Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Started Magic Rises. Fun start, super dramatic and scary.

Been wondering if the series would have a Europe trip at some point. Really excited to see other "Packs".

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Reading Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels, #8) by Ilona Andrews , almost halfway through.

At this point it's my favorite Kate Daniels book yet.

It was a good one, some great funny parts.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments I've been high lighting a lot of parts! Great lines.

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments I lost the book I was reading I'm about 4 book behind now I think. Grrrrr.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments That sucks!! I hate it when that happens. Thank goodness for GR or it would still be happening!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments I think the true charm was that Kate got to spend quite a bit of page time with Curran and Julie.

I also adore the setup her for the next books. It's intense and awesome! But I called it on (view spoiler)

message 308: by Tya (new)

Tya | 846 comments There's a lot of Julie in the new one? That puts a damper on my hankering to read it. I'm still going to--of course--just as soon as I can get my grubby hands on a copy. But, I really, really dislike that girl.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments I think she's pretty good here. There's more Curran and Kate then Julie. If that makes you feel better.

message 310: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments Lol. I feel like it could be possible for Julies growth to be stunted as a character so I can see how she could be annoying I usually just ignore her for the most part but if there is a lot of her in the book that might be hard to do. Oh yeah, I found my book so now I can finish reading it I was at the half way point I found that it was slower than the past books as we still haven't really gotten into the swing of things at the half way point. I tend to get the names confused but I think I'm reading Magic Slays was this slow for anyone else?

Nope. In fact, that installment was what finally completely hooked me in on Curran and Kate as an item. It was a different pace, but it worked for me.

I am not a romance reader so I find that part of the book pretty slow I'm like give me the actiiiiooon.

As a writer I think this is a flaw of mine because For a character to seem 3d they need to have some love in their lives I've written things and then been like oh yeah they need friends and stuff. lol.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Character interactions is a big part of character growth. A story can be so cliché and connect the dots average in plot, but if the characters are well realized I'm there. That's what makes it for me. I don't care how action packed the story is if I can't connect with the character. (But I do love my action!!)

You'll love Magic Shifts then. I think it's the most action packed one yet!

On the romance part I can live with or with out it. As long as the lead is interacting and is connected to people. Has other ties of love.

Curran and Kate as a couple is the main thing of this series though. I always felt it balanced out well. However, I would never call this PNR. It's definitely Urban Fantasy.

I always felt that the love life was secondary to Kates journey in the books. Of course going from someone who doesn't trust anyone and is all alone to someone with a family is a part of her growth as well but I'm also interested in the over arching plot of where she comes from and her real family etc. That's really interesting to me.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Well I'm good with both of those aspects developing! I am curious to find out about her blood relations as well.

message 316: by Tya (new)

Tya | 846 comments I've finally gotten a copy of the book and I'm really liking it. I actually even like Julie --for the most part. I feel like they really, reallyreally dialed her annoying, bratty, entitled crap back which is good because I never thought that fit with the background that they gave her. She still had moments were I wanted to skip over her but she's supposed to be a teenager--it was acceptable. For the most part I thought if this was the character that they introduced met o from the beginning I would never have disliked her. Also, I'm not finished yet but it could be that they haven't shoehorned any anvils about the eventual Julie/Derek pairing or the Julie/Derek/Asciano love triangle. Or, it could be her being less annoying was a deliberate choice because Kate mentions that Julie is adopting some of Kates own traits since Kate gave Julie her blood that time.

Ok, here's a thing. I'm a shipper. I love that Kates journey is more than love and romance but I am a sucker for romance. So, I think that I may just a teeny tiny bit ship Julie with Asciano. As much as I ship her with anyone because she's 15 and while she's tolerable in this book she's still not great.

(view spoiler) But, that could just be me. It probably is.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Yeah. I'm very curious where the series is going to go with Roland.

message 320: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments Roland is still there in the newer books? hm, might get tired of that.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Chakara wrote: "Roland is still there in the newer books? hm, might get tired of that."

Well he is the big bad the series has always been leading up to. Besides they're taking it in a very interesting way right now.

Yes, I seem to have been mislead ( mostly by myself) I thought that the newer books had their own over arching plot but it seems that the bad guy is still the bad guy even in the newer books. I'll give it a try I'e always loved this series though I've had a hard time focusing on any book lately.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Book burn out?

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments Shera (Book Whispers) wrote: "Book burn out?"

Too busy but lately I finally decided to go back to audible and I am also doing overdrive so I am trying to listen to audiobooks while coloring to relax each day. So far its working and I was able to finish a book I'd owned forever that way. They don't have these audios so the book I'm on is not moving forward.

I love audio books! It lets me read when I'm doing things around the house. I save my audible credits for books I know I'll re-read, then use my library and overdrive for ones I want to check out.

Yes I have the next book i need to read in this series from audible but I really don't care for the actors voice. its not even close to how she sounds in my head so I prob will end up doing an exchange on it. Thats the good thing about audible if you chat with customer service they will let you do a swap even on an older title that you purchased.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments You are probably the the first person that I've heard of that doesn't like their narrator. She is one of my favorites, I only read the series that way.

Tya | 846 comments Do any of y'all know if there are going to be any more Currans POV novellas? I've looked on their website and I haven't seen any since the first volume and there have been tons of scenes that I would love to see from his POV.

I haven't heard any thing lately on them. And I know they've been swamped and their righting schedule/releases have been messed up.

message 330: by Tya (new)

Tya | 846 comments Boooooo. I love those POVs I can't say how many times I've gone back and re-read. I really like this series. I'm thinking of getting my audible account up and running and listening to them since the majority seem to like the narrator.

Yes, it certainly wasn't bad just not what I wanted from the series at the time but I do see why it had to be done that way. Hopefully the next one will give me what I was looking for.

message 335: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments moved on to Magic Rises trying the audio. I really don't like the way she pronounces names of things and people its not how I'd pronounce them so its a tad annoying to try to figure out what she's talking about so I can imagine it. Maybe its to late in the series to start doing audios.

message 336: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments Also I hate when the main character is supposed to be in her mid to late 20's and sounds like she's old and has snuff in her mouth.

message 337: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 1272 comments I wonder if they will extend the world as they've said before " Kate pays the bills." The whole world had been effected by this magic wave so it might be nice to follow a different group of paranormals for a book or two.

I wasn't a huge fan of Magic Rises

I have it but its not a whole different group of paranormals . I don't have too much interest in Gunmetal Magic though.

i mean like a different pack , different The People etc. in a place like London or New York etc.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments I really want some Kate Daniels spin-offs.

However, I'm super interested in having a European take. I loved the glimpse of it from before.

I'd like that too. It seems that in the later books ( at least so far) that they are spreading the world out so its certainly possible. If we keep buying them they'll probably keep writing them as long as its fun for them to write.

Hopefully i'll be caught up soon.

It was a very stupid trope to use.

It's not as bad as the Cat and Bones books. But certainly not the best one so far. I can tell they are trying to expand the world by giving more detail on the mythology and mythological characters there was some back info that I felt should have been in like book one or two though.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments I think it will get lost. It's happened with quite a few of my favorite Urban Fantasy series.

Though it will be interesting if they set their sites on movie or TV show.

They've grown the world so much I think even a trilogy of movies wouldn't be enough. I'd go TV route but it will be so long before we even know. they need to pitch the concept , they need to work on scripts etc.

That makes me happy, but I really wonder if anything will happen. I do think that tv would be better than movies. So much is left out with movies, while tv could be a season a book. But even if they do that I'm sure it will be super different, they always are.
