So, I'm currently in the middle of book 1 and thought I'd make a series read of this one since some of you LOVED it. Feel free to talk about any of the books, but put a spoiler with the book # so if someone's not there yet they know not to read that entry.

I'm liking it so far, but I figured out who the bad guy was the minute they came into the book. At least, I think I did. I'll let you know 50 more pages.
It definitely started slow, but it does pick up and has some action to it.

***Spoiler***(Magic Bites, p.200)
I'm at the part where they're all getting ready to go fight the bad guy after she's received a gift in her backyard.
I know you're all obsessed with Curran, but right now I'm kind of digging Mahon (the bear). Not as a possibility for Kate, but just as a cool character. I'm sure I'll fall for Curran after the next book...
I also have some guesses as to what secret Kate seems to be keeping, but I'm assuming that will be revealed sometime soon. Maybe?

After reading:
I liked book 1. I'll have to wait on the others from the library.

***Spoiler***(Magic Bites)

I liked the end with the boys on her roof. I was also right about who did it. She does a good job of misleading you, and she almost got me, but when the guy kept following her I knew the doc was too obvious. I'm curious as to why he didn't use the doc as bait, but perhaps it's because he didn't have any power to steal so it wouldn't have benefited him in the best way.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I love this series, the first book is a little slow as the world is very different and there is some fairly heavy world building that bogs down the book, but not the others.

message 4: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Yes, the second book is much better than the first, and the third is even better! I am dying for Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews .

You know, Curran's parts get bigger in each book, so we don't get to know him that much in the first. I think it's not only Curran that I love, but the snarky banter and chemistry between him and Kate. By the third book I had it bad for him, lol.

message 5: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments If you go to Andrews website she has the first couple of chapters up for Magic Bleeds. I read them this week and it is good, makes me really impatient for the book.

message 6: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I know, I don't read any of the excerpts though. I just want to wait until I have the book!

I'm almost done with Magic Bleeds.
I love the little tussle her and Curran get into. It had me smiling. I had to stop reading and start working right as the big fight scene was starting. Talk about bad timing. I've been going crazy wanting to get back to it.

message 8: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I hate it when I am reading and an at a fun/action packed scene and then have to stop reading for whatever reason, but work is an especially bad one.

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
The kids try to sneak ear buds in while teachers are lecturing. I wonder if a teacher ever tried to do the same for a book on tape. =) I can multitask pretty well...
I'd feel horrible. I could never do it. I feel the need to constantly be around the room. I have to force myself to sit while they're reading or else I make them uncomfortable.

message 10: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments That is funny Heather, you could give them a complex with all the flitting around. LOL

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
I could give them a complex doing anything. =)

So, I just finished all the books so far.

***Spoiler***(Magic Strikes)
I've got to say that I loved the description of how a tiger stalks its prey and then Curran being right behind her.
The dingo ate the baby joke - great.
I just about died when Roland? described how his father glued everything to the ceiling - cat included. I could just picture it.
I have to say, I'm surprised Derrick lived after interrupting the hot tub. I'm also amazed that Kate would be dumb enough to issue a challenge like that to Curran. Once again, she ends her story perfectly with a great moment between the two of them that forces you to want to read more.

message 12: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I'm going to reread the first book. It's been a while since I read it.

*** Spoilers Maybe ****

Words of power is a new concept for me. A friend at work, who is a long time fantasy/SF buff, told me that the concept has be around for a long time. I'm glad that Kate is collecting these powerful words. At least she will use the words repsponsibly and Kate needs all the protection she can get.

I'm about 100 pages into Magic Bleeds and I've got to say that I'm so glad to be back with Kate. I fought reading this series for a long time and I'm glad I finally caved. I'm loving it.

Also, the prologue...Seriously!!! I was not happy that the author found a way to flake on that. I wanted that scene. Although, I may still get it. Who knows?

I found that I was laughing so much while reading this one. I could have easily pulled out tons of quotes and quick one liners too.

Hehe. I'm noticing that.

***Spoiler*** (magic Bleeds)

Loved it:

"'Is that a lion with horns and a pitchfork?'
'Yep.'
'Is he carrying the moon on his pitchfork?'
'Nope it's a pie.'"

I love the ending. I miss the banter already. I was tempted to trade the book in since I don't have the rest of the series, but that's not happening now. I'm keeping it.

I want to listen to the audio now after reading the book. I listened to the first 3 before and the narrator did a great job.

message 19: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I ordered both the audio and book of Magic Bleeds. I hope they arrive soon. I will probably read first then listen.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Paula wrote: "I ordered both the audio and book of Magic Bleeds. I hope they arrive soon. I will probably read first then listen."

I find it is easier to read then listen. If I do it the other way sometimes I get lost. Listening forces me to "read" slowly. lol

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
I go crazy with the reader's pause for dramatic effect. I get antsy. Although, I did okay trying to run while listening once. It kept me more entertained then music seeing how I've heard the same songs 600 times.

"Kate Daniels, professional fuck-up."

Hehe. Magic Strikes - Curran's POV

message 23: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I hadn't seen that one yet Heather. It was very interesting. :)

message 24: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I ordered and received the audio Magic Bleeds. CD one is blank! Not a word on it. CD two starts at chapter 19. I am not pleased! Not at all.

That is just pure evil!! I am sure that if you send it back you will get a new one, but still.... you are ready to read this one now, so very frustrating!!!

message 26: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Yes, I am thinking of all the awful things I could say to amazon.com, but more than likely I'll just send the audiobook back and hopefully get a good copy. Fortunately I read the book already, but still...

message 27: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
The sad thing is, Amazon wouldn't know it was blank. I remember when Dark Knight came out. The distributor sent out a bunch of blank blue ray disks. They all had to be recalled right before the release date and they had to quickly produce more.

Poor Paula. You've got to be going crazy.

message 28: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I'm already crazy, but that's another story! I'm going to take a deep breathe and relax.

message 29: by Angela (new)

Angela B Paula, I'm glad to know I'm not the only crazy one

message 30: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Amazon.com has already sent out the replacement audiobook for Magic Bleeds. Yay, instant happiness! I'll mail the evil one back to them tomarrow.

message 31: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments At least the customer service is great!!

message 32: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Oh, that's good Paula. I would freak! I like downloading audiobooks, at least they get to me in mins. Amazon does it through audible.com and they sometimes have better prices.

I haven't read all though this since I didn't know if there are spoilers for Magic Bleeds. I am almost halfway through, yay!

SPOILER:

Kate and Curran are pissing me off!!!! They need to stop being so stubborn and just talk already! I'm sure it's going to happen soon though, I am dying to see what happens when they finally do.

END SPOILER

message 33: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Oh, Carrie, that was a great part. It does get better....

message 34: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Tehehehe, I'm sure it does. I know Ilona said that they are either going to get together or call it quits in this book, so I know what's going to happen. :P It's frustrating getting to that point though. Kate and Curran's banter is not quite as witty as it usually is. I think it's because they both feel hurt at this point.

I agree! This is a series that gets better as it goes along. The character development was stronger in books 2+. We saw so many more sides to Kate--her honor, loyalty, humor, etc. This series has become one of my favorite UFs!

Has anyone else read the short story in Must Love Hellhounds? That is a nice little romance about Kate's friend Andrea. It comes between Magic Strikes & Magic Bleeds.

message 40: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Shannon, that was a good story in that book. But then when I read Magic Strikes I was mad at the end because of those 2.

It was a good, fun short story.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments So I did read book 1 of this series and felt underwhelmed, but since everyone says this series is really good, I will keep going with it. I complain enough about weak first book syndrome, that it makes me want to give this one a chance if people have that much faith in it.

Oh definitely! Waiting for Magic Bleeds was painful, but way worth the wait! Once you read all four, you will want to go back and read them again. It will be better the second time around!

message 44: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I think it is the world that the authors create. It is so involved that it does slow you down in the first book. But this series one that gets better each time you read it. If you can get the audio versions listen to those, they are great!

Curran's POV

It's a collection of scenes from Curran's POV.

Carrie! Why can't I get the kindle version to work for me? Wimper!

message 46: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Oh, awesome! I think I have probably read some of them on her site. <3 Curran.

You can't get it to show up? Or it won't load? It should work since it is not drm protected. See, this is exactly why I didn't get a kindle even though I loved the new K3.

message 47: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments So, do you have a program to sort and add your books with? I use calibre. When I download it I choose to open it with calibre and then I add it to my nook from there.

Did you try both the pdf and mobi files? Just in case, I would try them both. Maybe I can convert it and see if that works any better. It shouldn't matter though, but maybe the mobi file is corrupted.

message 48: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
I just don't have anything that would open the file to allow me to email it to myself. I might be missing some steps since I'm unclear on how that all works. I'll try what you sent me and find out.

You can actually get it directly from amazon for the kindle...but they charge 99 for it....

message 50: by Heather (new)

I know. I wonder if it'd still be 99 cents in data charges.
