep 08, 2011 08:53PM) (new)

natalie | 5047 comments Those are good books Amelia. I have yet to read the Book Thief, though I really want to. And my English teacher (Yearbook last year, so we have a pretty good connection) recommended it to me. It's actually pretty funny, we always do that. And "What book are you reading right now? is it good?" I love it. :)

I finshed Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I really, really liked it. Not to keen on the ending, but very good overall.

I loved COE in fourth grade. I just can't get over the fact that I'm actually reading it in the class I'm in. I also read Flowers for Algernon in these past few weeks... Not the whole thing, just the short story version. And we have to do these things called SIFT Notes on the things we read, and I hate them. OH! And in the first few days of school, we read The Tale of Three Brothers to do practice notes, it was totally awesome :)

Oh, and now I am reading The Thief Lord.

message 2377: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) Good to know about the DAUGHTER ending. I've been told that this is the first in a series, so hopefully we'll find stuff out sooner!

message 2378: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) I'm reading, The Help, The Queen's Blade, and The Girl With the Dragon Tatto

message 2379: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I'm reading Purgatorio (yes as in Dante's Divine Comedy), Little Women (surprisingly enough it's REALLY good), and The Aeneid.

Did you finish? And yes, there is going to be another. If there wasn't, it would bother me because it ended cliffhanger-ish.

Yep. I just decided not to read this one. I KNEW there'd be a triangle in it. Everyone I know who's read it hasn't liked it.

Natalie - I started DAUGHTER, but I stopped to read The Near Witch and Heist Society. I had set aside a couple hours tonight to read it, but...I watched my DVD of The Lion King (and cried) instead... I'll get around to it!

That's a good book

message 2389: by Maranda (new)

Maranda Russell I'm reading an American Girl book (Samantha Learns A Lesson) and an autobiography by Joni Eareckson Tada. Also am in the middle of a collection of classic horror short stories for children. Am also thinking maybe I should check out the 39 Clues series, my foster son is really into it.

message 2390: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) The American Girl books are a good series, i read them when i was younger.

message 2395: by Hermione (new)

Hermione (hermione315) oooh, was "The Help" good/enjoyable to read? I've seen the book every time I walk into Barnes & Nobles, but I've never had the urge to start reading it... ;)
