I completed Task 30.5 (6-degrees of seperation) by reading Set This House in Order: A Romance of Souls and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.These two books are connected as follows:
Set This House In Order is written by Matt Ruff. Another of Matt's books, Bad Monkeys, has been optioned for film by Matt Battaglia’s company, Blink International.
Matt Battaglia played Lisa Kudrow’s fireman boyfriend on “Friends”.
Kudrow's co-star on "Friends" was Jennifer Aniston, who was married to Brad Pitt.
Pitt co-founded a film production company called Plan B Entertainment, which produced the movie Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, with the approval from the Dahl family.
Set This House In Order is a warm story of 2 Multiple Personality individuals coming to terms with their "souls" and their individual pasts and learning to trust Life and people in the process.
The story is delightful, humerous, sad, heartwarming and positive to read as the Souls try to make order in their lives. The characters are interesting and the story is easy to follow (despite the numerous personality switches).
Charley & The Chocolate Factory is a delightful tale, full of magic, wonder and Oompa Loompas. It's fun and quirky and full of imagination. I would have loved it as a kid.
Having now read the book, I'm not sure why the Dahl family was disappointed with the original movie (Gene Wilder's version). Although the Wilder character was a bit wackier than the book's, it was more similar than the Johnny Depp darker version of Willie Wonka.

Courage: The Red Badge of Courage & "The Veteran" by Stephen Crane (Paperback, 336 pages) A classic novel that I only now got around to reading for the first time. This edition includes a short story about a veteran of the American Civil War. Also included: an introduction by Shelby Foote and short essays by Ernest Hemingway, H. G. Wells, Theodore Dreiser, and Joseph Conrad.

20.7-- Time to DeclutterWe moved last month from a 3 bdrm apt to a 3 bdrm town house. My husband has been on my case to throw out some of the makeup I never wear, so I finally did. Some of the makeup I threw out were things I'd had for 5+ years.
For this task, I read Bulletproof Mascara: A Novel, which is about a girl who for the Carrie Mae Foundation (think Mary Kay), a front for a secret spy agency. I threw out makeup, and the main character works for a makeup company.

Telephone Ringing in the Labyrinth: Poem: 2004-2006 is a little strange, very powerful. I'm still mulling this over in my mind. I like "Fallen Figure" and a few others. "Rhyme" did have a bluesy, folksy cadence, but it didn't sit well with me. Left me with a vague feeling of indigestion. :S Maybe a feeling of disappointment that came through in the poem? Anyway, here is my haiku:

The sin of pride relates to the story in the novel because it is the flaw that everyone who meets Mr. Darcy in Hertfordshire, including Elizabeth Bennet, believes him to have. In general, pride is a sin because it can cause people to think less of others. In the story, it nearly stops the central romance! Can you think of anything more deadly to the story? :D

Very good book about a woman who wants to commit suicide before her terminal illness becomes too painful. Family issues and each family member's feelings are explored. Done well without becoming maudlin.

This was an excellent book portraying the sequence of multiple incarnations and how the soul grows with each repeating life. Really enjoyed this book. A good way to learn about this topic without too much theology or controversy.

First Updike novel I have read and I have heard people love him or are indifferent - I must say I fall into the indifferent category. Finished: 20.1 April Fool Must Love Dogs by Claire Cook. This was a light romance filled with quirky family members about a 40ish divorced woman getting back in the dating swing by using the classified ads. It's not rolling-on-the-floor funny, but it is pretty amusing. 3*
20.3 Mental Health: Kissing Doorknobs by Terry Spencer Hesser YA novel about OCD and how it can take over a person's life. I had never thought about how all invasive the compulsions can be and the amount of work it takes to learn to handle (and I do not mean cure) them. I think a lot of us are a little compulsive about some area of our lives, but we manage to keep it under control.

Lennie doesn't have a specific mental health disorder save the fact that he isn't terribly smart. I felt such sadness at the end of the book when he was killed because of his mental health disorder. I learnt how some people have trouble understanding and obeying the unsaid rules of this world and how this can lead to tragedy.

I read Things Fall Apart.
I do think this book belongs on the list as it gives a different cultural perspective – it’s good to read books from all sorts of perspectives. But there’s also a universality – the essentially workaholic father, who’s stubborn and distant and sometimes abusive to his family – the character exists in all cultures. I also appreciated the fact that the main character was not a particularly laudable person, since the tragedy of the situation did not depend upon the individuals affected but on the impact on the culture as a whole.
I agree with the number one listing for To Kill a Mockingbird – it had a big impact on me when I read it as a teenager, and I found it even more compelling when I re-read it a couple years ago.

I finished Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs for task 20.6. It's the 4th in a series which I've really been enjoying. And evidently the fifth comes out on Tuesday, which I just learned. I added myself to the library waiting list and there are already 35 people ahead of me. :)The series is from the urban fantasy genre and the main character is a 30-something female auto mechanic who is a walker, which means she can turn into a coyote. If you're into that kind of thing (and I am), this is one of the better ones out there from both a stylistic approach and for originality. There's a lot of action and some romance although "bedroom acts" are implied, rather than explicitly spelled out. I'm not opposed to kink every now and then but I respect this author's ability to carry a solid story without having to fall back on sex to keep her readers' interest.

I discovered GR author Steve Hamilton when I needed a book for the Summer Challenge's Christmas in July task. I really enjoyed the Alex McNight series and thought the stand alone Night Work was an interesting departure. The Lock Artist is a stand alone with a fresh voice (or lack thereof- the protagonist is mute)-a real page turner. Hamilton can't write fast enough for me.

In researching Ender's Game I saw Space Cadet referenced often as one of OSC's influences. This book follows young cadets and their mission to Venus. I was amazed by Heinlein's foresight- in 1948 he had cellphones in the cadet's pockets and microwave meals.

Read a book with one of The Seven Deadly Sins in the title: wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony. When you post this task you also need to state if/how your book related to the sin that was in the title and why you think that particular sin is so deadly.

The book did relate to the sin in the title in that Nikolai envies Andrei throughout the novella. Andrei embodies everything Nikolai does not believe in, but Andrei is also everything that Nikolai is not, which, to some degree, eats away at Nikolai and he is consumed by this envy. When one focuses all one's energy on this sort of emotion, one can not move forward.

Completed 30.5-- Six Degrees of SeparationFor the first book, I read: The Princess and the Hound by Mette Ivie Harrison.
For the second book, I read: Austenland by Shannon Hale.
These two authors have a few things in common. They are both Utah authors (which is where I live). In the acknowledgments at the end of "Austenland", Shannon Hales gives a very gracious thank-you for Mette's help with editing. And then in April of last year, one of our local B&N's had an educators' night/author panel/author palooza in which Mette and Shannon were both guests for. That was an exciting night! I got my copy of "The Princess and the Hound" signed by Mette, and my copy of "Princess Academy" signed by Shannon. They were both amazing women.
